Joe Roemer, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Cherry Meadows. Joe was born in Appleton on May 2, 1925, the son of the late Joseph and Cecilia (Weiss) Roemer. He attended St. Joseph Grade School in Appleton and St. Mary High School in Menasha, where he met Velma "Val" Reimer, his beloved wife of 66 years. They were married in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the Army Air Field Chapel during World War II.
Joe was employed by Wisconsin Telephone Company for 30 years before retiring and enjoying 33 more years of fun. He was a woodcarver, do-it-yourselfer, remodeler, gardener, and enjoyed playing pool with his buddies. He loved to fish at the Lake Winneconne cabin he built with his brother, Casey Roemer. Joe loved music and could play piano, banjo, accordion, and tuba. He also enjoyed Friday night card games surrounded by his family. Joe took the trip of a lifetime last October on the Old Glory Honor Flight with daughter, Jan, traveling as his guardian. He and Val also enjoyed two trips to Germany during retirement to visit relatives.
Joe will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Val; his four children, Mark (Ellen) Roemer, Oshkosh; Chris (Debbie) Roemer, Appleton; Jan (Tom) McHugh, Neenah; Ellen (Tuffer) Kunz, Neenah; and grandsons, Colin McHugh, Madison; and Casey McHugh, LaCrosse.
Joe was preceded in death by sisters Hilda VanBoxtel, Isabelle Kilsdonk, Ann Berghuis, Marie Knabenbauer, Rita Laux, and brother Clarence Roemer.
A Celebration of Joe's Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011, at the Whiting Boathouse, 98 Fifth St., Neenah. A memorial fund benefiting Old Glory Honor Flight will be established.
The family wishes to thank staff at Cherry Meadows and ThedaCare at Home Hospice for their compassionate care.
