  The death of Henry Kersten at his home on Lincoln Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 26th, marks the passing of another of the pioneers of Calumet County. Mr. Kersten had always enjoyed fairly good health until some five months ago when he complained to his family that he was not feeling well and the family physician was called. An examination showed that he was suffering from a liver complaint and a weak heart. He was able to be up and around, however, and but few of his friends knew of his serious condition until some five weeks ago when he was obliged to remain in bed. Since that time he gradually grew weaker until death came. The deceased was born in Frasselt, Prussia, Germany, Aug. 23, 1850 and at the time of his death was sixty-two years, two months and three days. In the fall of 1855 he came to America with his parents who settled in the town of Woodville. At an early age he assisted his father in clearing the heavy timber from the land and experienced all the hardships of the youth of pioneer days. In 1864 he moved to the town of Brillion, where he remained until 1875 when he came to Chilton and engaged in the banking business with his brother, Theo. Kersten. Sept. 30, 1879 he was married to Antoinette Craanen of Bay Settlement, Brown County and was an ideal husband a a good and kind father to the four children that were born to them. In public life Mr. Kersten was always energetic, taking an active interest for years in municipal affairs. He was a member of the Hook and Ladder company for years, both as private and foreman, and for some years was chief of the department, taking great pride in making it an efficient body. Mr. Kersten was an excellent neighbor and never failed to do all in his power for any of his friends who were in trouble. He was one of the prime movers in building St. Mary's Catholic Church in this city and had been a constant attendant since. He was a member of the St. Joseph's society and Catholic Knight of Wisconsin. He is survived by a widow, two sons, Gerard C. of Colby and Herbert of this city, and two daughters, Mrs. Wm Schabach and Miss Marie of this city. He is also survived by three brothers, Theo. Of Crivitz, Peter of Brillion town, and Math of Rudolph.
