Bud Beckman, age 91, Appleton, passed away peacefully on Sept. 11, 2009, after a lengthy illness. He was born on July 26, 1918, the son of Frank and Grace (Becker) Beckman, in the township of Helevetia, Waupaca Co. He was a graduate of Seymour High School. On June 21, 1940, he married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Zuiches, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour. They shared 69 wonderful years together. Bud worked at the Leathern D. Smith Shipyards in Sturgeon Bay, until he entered the U.S. Navy, where he spent two years in the submarine service. After the war, he moved his family to Hawaii, where he was a salesman for the Scott & Fetzer Co. In 1950, they returned to Appleton. He was employed by Kimberly-Clark and Mid-Tec until his retirement in 1980. Bud was a gentle and kind man, whose first priority was always his family. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, a generous man of great character, who also had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved being out-of-doors: fishing, hiking and camping, with any combination of his wife, Katie, his children and grand-children. Bud, Katie and their children traveled and camped all over the U.S. He was an avid reader and football fan. He grew beautiful roses, enjoyed movies, the theatre, and music, especially Ragtime & Jazz. Bud was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and loyal friend.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine, his children: Sue Schmidt, Appleton, Beth (Douglas) Becker, Treasure Island, FL, and William (Leeni) Beckman, Maple Grove, MN. , his grandchildren, who gave him so much joy: Julie (Rick) Hahn, Menasha, Jenny (Mike) Radtke, Appleton, Mike (Kendra) Schmidt, Menasha, Alyssa (Shaun) Wallace, Jacksonville, FL., Bria (Brad) Robbert, Jacksonville, FL., Anne, Andrew and Jenny Beckman, Maple Grove, MN., his great-grand children: Nathan and Matthew Hahn, Kate, Allie and Joshua Radtke, and Brady and Grant Schmidt. He also leaves sisters-in-law, Marge Beckman and Betty Zuiches, brother-in-law, Jim (Pat) Zuiches, nieces, nephews, and some very dear friends.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers-in-law: Beverly (Walter) Baehler, Olive (George) Wassenberg, Beth (Gus) Feurig, and Helen Beckman, his brother, John Beckman, his grandson, Jeffrey Schmidt, his sisters-in-law: Gladys (Walter) Stern, Bede (Glenn) Kluth, and his brother-in law, William Zuiches.
A Memorial Service will a held on Friday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, corner Drew and Franklin Sts. in Appleton. Family and friends may call at the church one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund is being established. Internment will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Heartland Hospice, especially Tracy, Charlotte, and Sister Ruth, to Grand Horizons III staff and to Dr. N. Carter Noble for the loving care they extended to Bud and his family, during his illness.
