Papers of a resident of Kaukauna, Wis., federal Indian interpreter, and local Democratic political figure. A few letters and accounts reflect Grignon's interest in the waning fur-trade business which he acquired from his father Augustin Grignon, but most of the correspondence relates to his work as an Indian interpreter from 1844 to 1855. Included are records of annuity payments and of conferences with the Indians, and references to his trips to Washington on behalf of the Menominees in 1845 and 1850. Among Grignon's correspondents on politics, business, and Indian affairs were Florimond J. Bonduel, Ben C. Eastman, Albert G. Ellis, George W. Ewing, Morgan L. Martin, and Lyman C. Draper. The collection also contains papers of David P. Meade and John F. Meade, father-in-law and brother-in-law of Grignon. These include postal records kept by David P. Meade while postmaster of Kaukauna in 1853-1854; and informative letters on business and politics written in the 1840s by John F. Meade, first from Green Bay as U.S. Land Receiver, then from Madison while a clerk in the Territorial House of Representatives and a state legislator. Numerous business papers relate to land sales, some by Charles A. Grignon, some by Jacob Deuel, surveyor and town promoter in Calumet County. Also included are letters regarding the use of stone from the Grignon quarry for locks on the Fox River, and other improvements.

[Source: Proceedings of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin Vol. 10 (1909) Transcribed by: Heather A. Turner]
1882: Alexander Grignon, a native of Green Bay, was thrown from a wagon and killed, near his residence in the town of Howe, Shawano County, July 4th, at about the age of seventy years. He was an early school teacher at Green Bay, and nearly fifty years ago was engaged, with his brother, Charles A. Grignon, in keeping an Indian trading store at Kaukauna. He afterwards lived for many years at Keshena. He was courteous and genial, and possessed of a fund of anecdote and adventure connected with Indian and frontier life.

His remains were moved here in 1961.
"One of the earliest native sons and Outagamie County pioneer came home to rest today when the century old bones of Augustin Grignon and seven members of his family were re-buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.
"The remains of two others outside the Grignon family also were burried in the common grave and casket. They are believed to be an Indian woman known as born-in-the-Morning and Laurent Fily, secretary and tutor for the Grignon family for many years. Besides Augustin, identification tags indicate the other bones are those of his wife, Nancy McCrea Grignon, the wife of one of his sons, Lawrence, Paul Grignon and wife, his daughter Sophia Grignon Porlier and two of her grandchildren.
"All 10 were originally interred in a family burial ground on the first homestead and fur trading post of Augustin, just west of the present village of Butte des Morts in Winnebago County. The bones were recovered more than 20 years ago and have been kept by Geroge Greenwood, funeral director, for the last 19 years awaiting final burial in Kaukauna where Augustin settled in the early 1800s."

The residence which is now being built by A. D. Grignon on the old homestead in Kaukauna, will be the third which has been constructed by the Grignon family, all of which structures will be yet standing and each built by a different generation. The first of these is a log house and was erected over 80 years ago by Augustine Grignon. Here was born C. A. Grignon, Sr., who in turn erected the present Grignon residence, and where all his children were born. Augustine, the grandson, now builds the third which will outshine in architecture the dwellings of his ancestors, but it can not, in all probabilities be any more substantially constructed.
