    News Mention:
    James Conway narrowly escaped losing his life Saturday when he was struck by one of the cars of the Green Bay Traction line which threw him twelve or fifteen feet. He landed on his right shoulder and hip. Mr. Conway was going home just as the car, which he did not hear, approached Desnoyer St. crossing without blowing their whistle. Conway is badly bruised and shaken up because of the accident.

    Biography:
    JOHN CONWAY. Probably there is not a better known hotel man in the sta te of Wisconsin than Mr. John Conway, who for more than twenty-three yea rs has been proprietor of the Sherman House, the leading hostelry of Apple ton, which is believed to be in every respect the most up-to-date and best -equipped hotel in the state outside of Milwaukee. Its genial proprieto r, John Conway, was born at Appleton, Wisconsin, July 2, 1862, and in 188 8, erected a small building on the present site of the office and lob by of the Sherman House, the building then having twenty-two guests' room s, and about eight persons were its working staff. Business advanced rapid ly, but it was not until 1897 that the first addition was built, another b eing erected in 1899 and a third in 1905, this latter including a modern c afe and lunch room. In 1911, on its twenty-third birthday,'a birthday cele bration was held by Mr. Conway at the Sherman House, and at this time t he Appleton Daily Post, spoke of the event in part as follows: "Twenty-thr ee years of almost unbroken prosperity are very apt to make a decided chan ge in the physical appearance of a city as well as its people. Naturally t hen, it is to be expected that the more influential business institutio ns of the city will have reflected in them the onward march of the time s. So it is with the Sherman House. In the twenty-three years of its exist ence nearly 500,000 persons have partaken of meals in the dining roo m, to say nothing of the thousands who have been served in the cafe and lu nch room and at banquets in the French room. Another noteworthy featu re of the existence of this hostelry is 'the fact that in nearly its quart er of a century only one man has died within its walls. It is believed th at this record is not equalled by another hotel the size of the Sherm an in Wisconsin." The working organization of the hotel now boasts of sixt y-five employes and the pretentious structure has 118 guests' rooms, in sh arp contrast with the little structure of 1888.
    Mr. Conway is one of the best versed men in his line of business in the st ate, his long experience having given him the knowledge of what the travel ing public most desires, and as a result his house is very popular. A thor ough business man, and possessed of much executive ability, he is, neverth eless, an ideal host, genial, courteous a.nd deeply concerned in the welfa re and comfort of his guests.
