    Obituary:
Marie Elizabeth Rettler (nee Buchberger), 77, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Cherry Meadows, Appleton, in the presence of her family following a seven year hard-fought battle with the rare heptocellular-cholangiocarcinoma form of liver cancer.

She was born on April 24, 1933, in Appleton, the daughter of Clarence and Minnie (Artz) Buchberger. Marie graduated from Appleton High School (West) in 1951 and joined the Legal Department of Home Mutual Insurance Company (now Secura) until the time of her marriage. On May 29, 1954, Marie was united in marriage to Fred H. Rettler at St. Therese Catholic Church. Fred and Marie later became part of the founding membership of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
While raising her three sons at home, Marie served as transcriber for Robert F. Nelson, Court Reporter. She later returned to a full-time career working for Ad-Vantage, Inc., an advertising specialty agency, eventually becoming Vice-President in charge of the real estate division. She particularly enjoyed this career which involved much customer contact and travel throughout the U.S., working along with her husband and sister at national and regional conventions.
Marie is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Fred; her three sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Sherry Rettler, Mequon, Wis.; David and Cynthia Smith Rettler, Rochester, Minn.; and Thomas and Courtnay Rettler, Appleton; five grandchildren, Bradley (special friend, Lindsay) Rettler, University of Notre Dame; Erin Rettler, Sheboygan; Hannah Rettler, University of Arizona; Spencer Rettler, University of Minnesota; and Sarah Rettler, Appleton; her beloved sister and best friend, Dolores Buchberger, Appleton; her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Yvonne Buchberger, Darboy; brother-in-law, Dick (Marge) Rettler, Appleton; and sister-in-law, Jean (Nick) Knauf, Neenah. She is also survived by many special nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, James; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Laura Rettler.
The funeral Mass for Marie will be celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 11:30 a.m at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Appleton, with Pastor Thomas Farrell officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A private burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park.
Marie and her family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Robert Fox, Appleton, Dr. Charles Erlichman and Dr. David Nagorny of the Mayo Clinic, whose outstanding skills and special care gave Marie seven years of quality life following her initial cancer diagnosis, and also Dr. William Guenther, Jennifer, Nancy and Jill, for all the exceptional care and many acts of kindness she received at the Martha Siekman Cancer Center in Appleton, during her final months.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be designated for cancer research at the Mayo Clinic in memory of Marie Elizabeth Rettler. Memorials can be made online or mailed to Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, Minnesota, 55905.
