    Obituary:
Died - At Chilton, on Sunday evening, Sept. 22d, 1872, Mrs. Mechtilde Esser, wife of Frederick W. Esser, landlord of the Chilton House.
It can be better imagined, than described the gloom of sadness which overshadowed the hearts of our villagers on last Sabbath eve when it was whispered in doleful tones that Mrs. Esser had breathed her last and all her earthly cares were ended. The shock was more than particularly severe owing to the fact that three of her six children were lying in an adjoining room in a precarious condition, liable to surrender to the grim monster at any moment. The facts relative to this distressing case are as follows:
Some time ago the tree children were attacked by typhoid fever and the natural affection and the necessary care they required, to say nothing about looking after the household arrangements of the hotel, so exhausted her system that she fell a prey to the same disease that her poor children were afflicted with. All that medical skill could do was done, but being a fleshy person - weighing about 250 lbs - it was in vain, as the poison was too deeply seated to be removed from the system, and one of our best ladies has been snatched away from an affectionate husband and number of children, in the prime of life and the midst of her usefulness.
The deceased was born in Menseln, Rhine Province, Prussia, on November 30th, 1837. In company with her parents she arrived in the United States in June 1860, and one the 2d day of February 1861 was united to the husband of her choice at Appleton, and six children were the fruition of the happy union. Four years and three days ago Mrs. Esser, became a resident of our village and by her neighborly and friendly manner, as well a noble example in all things, which render life happy, soon won the confidence and esteem of all who knew her, and her unexpected departure cause the tears of affection to flow from every eye.
