Obituary:
John Dee Schmerein, 89, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2007, with his family at his side. John was born March 18, 1918, in Neenah, the son of John David and Lydia (Schneller) Schmerein. John had a successful tennis career at Neenah High School and Lawrence University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. After graduating from Lawrence University, Appleton, he was united in marriage on August 14, 1941, to Margaret June Gilbert. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the South Pacific. He enjoyed 25 years working at Gilbert Paper Co., Menasha, retiring as president. John served on the Board of Directors of First National Bank, Menasha, Twin Cities Saving and Loan (Anchor Bank) and Theda Clark Memorial Hospital. Followed by many years of retirement on the golf course, including four holes-in-one.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret; a son, John Gilbert (Susan) Schmerein, Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Mame (David) Heaney, Neenah; and three grandchildren, John Charles Schmerein, New York; Kristina (Michael) Kinzley, Dallas, Texas; and Patrick J. Heaney, Madison.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 320 Nicolet Blvd., Menasha, with Fr. Paul Radetski officiating. Interment will be held in St. Margaret's Cemetery, Neenah. In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the Valley VNA, Neenah and St. Patrick's Parish.
