    Obituary:
    Richard M. Mattern, Menasha, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2009, in Mequon, WI, while attending a family wedding. He was born on June 5, 1924, in Menasha, son of the late Anton and Martha (Jankowski) Mattern. Richard graduated from Menasha High School in 1942 and had attended Lawrence University. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Richard was a faithful employee of American Can at the Menasha and Des Moines, IA, plants. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and sang in the choir. Richard was a lifelong musician, golfer and a member of an Opera Guild.
    Richard is survived by two daughters: Pamela (Michael) Harris, Susan (Randy) Kinsling and their mother Phyllis; his grandchildren, Marlon (Letitia) Harris, Caleb Harris, Challis Mattern, Todd (Ashley) Kinsling, Paige Kinsling; two great-grandchildren: Stephen and Devante. He is further survived by his brothers and sisters: Eugene (Lois) Mattern, Gerald (Anne) Mattern, Tony (Dolores) Mattern, Mary (Arthur) Jones, Fr. Joe Mattern, Kathryn Franson, James (Joy) Mattern, Jane (Dr. James) Spensley, Roseann Mattern, Martin Mattern; brother-in-law, Boyd Radcliffe, and many relatives and friends.
    He was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth, and sister, Theresa.
    Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at St. John Catholic Church, 516 De Pere Street, Menasha, with Fr. Joe Mattern and Fr. Paul Radetski con-celebrating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place in the St. John Cemetery, Town of Menasha.
    The loving surviving family members are saddened by Richard's death. Being the oldest of 13, he provided direction and leadership and set the stage for his siblings' development in music, athletics, and the intellectual life.
