Fischer, Wilbert Joseph - Wilbert "Bill" Fischer was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, January 22, 1926. Sadly, Bill passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Vancouver, Washington, February 15, 2009. Bill spent most of his youth growing up in Greenville, Wisconsin in the home of his grandfather John Hilger. Bill graduated Appleton High School in 1942 and promptly enlisted in the US Navy. He helped win World War II fighting in the Pacific campaign. After the war he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he lived with his uncle, Joe Hilger. Bill continued his education and graduated from the University of Portland. Although Bill had a degree in business, he preferred the outdoors and working with his hands. He was a man of many talents including carpentry and bricklaying. He also spent many years working in the Portland shipyards building ocean-going vessels. Bill loved Portland, but he also made frequent trips back to Wisconsin to visit his friends and relatives.
Bill was the son of Alois C. Fischer, Sr. and Clara Hilger Fischer of Appleton. He was predeceased in death by his twin brother Walter and his other brothers: Alois, Gilbert and Alvin. Bill will be dearly missed by his four surviving nephews: Wayne, Richard, John and Mark Fischer, who all reside in the surrounding Appleton area. Bill was laid to his final rest at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
