    News Mention:
APPLETON - Kate Blood has been called an ax murderer and a witch.
Regardless of details, the modern-day implications of the Appleton urban legend remain the same for those who dare visit Blood's off-the-path tombstone at Riverside Cemetery.
There have been claims of an apparition. It's been said those who approach during a full moon might witness blood oozing from the face of the family stone on which her name is engraved.
Judi Gault, cemetery administrator, said Blood's final resting place is among the most visited there, having been included in books on haunted locations and wild tales circulated on the Internet.
"There's intrigue," she said. "There's mystique."
The genesis of Blood as an urban legend is a mystery. The annals of history couldn't address claims of supernatural activity at her final resting place, though the record does speak of a woman far removed from the dark tales for which she's become known.
She was the daughter of an influential settler and one of the first children born in the young community in the mid-19th Century.
Frank Anderson, an Appleton musician, artist and author - and a man with zeal for early Appleton history - says Blood is a woman maligned.
"I will always call her the first daughter of Appleton," Anderson said. "The people loved her, and they'd be stunned by what we're doing today."
    'It's fantastical'
Blood's tombstone stands a distance from the remainder of markers for Appleton's earliest residents.
Finding the grave from within the cemetery requires a short walk down a sloped trail that's chained off from vehicle traffic. It's on a Fox River bluff in a wooded area that feels separate from the pristine grounds.
Some approach from a trail head on the riverside portion of Peabody Park.
Chad Lewis, a paranormal researcher and author from Eau Claire, couldn't pinpoint origins of the Kate Blood tales, though they first caught his attention about 20 years ago.
"I love stories that are a little unusual - ghosts, the blood oozing," Lewis said. "It's a little bit different. It stands out. It's fantastical."
A common story says Blood murdered her husband and children with an ax before committing suicide, though a glance at the stone is enough to debunk it. Her husband, George M. Miller, outlived her by 42 years and had married again.
In another version that has been passed from generation to generation, she was murdered by her husband.
Lewis said witchcraft and murder are common themes in urban legends across the country, but in another sense, the tales associated with Blood break from the mold.
"Normally, there's something about the legend that rings true," Lewis said.
    'She lived for others'
The real Kate Blood was affectionately known in life by her nickname, Kitty.
Her father arrived as a Methodist volunteer, became a prominent community member and his family was held in high regard.
Kitty Blood's husband was an editor of the Appleton Post.
Her father, Henry Blood, played a significant role in Appleton's founding and was among four who laid out the plots for the village and for Lawrence Institute. He built the first shanty in Appleton in 1848 and was named Grand Chute's first town chairman.
He was a hands-on man and leader, whether laying out the community's grid or pulling tree stumps from what we know today as College Avenue, Anderson said.
Kitty's passing was a tragic event and word spread quickly. The Appleton Post stopped the presses to include an announcement.
She was just 23 when stricken with tuberculosis, and had traveled south to stay with family in a warmer climate. She soon died in Lawrence, Kansas, and her body was brought back to a grieving community by train.
She left behind a 2-year-old daughter. Her full obituary - printed in the Jan. 7, 1875 edition of the Appleton Post - ran longer than many of the news stories that day.
"She lived for others, and for those she loved, no sacrifice was too great which involved their happiness," it read.
Her influence was such that condolences were offered in the Fond du Lac Reporter. The Post's competitor, The Appleton Crescent, offered sympathies.
"In all of the endearing relations of Wife, Mother, Daughter and Friend, few will be so much missed from society here," it read.
    'Blood' a likely explanation
Lewis and Anderson each suggest her sanguine surname gave rise to the dark tales.
Blood is a common English surname, though one that has been mostly absent from the Fox Valley since the early 20th century, Anderson said.
Riverside isn't the only Wisconsin cemetery that's given rise to rumor based on the presence of a person named Blood.
A legend arose from a small Portage County cemetery and the grave of Civil War veteran Calvin Blood. The stories there suggest Blood hung himself in a cemetery tree, and today blood will flow from it, Lewis said.
Use of Kate Blood's maiden rather than married name on the tombstone contributes to the tales, as does the stone's tucked-away location.
Anderson suggested a more reasonable explanation for the location of the grave. It was among the first at Riverside Cemetery, which was established just four years before Blood's death, and the plot suggests her importance.
It's prime real estate, and in a similar fashion to Sen. Joseph McCarthy's burial place at St. Mary's Cemetery.
"Both have commanding views of the Fox River," Anderson said.

    'Believing is seeing'
Lewis isn't one to declare a place haunted or not, encouraging the curious to determine for themselves.
He's heard from those convinced the Blood grave is a supernatural site.
The more common phrase: "seeing is believing."
Lewis thinks there are circumstances in which "believing is seeing," or that those who arrive with expectations might be more likely to have them fulfilled.
It's human nature to not let facts get in the way of a good story, and urban legends will persist as long as there are teenagers craving a scare.
Anderson said the many versions of the tale represent the need of people to contribute to lore. Society prefers gossip to fact.
"People are creative, and storytelling is at the root of every human," he said. "She was a wonderful girl, who's now Kate Blood, this creature - and everyone would rather go with the witch."
The stories have most certainly made their rounds.
Incidentally, Anderson and Susan Howe in their musical collaboration have dubbed themselves "The Kate Bloods."
Blood's name this Halloween season was found frosted upon tombstone-shaped sugar cookies at a Fox Cities grocery store.
The stories of Kate Blood are pervasive enough that Riverside Cemetery references the grave on its website, with a request for respect and a reminder the cemetery grounds close at sunset.
Its staff abhors the thought of vandalism, but they're happy to have Kate Blood as part of their story.
Gault said the cemetery is a place of mourning and reflection, but also one that speaks to Appleton from its very beginnings. The respectfully curious are always welcome, whether the draw is frightening folklore or a chance to connect with the community's past.
"We know our biggest gem is our history," she said.
