This is the old cemetery location one mile north of Johnsburg. The site is on the south side of Calmar Road, 1/4 mile east of County W. There are no markers in this cemetery, it is a farm field. There are an estimated 100 to 150 graves still here. There are varying accounts of how many graves were moved to present St John the Baptist cemetery. The # on each memorial in the notes section is the number entry made by the Priest in the Church burial records.
This site was the location of one of the earliest churches in southeastern Wisconsin. German settlers arrived here in 1841. The church was erected in 1843 and it was called St Johannes. A school and parsonage were also located on the 6 acre property. The decision in the early 1850's to construct a new church to the south resulted in a division in the community and some residents left for Iowa, Minnesota and other areas in Wisconsin. The new church was completed and dedicated by Bishop Henni in 1857. We are not sure when the new cemetery was started.
The Malone Area Heritage Museum has recently placed a historical marker at this site.
