    Obituary:
Vernita M. Rynders Hortonville, age 87, passed away on Mothers Day, May 13, 2007, at Cherry Meadows in Appleton. Vernita was born on July 24, 1919, in Hortonville, daughter of the late John and Mary (Henrickson) Fulcer. On July 23, 1938, she was united in marriage to Glenn Rynders. He preceded her in death in 1986. Vernita unselfishly gave herself to improve the quality of life for the residents in the village of Hortonville. In 1978, she wrote a successful application for a HUD Community Development Block Grant. The village was awarded the $106,000 requested. The monies bought the village the last available land on Black Otter Lake. In 1979, Vernita again wrote a successful grant to the state of Wisconsin. This was a follow-up to the block grant housing project. Vernita was the chairperson of the Housing Committee. As a member of the Park and Recreation Committee in 1981, she again wrote an application to develop Alonzo Park. As luck would have it, this site was an excellent choice to place the #2 municipal as well. For 25 years, she worked to get village leaders to see the value of preserving and restoring the Community Hall. Vernita was persistent in her campaign to save the hall, when it went up for sale during the 1980s. Prior to this time, she gathered information and wrote a successful application for the hall to be placed on the State Historical Register of Historical places. Several years later, another application, submitted by Vernita, to have the building placed in the ten most endangered historical properties in Wisconsin was approved. As historian of the village and a member of the Historical Preservation Committee, she helped convince village leaders to recognize the importance of this grand old building as an anchor to our Main Street and as a community center. Through her perseverance, Phase I of the restoration of the Community Hall was completed and Phase II of the project is now well underway. She was an integral part of the committee that worked to put together the very successful centennial of the village in 1994. She served on the steering committee for this event and was responsible for the historical displays presented. In March, 2000, Vernita was awarded the Carolyn Kellogg Award from the County Historical Committee and during this time she also wrote the history of the Hortonville Community Hall. Vernita was also in charge of Union Cemetery in Hortonville for nearly 21 years. She also served on the village board for a few years. Later, while serving as the Director of Operations for the village she wrote a successful grant for the water treatment plant and was involved in the planning and construction of it. Hortonville residents were blessed to have such an outstanding citizen. She also loved gardening, hunting, fishing and antiquing. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in New London.
She is survived by two sons Emery "Chum" (Ruth) Rynders, Hortonville and Norman Rynders, Rapid City, SD. Four grandchildren: Ross (Christine Congdon), Eric (Jody), Lt. Col. David (Lisa), and Steve. Six great grandchildren: Evan, Michael, Jessica, Daniel, Tanner and Dayton. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, Vernita is preceded in death by a brother Marvin, a daughter in-law Lynn and a grandson Ray.
Funeral services for Vernita will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Borchardt & Moder Funeral Home in Hortonville, with Rev. Lucretia Fehrmann officiating. Burial will be in the Hortonville Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
