Biography:
Walter went into the Marines at age 17 in 1919. He was discharged around 1920 after his father died so he could take care of the family.
In 1922, he joined the 127th Regiment of the Infantry, Company H, 2nd Battalion WNG, in Menasha, WI. In 1924, he was a Mounted Drill Platoon Troop C 105th Calvary, WI National Guard, at Camp Douglas, WI.
In 1936, he went to Oregon for the CCC for about a year.
In April 1941, he began his trek to cross the country to go to Hawaii and then on to the Philippines. He was a Lieutenant and was the first enlisted man in Milwaukee to be called into active duty. He was promoted to Caption en route. He went to train Philippine scouts.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, the Japanese invaded the Philippines. When the Philippines fell and prisoners were taken, Walter was on the Bataan Death March. He was listed as missing in action for a period of months. From 1942 to 1944, he was a Japanese prisoner of war. He died December 15, 1944, on board a ship that was transferring prisoners to Japan as forces were heading back to reclaim them.He was awarded the Purple Heart.
