Schmidt, Melvin R.Melvin R. Schmidt, 82, Fremont, died on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. Mel was born on March 12, 1924, in the Town of Wolf River, the son of the late Walter and Frieda (Thiel) Schmidt. He served his country in the US Army during WWII as a medic in France, Germany and Switzerland. On Sept. 14, 1946, Mel married Audrey Leppla at Hope United Church of Christ. She preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 1996. Mel was employed by American Can for 35 years before retiring. Mel was a member of Hope United Church of Christ in Fremont, where he was a former church council member. He was also a member of the Tustin Fire Department, American Legion Post 391 in Fremont, Manawa Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, and the Beja Shrine. Mel was an avid hunter and his life-long hobby was working in his shop on almost any project he was given. He had a tremendous sense of humor and was never without a story or two. Mel is survived by two sons, Dale (Lori) Schmidt, and their son, Andrew, Fremont; David (Darlene) Schmidt, Fremont; and their children, Jodie (Jake) Johnson, Madison; and Jesse (Tina) Schmidt, Neenah; a great-grandson, Cole Johnson; two sisters, Luvern (Leonard) Kleist, Fremont; and Margaret Schrank, Fremont; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Devine, Appleton; and Ardis Schmidt, Poy Sippi; and a brother-in-law, Henry Pahlow, Clintonville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mel was preceded in death by two brothers, Noel and Hallard Schmidt; and sister, Neva (Norman) Schmidt. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Hope United Church of Christ in Fremont. Pastor Alex Tychkin will officiate. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 391 of Fremont. Mel's cremated remains will be interred at Dale Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
