Biography:
Peter VANDERHEIDEN, farmer of Holland township, Brown county, was born in North Brabant, Holland, February 10, 1849, a son of Derk and Antonet (VanRoy) Vanderheiden. The father of our subject was a farmer, and was twice married, first to Petrone'la Van de Nymelenberg, who bore him seven children, and died November 9, 1847. The father then married, November 30, 1848, Antonet Van Roy, who has bore him six children, viz. : Peter, our subject; George B. ; Mary, deceased; John and Bardine (twins), and Mary (2). In 1850 the parents came to America, landing in New York, thence coming directly to Wisconsin. They settled in Holland township, where the father bought 160 acres of land in the wild woods, from which was carved out the splendid farm where our subject now lives. It would be superfluous to here relate the primitive manner in which the farm was reached and hewed from the wilderness. The courage and the endurance of the pioneer have been depicted a* housand times, and the experience of the Vanderheiden family was that of all others in like circumstances. Suffice it to say that the family prospered, but that it was for a period of thirty years that they lived in the 20 X 30 log cabin that originally occupied the site of their present substantial stone dwelling. Peter Vanderheiden was faithful in aiding his father in developing the homestead, and was alwa)s a hard worker at home, with the exception of a few months during the winters, when he worked for neighbors; but he always brought his earnings home, adding thus to the family store. The father died here February 1 1, 1874, aged fifty-nine years, eleven months and eleven days, deeply mourned by friends and neighbors. Our subject then took possession of the farm, which he has successfully managed to the present time; each heir became the owner of eighty acres. In 1887 our subject married Miss Louise, daughter of John and Mary (Gilsing) Pekel, the family coming to America from Germany in i860. There were nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Pekel, namely: Lambert, John, William, Mary, George, Kate (deceased in infancy), Louise, Kate (2), and Lena. To our subject and his wife have come four children, viz. : Theodore, born December 7, 1S88; John and Mary, born January 14, 1891; and William, born January 7, 1893. Mr. and Mrs. Vanderheiden are devout members of the Catholic Church; in politics he is a Democrat, and socially he is one of the most respected citizens of the township.

Sherwood- Word was received here of the death Saturday at Green Bay of Peter Vanderheiden. The funeral was held Tuesday. Mr. Vanderheiden is an uncle of West Seidel.

Funeral services for George Vander Heiden, age 74, who died at his home at 210 Divison stree t here last Wednesday morning was held at the Holy Cross church last Saturday morning at 9:30 . A requiem high mass was sai d by the Msgr. P. J. Lochman. Interment was in Holy Cross cemete ry. Pall bearers were Francois Biese, Alois Biese, C. Eimmermann, and Henry Coonen, all nephe ws. Mr. Vander Heiden was born at West Holland May 26, 1852, and lived on a farm in tha t communit y until 1912, when, with his family he moved to Kaukauna, living where the present Kaukauna g reen house is located. Four years ago he moved to the home on Division street, where he died . The deceased was well-known and greatly respec ted in this section of the state and beside s his immediate relatives he leaves a great many friends who morn his loss. Survivors are his widow, four sons, Henry of West De Pere, Theodore of Wrightstown, Peter o f the Town of Kaukauna and George , Kaukauna; five daughters, Mrs. Albert Van Vreede, Town o f Kaukauna, Mrs. Frank Van Lanen and Mrs. William Nackers of Wrightstown, Mrs. R. Faegen, an d Mrs. Charles Wagner of this city; and one brother, Peter of Green Bay.

She was the former Margaret VanderHeiden, the dau ghter of the late Henry and Margaret (Milton) Vanderheiden. She married R oy Turriff, June 18th, 1930. They farmed in the town of Lawrence until 19 66, when they moved to DePere. Mrs. Turriff was a member and past preside nt of the Christian Mothers society and the Lawrence homemakers Club. Millie was born in the Town of Lawrence of March 4, 1917, daughter of t he late Henry and Margaret (Milton) Vander Heiden. CHILD KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR Motorist Fails to Stop After Striking- Youngster Near Wrightstown Marie VanderHeiden. 5-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry VanderHeiden, who live about 3 miles from Wrightstown on highway 15, was seriously injured about 9 o'clock Saturday morning when sh< was struck by an automobile traveing toward De Pere while she was crossing, the road. The girl's skull was fractured and both arms were broken. The injuries are so serious that it is feared she will die. The motorist who struck the child did not stop after the accident but continued on his way to DePere. Po- lice in that city were notified but up to noon there had been no arrests.

Lloyd was born Oct. 11, 1923, in the Town of Kau-kauna, to the late P eter and Elizabeth (Dolan) Vander Heiden. On May 14, 1947, he married t he former Mildred Van Hammond in Little Chute at St. John’s Catholic Churc h. Lloyd served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II a nd was a member of the Urban Klister American Legion Post #436. He farm ed most of his life and served as supervisor of the Town Board of Kaukau na for many years. Lloyd was an active member of the Wisconsin Horse Pulle rs Association. He had a sense of humor, loved to sing and listen to count ry music and was the life of the party. Vander Heiden Joseph A., Kaukauna, Joseph (Joe) Vander Heiden passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday October 11, 2015. Joe was born on April 17, 1926 in the town of Kaukauna, son of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Dolan) Vander Heiden. On May 12, 1949 Joe married the love of his life Rosella Vander Heiden. This past spring, Joe celebrated his 66th wedding anniversary with his wife Rosella, who passed away on July 25, 2015.
Joe invested many years of hard work and labor into his family farm. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where he was a dedicated usher for weekly masses. Joe was also a past board member for the Town of Kaukauna Planning Commission, and also assisted in town elections.
Faith in God and his family were Joe's passions in life. He loved his pets, especially his dog, Chance. Joe was known for giving pony rides at local church picnics and keeping neighbors supplied with farm fresh eggs. Another true love of Joe's was music and managing the family band. He enjoyed socializing with just about everyone.
Joe is survived by his ten children: Janice (Gary) Meulemans, Donna (Jim) Schmidt, Yvonne (Glenn) Lemke, Jean (Grant) Grebe, Karen (Dave) Giese, Terry Vander Heiden, Sharon (David) Eichman, Lynn (Tom) Hermus, Jeff (Kim) Vander Heiden, and Gary (Wendy) Vander Heiden.

Van Vreede, Harvey T.Harvey Theodore Van Vreede, age 88, formerly of Little Chute, passed aw ay peacefully early Thursday morning, Sept-ember 29, 2005 due to heart com plications at Cherry Meadows, Appleton. He was born in the Town of Kaukau na February 5, 1917 to Albert and Ann (Vander Heiden) Van Vreede. He gradu ated from Freedom High School in 1935 as salutatorian. Harvey married Lorr aine (Verbeten) on April 13, 1943, who survives. He was a member of St. Jo hn Catholic Church in Little Chute. As a young man growing up in the Depre ssion era, Harvey worked a variety of "odd jobs" from farming to a canni ng factory. He was working in a paper mill when he answered his nation's c all to serve in January 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed. He im mediately started basic training and was stationed in Rolla, Missouri, dur ing the early part of his military service. He went from a private, to a t echnician third grade, to a master sergeant, then to the division headquar ters. Harvey was stationed overseas for over a year where he landed in Sco tland and then went to France where he was a personnel officer in the 103 rd Infantry, 75th Division in charge of payrolls and service records in h is outfit. Many times he was forced to find each soldier during action a nd pay him his allotment. He also helped rebuild bridges that had been des troyed by bombing so that our troops could continue to pursue the enemy. W hen the war ended he returned to his job as paper tester at Appleton Pape rs Locks Mill in Combined Locks. While working at the mill, he took a corr espondence course through DeVry Institute in electronics. He began servici ng televisions and radios out of his Kimberly home. After selling 30 set s, he took a leave of absence from his mill job and never looked back. Th is was the beginning of Van Vreede TV & Appliance. He was the first in t he area to sell color television aligning with RCA. Always looking for opp ortunity, another venture that he attempted in the 1950s was when he dabbl ed for a short time in the toy business when he started the Toy Corn er in Kimberly. Harvey was an energetic entrepreneur and pioneered in t he sales and servicing of color televisions, automatic washers and drye rs in the Fox Valley. Harvey remained active in the business until approxi mately 1996 when he retired. Harvey loved spending time up at his cotta ge on Boundary Lake playing volleyball, tinkering with his tractors, and s ocializing with relatives who also have cottages nearby. He and Lorraine t raveled extensively to Europe, Puerto Rico and other destinations final ly settling in a condominium in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, for the winter s. Harvey was a long-time member of the Fox Valley Golf Course as we ll as the Little Chute Businessmen's Association and the Jacob Coppus Amer ican Legion Post #258. Colette Nytes, of Kaukauna, age 93, died on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at St. Paul Home. She was born on April 8, 1914 in Wrightstown, the daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Vanderhyden) Van Lanen. On June 3, 1937 she married Clem Vandehey and he preceded her in death on January 12, 1982. Colette and Herbert Nytes were married on August 29, 1983 and he preceded her in death on May 10, 1996. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a member of the Altar Society and sang in the church choir. Colette was a crossing guard and enjoyed sewing, painting, crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Tony) Grosso; stepson, Ron (Mary Kay) Nytes; grandchildren: Annette, Steven, Michael, John, Susie, Lisa, Brenda and Michael; sisters: Mary (Bob) Kessler and Sister Ann Jude and brother: William (Mary Lou) Van Lanen. Colette is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, brothers: Ruben, Ralph, Norbert, Francis and Eugene Van Lanen; daughter, Ethel Vander Burgt and a granddaughter Michelle Vander Burgt.

Mary A. (Nelessen) Kessler, 95, formerly of Kimberly, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday, October 20, 2013. She was born October 28, 1917, daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Vander Heiden) Van Lanen. On May 30, 1940, Mary married Norbert Nelessen, and he preceded her in death on July 10, 1970. Then on November 24, 1976, she married Robert Kessler, and he preceded her in death on May 26, 2007. Mary was active in many different organizations including the Pierre Post #2778 of Appleton, a life member of the DAV Auxiliary of Appleton, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit to the William Verhagen Post #60 of Kimberly and she was also a member of the Fox Cities Chapter of the military order of the Cooties #29 of Appleton.

Van Lanen, Francis P., "Fra n" KaukaunaAge 79, was called home to the Lord on Tuesday, April 8, 2003. He was bo rn to the late Francis and Catherine (VanderHeiden) Van Lanen in Wrightsto wn on July 22, 1923. On May 1, 1947, Fran married Beatrice Bruecker at S t. Patrick Catholic Church in Askeaton. She preceded him in death in Octob er, 1971. On August 4, 1973, he married Elizabeth "Becky" Van Thull-Clanc y, also at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She, too, preceded him in dea th in October, 1993.Fran and his new wife Beatrice began dairy farming in Askeaton. He farm ed for nearly 30 years. He was a progressive farmer, one of the first to i mplement a new concept of milking cows — the milking parlor. He and his fa cilities were instrumental in the development of innovative material and f orage handling systems. After retiring from farming, he worked for Hoida L umber Company in Green Bay, followed by Ariens Corporation in Brillion, wh ere he retired. After retiring and moving to Green Bay, he remained tempor arily employed as a lawn maintenance technician until the age of 72. Aft er selling his home in Green Bay, he took up residence at St. Paul Man or in Kaukauna in May of 2002.Besides being an avid Packer fan, his intere sts included membership in various church organizations, singing in chur ch choirs, and carpentry. On June 8, 1943 she was united in marriage to Elmer Kieffer at Holy Cross Church. Ruth was a loving and caring mother who was the best cook and could always prepare a wonderful meal. She was also good at canning, crocheting, playing cards, talking on the phone to her sister, giving perms and doing hair of all the neighbors. Ruth was very family oriented and loved her Lord and family very much, and the time they spent together will always be treasured.

Mary Lou Vanden Heuvel, Kaukauna, age 80, passed away on Mother's Day, May 10, 2009, after a brave battle with cancer. Mary Lou was born August 22, 1928, in Wrightstown, daughter of the late Bill and Nellie (Vander Heiden) Nackers. She graduated from Wrightstown High School and was then employed at Ditter's Plumbing in Kaukauna. She was married to Bud (Cyril) Vanden Heuvel on August 17, 1950, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna. She happily spent her married years with her husband and family farming on their Town of Freedom farm. Mary Lou enjoyed many vacations traveling with family and friends. She could be ready to go on pretty short notice. She also considered cutting lawn a hobby and not a chore and couldn't wait for spring so she could do what she loved most.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband of almost 59 years; a son, Michael (Mary Jo) Vanden Heuvel, Seymour; and four daughters: Carol (Val) Uitenbroek, Darboy; Cindy (Ken) Uitenbroek, Appleton; Jane Vanden Heuvel, Appleton; Barb (Don) Micke, Freedom; 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Millie Nackers and Eileen Nackers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and four brothers: Joe (Iline), Charlie, George and Albert "Boots".
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday May 14, 2009, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, with Fr. Marty Fox officiating. Friends will be received on WEDNESDAY at Boettcher Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Parish Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. concluding the evening. Friends may call again directly at church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place in St. John Cemetery. Mary Elizabeth Dougherty, 82, Kaukauna, Wis., Beloved grandmother, wife, mother and daughter, died on Friday, May 18, 2007, at St. Paul Home. Mary was born Nov. 1, 1924, to the late Roman and Gertrude (Vander Heiden) Foegen in Appleton. Mary grew up in Kaukauna and graduated from Kaukauna High School. She married Edwin Mose Dougherty on June 2, 1947, and they enjoyed 24 years of marriage until his death in 1971. Mary worked at Thilmany's during World War II and at Pechman Photography for many years. She cherished many long-lasting friendships, especially with the members of the Club which included Margie Koglin, Florence Brewster, Ethel Wulterkins and Jane Johnson. Mary was a faithful and devoted member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and was a member of the Homemakers Club for many years. She also enjoyed a good cup of coffee while visiting with friends. Mary loved to travel and was fortunate to live in three new houses, one which was built before the street was put in. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Dougherty; and Kathleen (Jarl) Nilsson; two grandsons, Erik and Tom; her brother, Paul (Mary) Foegen; sister-in-law, Dorothy Foegen; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert (Gene) Dougherty and many dear friends, nieces, nephews and family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin and her brother, George Foegen.
Mary's Mass of Christian Burial will be 5 p.m. Monday, May 21, 2007, at ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2401 Main Avenue, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Paul A. Foegen, 73, Appleton, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family, after a three-year battle with cancer. He was born in Appleton, on Oct. 12, 1936, the son of the late Roman and Gertrude Foegen. Paul grew up and graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1954. He married the love of his life, Mary Kneip, in 1957. They made their home from then on in Appleton. Paul was employed by J.J. Plank Corporation for 39 years until his retirement in 1997.
Paul was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. His passion was fishing, hunting and anything to do with being in nature. He was a craftsman who could build and fix anything. Paul's pride was building his dream log cabin in the northwoods and spending as much time as possible there stoking the wood fire.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary; his sons and their families, Ken (Kelly) Foegen, Appleton; Keith Foegen, Appleton; Patrick (Nancy) Foegen, Appleton; and four grandchildren, Paul, Lauren, Neil and Max.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2331 E. Lourdes Drive, Appleton, with Fr. Don Zuleger officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 3 p.m. until the time of Mass.
Paul's family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to all the staff at Affinity Hospice for all their care and support for Paul.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Paul's name.
