Obituary:
Viola E. (Vi) Hoelzel, Kaukauna, age 74, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, July 15, 2007, at St. Paul Manor in Kaukauna. She had courageously battled cancer for five years. Vi was born in rural Calumet County on July 6, 1933, and attended Catholic School there. On February 15, 1958, she married Anthony Hoelzel; Tony preceded her in death in 1999. Vi will be remembered by many as a great baker and cook who shared her gifts with others by working at Country Kitchen in Kaukauna and High Cliff Supper Club in Sherwood. She retired in 2001. Vi was a longtime and faithful member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church where she was active by helping with funeral meals and at the church picnics. She also volunteered her time at St. Vincent de Paul. Vi also had a special fondness for Winnie the Pooh, and enjoyed their "company" around the house. She also enjoyed caring for the many plants and flowers at her home. She very much loved her family, and was proud of the accomplishments of her grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons: Kenneth (Theresa) Hoelzel of Sturgeon Bay and their son Chad; and David (Julie) Hoelzel of Kaukauna and their daughter Katelyn; a sister-in-law: Dolores Hoelzel of Darboy; and a cousin and longtime friend Rosie Schneider of Chilton.
Vi was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Seckel, and by her two special uncles, Henry Seckel and Matthew "Kelly" Seckel, as well as an infant daughter, Mary.
The funeral liturgy for Vi will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH - St. Al's Site at 2401 Main Avenue in Kaukauna with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until the time of the parish prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church on Thursday prior to the service.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to ThedaCare at Home, especially to nurse Kathy, and to Terry who was Vi's social worker. Thanks also to the sisters and entire staff at St. Paul Manor for their loving and compassionate care during Vi's stay. We will never forget the kindness you extended to our Mom. For many years, Dr. Cherkasky cared for Vi. He was always supportive and caring, and we will forever be grateful for his gentle manner.
