    Biography:
    GALPIN, Alfred was born in Weymouth, England on June 20, 1813 and was married to Mary Scott of Bath in 1840. He came to Wisconsin in August of 1848 and lived on a farm in Eagle, Waukesha Co. until August of 1826, when he came to Appleton. Nine children were born to them; Aldred, 1841, Mary Scott, 1843, Ethelwulf and Harold 1848, Ann Charlotte, 1850, Cromwell, 1851, Algernon, 1854, and W.G. August, 1856. They are still Living: Alfred, Harold, Ann, Cromwell and Algernon. Taken from The Outagamie County Pioneer Record.

Walter Russell took over and Alfred Galpin became a partner in 1864.Mr. Galpin took over in 1866, trained his sons to the trade, and handed it over to them in 1877. present members are A.S. Galpin and H. Galpin.
    A.S. Galpin is a native of Waukesha Co,Wisconsin, and was bred to the hardware business.

    Obituary:
    Mary Galpin Porter, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Sunnyvale, CA, on May 4, 2013. She was born on Sept. 13, 1921 and lived in Appleton until moving to California in 1960. She was a member of the Appleton Senior High School class of 1939, the first class to graduate from the new school. As the tallest girl in her class, she was chosen to portray the Statue of Liberty at the dedication ceremony for the new high school. She also was in the class of '43 at Lawrence University, a member of All-Saints Episcopal Church, and a member of the Infant Welfare Circle of the King's Daughters. Her great-grandfather, Norman Richmond, in 1853 co-founded the first paper mill in Appleton, the Richmond Paper Mill. Her great-uncle, banker Alfred Galpin, had the first telephone in Appleton, in 1877. Her father and grandfather owned the Galpin hardware store on College Avenue.
    Mary enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She celebrated her 90th birthday aboard a cruise ship in Alaska. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Porter, formerly of Kimberly; parents, Gerald & Anne Galpin; sister, Audrey Galpin Vilaro; and nephew, David Porter. Mary is survived by a son, Jon Porter; sister-in-law, Barbara Porter of Kaukauna; niece, Susan Porter Krouscup of Oakland, CA; and nephews William Porter of Madison; Michael Porter of Menasha; and Philip Vilaro of Roxboro, N.C. A graveside service will be held in Appleton's Riverside Cemetery on Wednesday, June 26, at 11 a.m.
