Mildred Nelson 27 Nov 1910 20 Dec 2006 Little Chute, Outagamie, Wisconsin

    Obituary:
Nelson, Mildred F. , Kaukauna For nearly a century, Mildred Frances Nelson tended to her younger siblings, her parents and her many nieces and nephews at the family home on Maria Street in Kaukauna. On Wednesday, December 20, 2006, she died at the age of 96.
The eldest of three children, she epitomized the gracious, dutiful daughter. In her first job, Mildred accompanied her mother as she delivered milk to the residents of Kaukauna on a horse and wagon. Her sense of compassion led her to a career in nursing. For years, she assisted Dr. Neidhold in Appleton.
Her most significant work, however, was caring for her family. After her brother William's wife unexpectedly died, Mildred assumed a role in rearing her eleven nieces and nephews. Her handiwork and love is woven into their memories through poodle skirts, wedding dresses and elaborately decorated birthday cakes she made them. She provided the same nurturing love to her sister Kate's daughter as well as her many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Mildred, a gentle woman, was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Church. During the fall, she spent Sundays cheering on the Packers as she and her friends Lucy and Bud Lang held season tickets for many years. Although she lived nearly her entire life on the same street, she nonetheless traveled extensively across the United States and Europe with her many friends.
A woman who came of age during the Great Depression, Mildred always appreciated a good meal preceded by a vodka Gimlet and a topped off with Hughes' chocolates. She was a regular with her sister Kate at many of the area eateries, especially Van Abels, which she had frequented since her childhood. It's especially poignant that she died as Christmas approached, given her tradition of hosting a holiday dinner party for her nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews at the Hyland House in Kaukauna.
Her loving survivors are: Bill and Pam Nelson of Oshkosh; Mary N. Janssen of Little Chute; Fran Nelson and Peter Kordiyak of Hilbert; Roy and Yvonne Nelson of Kaukauna; Chris Torgeson of Appleton; John Nelson of Kaukauna; Karol Rogers of Lompoc, Calif.; Roger and Jackie Nelson of Combined Locks; Kathy Nelson of Kaukauna; and Robin and Dan Jansen of Kaukauna; Carrol Schweda Rae of Appleton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances (Hyland) and Roy Nelson; her brother William Nelson and sister-in-law Barbara (Mulry); her sister Kathryn Schweda; her nephew Jeffery Nelson; and her nephews-in-law Tom Janssen, husband of Mary, and Chuck Barca, husband of Kathy Nelson.
The family would like to thank the staff at Franciscan care for its care of Mildred. Friends are welcome to visit with the family after 10 a.m., on Friday, December 29, 2006, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna. A mass for Mildred will be held at 11:30 a.m. that day. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to charity.

    Obituary:
Ms. Mary Janssen, of Little Chute, passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at the age of 70 - but she had the spirit, energy and beauty of someone much younger. She was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on March 4, 1943, to William and Barbara (Mulry) Nelson. She spent her childhood in Kaukauna and attended Holy Cross Grade School and graduated from Kaukauna High School. Her beautiful green eyes attracted the attention of Tom Janssen of Little Chute and the two married on May 1, 1965. They had two children, Jeffrey John born in 1969 and Jaclyn Joy born in 1977.
Mary was the embodiment of love for her family. She was a constant companion to Tom with whom she loved to take nature walks and visit art shows. She was a kind, encouraging, and devoted mother. She was thrilled with anything her children did. Mary has been and always will be the best role model for Jeff and Jaclyn. Affectionately called GrandMary, she was a doting and playful grandmother and made countless trips to see her grandchildren in Chicago and North Carolina. Her granddaughter said she gave the best hugs and made the best cookies. She was the oldest girl in a family of 12 children. Her siblings admired her greatly and she loved and cared for them as a mother - even bossing them around on occasion. She always remembered birthdays and had just the perfect card for every occasion.
Mary was a dedicated community activist. She was a member of the Little Chute School Board for 25 years and served as the board's president for the last 18 years. She also served as a regional director for the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and served as its president in 2009. She was passionate about education - in particular, she sought to improve the lives of at-risk students. She was as compassionate as she was committed. Mary was a member of countless committees in Little Chute and at St. John's Church. She especially enjoyed serving as a member of the Little Chute Library, the Little Chute Beautification committee, and decorating the church.
Mary always had a witty remark. Her wit was only rivaled by her kindness and giving spirit. She had a wonderful eye and a distinctive style and her love of art was reflected in her home, her wardrobe and her jewelry. She had a thirst for knowledge. She read voraciously and cultivated an interest in astronomy, geology and art. She had the energy of someone much younger and enjoyed golfing with her friends. She traveled extensively and especially enjoyed service trips to Kenya to build schools with her son Jeff and his family. She was incredibly generous.
Survivors include her son, Jeff (Kristi) Janssen of Cary, N.C., daughter, Jaclyn (Brian) Hamilton of Chicago; grandchildren: Ryan and Jillian Mary Janssen and Lyla and William Hamilton; siblings, Bill (Pam) Nelson, Fran Nelson (Pete Kordiyak), Chris Torgeson, John Nelson, Karol Rogers, Roger (Jackie) Nelson, Kathleen Nelson, Robin (Dan) Jansen, sister-in-law, Jean (Bill) Massonet; brother-in-law, Jerry (Judy) Janssen. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband Tom, her parents, her aunts, Mildred Nelson and Kate Schweda, and her brothers: James, Roy and Jeff and her brother-in-law, Chuck Barca.
A Mass to celebrate Mary's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 16, 2013, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine Street, Little Chute, with Msgr. James Vanden Hogen officiating and will be preceded by a visitation beginning at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Little Chute Education Enrichment Foundation, the American Lung Association or the cause of your choice would greatly be appreciated. The best honor you could give Mary is to do a kind act for a child.
The family would like to thank the nurses in the ICU at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their compassionate care.
Mom, you taught us everything. We hope to give back to the world all that you have given to us.

    Obituary:
Royal E. "Roy" Nelson, age 66, of Kaukauna, passed away peacefully after a brave battle with cancer on March 15, 2013, at Cherry Meadows with his wife and daughter by his side.
Roy was born on June 3, 1946, in Appleton, Wisconsin the 4th child of the late Barbara (Mulry) and William Nelson. Roy attended Holy Cross Grade School and Kaukauna High School, and he left to join the Navy. Roy loved the Navy, traveling all over the world, and proudly served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. After serving in Vietnam, he met his lifelong partner, Yvonne Hartley, while stationed in Placentia, Newfoundland, and they married on December 11, 1971. They welcomed their daughter, Kimberly, five years later in April of 1977.
Roy loved his career in the Navy, traveling, and having the opportunity to live in many cities throughout the US. He retired in 1984 after 20 years of service in the United States Navy, and the family moved to Wisconsin from Virginia to be closer to the Nelson relatives. Roy loved family dearly, always traveling when possible to weddings for nieces and nephews, visiting his siblings in Alaska, and his extended family in Newfoundland.
When Roy retired from the military, he found a second career as an over-the-road driver. As always, he loved traveling all over the United States, seeing the sights that the country had to offer. He would often come home with great stories of the sights he'd seen and little trinkets from the places he'd been.
An avid fisherman and hunter, he cherished his time in Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Canada with friends and family, especially trips with his younger brother Roger. He was well known for his exceptional cooking skills including his popular potato salad, stuffed peppers, and his famous steaks and tri-tip. His sisters often referred to him as the family "Social Director," often throwing fish fries, planning trips, and trading novels.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Yvonne Nelson; daughter, Kim (special friend Mark Johnson) Nelson; siblings: Bill (Pam) Nelson, Mary Janssen, Fran (Peter Kordiyak) Nelson, Chris Torgeson, John Nelson, Karol Rogers, Roger (Jackie) Nelson, Kathleen Nelson, Robin (Dan) Jansen; brothers and sisters-in-law: Janet Cohen, Sheila (Wayne) Hartley, Camilla (Leonard) Newman, Doris "Doss" (Albert) Azznara, Richard Hartley, Dennis (Yvonne) Hartley, and Jackie (Alex) Petri. Roy is further survived by his cousins, Carroll Rae and many Mulry cousins; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and William; his dear aunts, Mildred Nelson and Kate Schweda; his brothers, James and Jeff; parents-in-law, Anna (Quilty) and Jack Hartley; sisters-in-law, Mary Murphy and Anne Marie Stevens.
Funeral liturgy for Roy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna with Rev. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Hours of visitation will be held on Monday, March 18, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Fargo Funeral Home, 400 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Kaukauna. Additional hours of visitation will be held at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to the American Cancer Society .
