    Obituary:
Melvin John Steiner, age 83, of Chilton died on Sunday, October 31, 2010, at Appleton Medical Center in Appleton. He was born April 19, 1927, in New Holstein, son of the late Joseph & Pauline (Krebsbach) Steiner. He married Caroline Pingel of New Holstein on June 19, 1951. Following his marriage, Melvin went into dairy & poultry operation and later worked at Stoelting, Inc., for 11 years. He became a part-time agent for Catholic Knights in 1966 and went full time in 1979 until he retired in 1992. Melvin was very active throughout his entire life with many different groups and organizations. Earlier in his life, he joined the adult choir at St. Charles Catholic Church in Charlesburg and continued to offer his strong and unique voice to the Good Shepherd Choir. The residents of the Chilton Care Center and Century Ridge appreciated his song leadership for weekly masses or communion services that were offered there. His involvement at church didn't stop with the choir; he was a Parish Council Member for the former St. Charles Parish, and also, the current Good Shepherd Parish. He volunteered his time on the parish Stewardship & Fund Raising committees. Melvin and his wife began the St. Charles Parish Picnic in 1980 and continues to this day as the Good Shepherd Huhner Fest. In 1949, Melvin joined the Knights of Columbus and was elected Deputy Grand Knight in 1991, and served as Grand Knight from 1993 until 1994. He became the District Deputy from 1994 through 1998 and was appointed Green Bay Diocesan Program Director from 1999 until 2000. Through the Knights of Columbus, Melvin contributed annually to the Seminarian Fund. Melvin knew that the youth of his community was an invaluable resource and volunteered 35 years to leading the New Holstein Hilltop 4-H Club. He also joined the New Holstein Optimist Club and under his presidency, New Holstein received Honor Club Status. He continued to volunteer time and energy for the youth of Chilton by continuing his membership in the Chilton Optimist Club. Melvin also appreciated other people's willingness to volunteer. He was the 'Committee of One' that sent gift cards to local restaurants for individuals and committees that did stewardship in our area. Even with Melvin's tremendous amount of volunteer time, he always found extra time to deal a hand of Sheepshead or share a joke. He even left the joke of the day on his answering machine so people could get a 'pick-me-up' even if he wasn't home.
