    Obituary:
On the evening of January 11, 2016, Leona passed away at her home in Medina, WI as a result of complications from COPD. Leona was 77 years old.
Leona VanderWielen was born Leona Welson in the city of Appleton in Outagamie County, Wisconsin on November 26, 1938. She was the third child of Adeline (Monty) Habeck and Gordon Welson. She was an Appleton-area resident her entire life.
On May 3, 1956 Leona married Edward VanderWielen. They had five children together. They enjoyed countless camping trips and outdoor excursions as a family. Leona worked for many years for the former LaSalle Clinic in Appleton, retiring in 2000.
Leona was an extraordinary lady that lived an ordinary life. Leona loved nature, watching the birds at the feeders in her backyard, and she loved playing cards. She so much looked forward to her weekly "Sunday fun day" card game with her grand kids. It's been often said that she cheated at cards. This accusation was emphatically denied. Leona often exhibited a 'steel' persona that everyone could see through, but we dared not let her know that. Family was everything to Leona. She was a very generous person, and gave much of her own resources for the benefit of others. For years, she was the primary care-giver to her own mother, traveling 20 miles each way for several years, assuring that her mother could stay in her own home.
Leona is survived by her children: Catherine Bundy (Carl), Hortonville WI; Janice Blajeski (Keith), Hortonville WI; Bonnie VanDenzen, Appleton WI; Kurt VanderWielen (Belinda), Neenah WI; by her adopted daughter and friend, Karen VanderWielen, Appleton WI; She is also survived by many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Leona also had many surrogate children and grandchildren, her sister, Carol Moritz, Bothell, WA; her brother, Alvin Habeck (Kelly), Hortonville WI. She will be greatly missed by all the souls she has touched.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, by a son Walter, a grandson, Uriah Denzen, by her parents, Adeline and Harold (Shorty) Habeck, and her sisters, Ruby Welson and Joanne Herman.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Valley Funeral Home with Pastor Jennifer DeNetz officiating. Inurnment will be in Holy Name Cemetery, Kimberly. Leona's family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy a memorial fund is being established in Leona's name.
Leona's family would like to extend a special thank you to the Doctor's and Nursing staff on third floor at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their compassionate care of Leona and her family.

Leona married VanderWielen, Edward Walter 6 May 1956. Edward (son of VanderWielen, John J. and Klein, Cresentia) was born 3 Jul 1932; died 1 Dec 1980; was buried , Holy Name Catholic Cemetery, Kimberly, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]
