Obituary:
Died August 21, 2006 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence. Ruth was born February 2, 1913 in Gardner, ND, the daughter of Knute and Haranda (Toftesund) Hande, and had lived in the Kalamazoo area for most of her life. She was employed as a beautician for 15 years in several shops in the Kalamazoo area. Ruth was a member of the Sons of Norway. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin A. Bongers in 1980; and by sisters, Lily Edward, Esther VanErkel, Agate Santek and Mary Carey. Surviving are a son, Robert M. Bongers and wife, Philomena of Holly Hill, FL; and a daughter, Joyce Allworth of Kalamazoo; 4 grandchildren, Tammy (Michael) Ryskamp, Martin (Pamela) Bongers, Kathleen Allworth and Kaye (Brian) Carter; 4 great-grandchildren, Robert M. Bongers II, Nicholas P. Carter, Ryan K. Ryskamp and Taylor R. Carter; 2 brothers, Harold (Dorothy) Hande of Mattawan, and Nels Hande of Kalamazoo; many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday in the Chapel at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Dyke officiating. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Memorial contributions in Ruth's memory may be made to Ministry With Community.
