Joseph H. Marston received his education in the public schools of Kenosha county, came to Appleton in 1852 and enlisted in May,1861, in Company E, Sixth Wisconsin Infantry, "The Iron Brigade," he being commissioned second lieutenant, being later made first lieutenant, and, September 17, 1862, after the battle of Antietam, captain, with which rank he was mustered out of service, March 19, 1864, on account of disability. Among the many bloody battles in which he participated may be mentioned Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was wounded by a gunshot in his head at South Mountain and was reported among the killed, notice being sent to Appleton to that effect; at Gettysburg a shell exploded at Captain Marston's feet, but the only injury he sustained was a sprained ankle, although he was thrown into the air; and at Antietam he was wounded in the leg. In addition, his experiences included being captured at Gettysburg and escaped with others after the three days' battle.
The following is an extract from a letter received from Col. R. R. Dawes, commanding the Sixth Wisconsin Regiment at the battle of Gettysburg:
"My Dear Captain Marston: I notice that you are appointed with others to go to Gettysburg to locate the monument for the 6th Wis. Reg't. I can at this time see your tall form and firm step as you pressed Co. E forward on a charge through that fearful storm of death. How they failed to kill you has always been a mystery to me. I expect to meet you at Gettysburg."
The color guards formed a part of Captain Marston's Company in this battle, in which he lost more than half of his men in killed and wounded. It was in this charge that the 2d Mississippi Regiment was captured by the 6th Wisconsin.
After completing his service, he returned to Appleton, where he engaged in the manufacture of wagon stock in company with R. Z. Mason, former president of Lawrence University; an enterprise in which he is still engaged.

    Biography:
CAPTAIN JOSEPH H. MARSTON, one of the old and honest citizens of Outagamie County, Wisconsin, who for many years has been closely identified with the business and public interests of the city of Appleton, has a distinguished record for service during the great Civil war. Captain Marston was born June 1, 1829, in Deerfield, New Hampshire, and is a son of George H. and Lucretia D. (Hilton) Marston, natives of New Hampshire of English descent. The family came to Wisconsin in 1843, by the Erie Canal and Great Lakes, and George H. Marston pre-empted one-quarter of a section of land near Kenosha, at a time when the Indians in this region were more plentiful than white men. In April, 1850, Mr. Marston, Sr., came to Appleton, where he engaged in painting, and for many years up to the time of his death served as justice of the peace. He died in the faith of the Baptist Church, when seventy-eight years old. In politics he was a Democrat. Nine children were born to George H. and Lucretia Marston, namely: Dr. S. L., a graduate of Rush Medical College and for many years a medical practitioner. Dr. S. L. Marston was surgeon of the Twelfth Wisconsin, and was with Sherman in his march to the sea. Residence, Hartford, Wisconsin; now deceased. Captain Joseph H., Appleton; Eliza and John, residing in Omaha, Nebraska; Adelaide, residing in Denver, Colorado; Susan, residing near Seattle, Washington; Robey D., who died at Roanoke Island while in the marine service during the Civil war; Josephine, who is deceased, and Martha, who is residing at Butte, Montana.
In 1854 Captain Marston was united in marriage with Miss Louise B. Belding, who came to Appleton from Hardwick, Vermont, with her brother, and she died in 1892, having been the mother of five children: Quincy, who is in the coal business in Appleton with his brother Charles, Cora, Russell and Myrtie, deceased. Captain Marston is a member of Waverly Lodge No. 51, and Appleton Chapter No. 47 of the Masonic fraternity, and is an honored comrade of George D. Eggleston Post No. 33, Grand Army of the Republic, having been one of the incorporators of the Wisconsin Soldiers' Home, and for ten years a trustee thereof. He has held numerous public offices and for two terms served as mayor of Appleton.

Civil War soldier's memory not forgotten
APPLETON - Pieces of the past are all that remain. Newspaper clippings. History books. An old gravesite.
Joe Gaerthofner, a self-professed historian, walked through Riverside Cemetery on Thursday holding manila folders filled with gray photographs, copied news articles and other papers that are part of his personal research. Wind whipped the tree tops overhead. "We know in the cemetery ... they have almost 300 people buried here who participated in the Civil War," Gaerthofner said. The sales consultant from Nordon Business Environments in Appleton began his research on the city's connection with the Civil War about five years ago - a deep curiosity that sprang from walks in the graveyard with his wife and small son. This June will be his third year hosting the cemetery's Civil War tour - an event of his creation sponsored by a local history museum. During the walk, he tells stories of those who fought in the War Between the States - tales of Appleton men and others who now rest forever in the Riverside ground.
On Thursday, Gaerthofner stood in the cemetery's Block E, a curved plot on the southwest side where a gray stone monument rises over green grass and proclaims a family name: MARSTON. Three sides of the monument list names and dates. Among them: "J.H. Marston 1829 - 1920."
This is one man - one story - Gaerthofner knows and focuses on in his tour. The historian can rattle off the facts and share the tales - the small details he calls the "puzzle" pieces that, with enough research, can paint a small picture of the past.
This Memorial Day, Americans will take part in remembering that past while honoring soldiers who lost their lives in service to the nation. During tomorrow's national day of remembrance, flags will be flown and stories will be shared - ways to ensure the sacrifices are not forgotten.
"We can all learn from other people's stories," said Matt Carpenter, deputy director of the History Museum at the Castle in Appleton. Carpenter said people can connect both "intellectually and emotionally" to the lives of those who came before us. "When we connect to those lives, we enrich our own lives," he said.
Barbara Cross of Redondo Beach, Calif., says it's interesting to learn about one's own connection to history - that is, examining the family line. The 53-year- old, who majored in history and political science at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, says she's dabbled in genealogical research. "I think it's a curiosity about our roots and where we come from," Cross said. "What makes us what we are." Cross lived in Wisconsin before moving to California about three decades ago. She is the great-great-granddaughter of Joseph Hilton Marston - the man whose story Gaerthofner has come to know.
A soldier from Appleton Appleton Public Library. Floor two. Wisconsin Collections. Back wall. Second shelf from the bottom. Another piece of the puzzle.
An old, tattered book with an original copyright of 1888 sits among other literature taking readers back to the 1860s, when American brothers faced each other on the battle lines. The title: "Soldiers' and Citizens' Album of Biographical Record." It is here one finds a simplified version of Marston's war tale - just a small piece of an adventurous life that stretched 91 years, 3 months and 21 days.
At the end of the two-page biography is a note attributed to Marston himself: "The foregoing statements I have carefully examined and so far as they relate to my record they are correct. (Signed) J. H. Marston."
The details outlined in the book, while few, are engrossing. It says Marston was a captain in Company E, 6th Wisconsin infantry. He partook in several well-known conflicts, including battles at South Mountain and Antietam in Maryland in 1862, and at Gettysburg in Pennsylvania in 1863.
"He was wounded three times throughout the course of the war," Gaerthofner said. The "Biographical Record" tells of a sprained ankle at Gettysburg, a gunshot wound to his left leg at Antietam and a shot to the head at South Mountain - at least one incident that led to the false publication of Marston's death.
"I know he was in a lot of different battles and was reported killed twice," said Joseph H. Marston III, the 89-year-old great- grandson of the captain who now lives in San Marcos, Calif.
False reports of death seem to run in the family. According to burial records at Riverview Cemetery, Marston III died in the early '90s. The 89-year-old California man clarified it was his son, Marston IV, who died of "acute leukemia" in 1991. The Post-Crescent informed the cemetery of the mistake. Only the burial record is incorrect; the grave marker at the Marston family plot has Marston IV.
War days Capt. Joseph H. Marston was born in New Hampshire on June 1, 1829, and as a teenager, moved to Wisconsin with his parents, George Marston and Lucretia Hilton - both of whom are also buried at Riverside. (Joseph Marston's burial record lists his mother's name as "Lucrepia" Hilton.)
Soon after war broke out in April 1861, Wisconsin Gov. Alexander Randall made a rally call for volunteers. In the April 27 edition of Harper's Weekly, Randall's telegraph response to the U.S. Secretary of War's request for men is published: "The call for one regiment will be promptly responded to, and further calls when made." A Civil War regiment was made up of about 1,000 men.
"Marston was one of these guys who originally volunteered," Gaerthofner said. Not only that, Marston played a key part in organizing the men of Appleton into a company - a group of 100. Gaerthofner said they came up short with only about half that number.
According to the 1990 book "In the Bloody Railroad Cut at Gettysburg," Marston, a tall gentleman of over 6 feet (who eventually earned the nickname "Tall Sycamore") gathered the volunteers in spring 1861 and headed off to a train depot. The book publishes an account from one recruit who wrote that "pretty nearly the whole of Appleton followed the band to the station, where the final goodbyes were said, and when the train started, cheered, waved handkerchiefs, and either smiled through tears or felt like doing so."
Perhaps one of the most interesting stories related to Marston's war service comes from an article published in the Milwaukee Sunday Telegraph on April 24, 1881 - two decades following the first gunfire at Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
Marston describes how the 6th Wisconsin regiment - a group that was part of the state's famous "Iron Brigade" unit - was swept into a bloody battle at a railroad cut during the first day at Gettysburg. Marston' s group attacked a Confederate regiment from Mississippi.
"In this charge, I ordered a (Mississippi) captain to give me his sword, or hand it to Lyman White, of my company," Marston wrote. When Marston heard orders of a Confederate surrender, he quickly stopped one of his men from stabbing the Mississippi captain with a bayonet.
In the Telegraph article, Marston said he wished to find the captain and give back the sword. "If this communication should reach this officer ... I will return him this sword," he wrote. No record exists of whether the weapon was returned.
There also is a story of how Marston was taken prisoner for a brief time at Gettysburg while seeking treatment at a makeshift hospital, Gaerthofner said, but there's "nothing substantial" to support that tale. According to the "Biographical Record," the captain was held prisoner from the evening of July 1, the first day of battle, until July 4, when he escaped and returned to Union lines. The account does not provide any other details.
Gaerthofner said Marston would come back to Appleton during the course of the war to hold fundraisers and recruit men. He was e ventually discharged from service in March 1864 for disability. When news of Lincoln's assassination reached Wisconsin in April 1865, Gaerthofner said ceremonies were held, and Marston was one of the men leading the procession up and down the main avenue. "The experience of Appleton (in the Civil War) kind of began and ended with Joseph Marston," he said. A full life lived. The captain went on to run a wagon stock company, and served as Appleton's mayor for two terms. An obituary copied from The Appleton Post-Crescent is attached to Marston's burial records. According to the Sept. 23, 1920, obituary, Marston died at his home, 769 Kimball St. The address no longer exists.
On Thursday, Gaerthofner stood near the Marston grave plot where more than 15 family members are buried. The historian mentioned how the captain did not have a Civil War marker like other soldiers.
"I think it shows a lot about Marston himself being a humble guy," he said.
Perhaps Marston's life wasn't defined by the three years he spent as a volunteer soldier. Perhaps his true accomplishment was the legacy he passed on - the Marstons that rest beside him at Riverside Cemetery and the present generation that keeps his memory alive.

    APPLETON POST-CRESCENT Monday, June 15,1964
James P. Buchanan The whole community of the Fox River Valley will feel the loss through an early death of James Buchanan, for a number of years a resident of the Green Bay area and for the last ten years of the Fox Cities. Mr. Buchanan's community contributions were extensive. He well deserved the 1952 Distinguished Service award of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Green Bay but since that time his interests and work on behalf of a variety of community projects expanded. Despite heavy business responsibility and a growing young family he was a leader in c h u r c h affairs, service clubs, hospital and medical projects, music and educational organizations and Scout groups. Mr. Buchanan combined his leadership ability with a deep sense of personal responsibility and a quiet and reasoned approach to the myriad problems he faced. His talents in this part of Wisconsin will be greatly missed.

James married Harkins, Marjorie 27 May 1943. Marjorie was born 26 Sep 1920; died 17 Feb 2004, Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Lenfestey, Josephine "Jodey'
Josephine Buchanan Lenfestey, "Jodey," passed away in San Francisco on Jan. 2, 2013, after a brief illness. Jodey was born on March 31, 1939. in Green Bay. to Frederick John "Ted" Lenfestey and Josephine Buchanan Lenfestey of De Pere, the first grandchild of Dr. James P. Lenfestey and Agnes Hurlbut Lenfestey of De Pere, named after her grandmother. Josephine Pond Buchanan and great-grandmother, Josephine Marston Pond of Appleton.
Jodey graduated from Milwaukee Downer (now University School of Milwaukee) in 1957 and Middlebury College in 1961, where she studied political science and Russian and became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. At Middlebury, Jodey developed a life-long love of skiing and jazz. An accomplished singer, she knew more than a thousand songs by heart.
After Middlebury she worked in Washington DC, for congressman John Lindsay of New York, then traveled through Europe and Russia before settling in Munich, Germany, where she worked for Radio Free Europe -- a broadcasting network designed to get information to countries behind the Iron Curtain. Fluent in German and Russian, she received a citation from the U. S. State Department for meritorious service after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963. After a brief marriage ended in divorce, she returned to the U.S. in 1967, where she worked at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, before moving to the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco in 1974 for the rest of her life.
The "life of the party," Jodey will be remembered for her many enduring friendships, generosity, patriotism, staunch support of the Republican Party and life-long loyalty to the Green Bay Packers. No one will ever know all those she helped in the course of her life, but they include her family, godchildren, and an extensive network of friends around the world.
She is survived by sister, Lynn Fey (Tom), Park City, Utah; brother, Jim Lenfestey (Susan), Minneapolis; and beloved nieces and nephews and grand-nephews and grand-nieces. A celebration of her life will take place over the Fourth of July weekend at the family cottage at Shore Acres.
Memorials may be made to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, founded by her father and enthusiastically supported by Jodey. Family members can be contacted at lynnfey@msn.com or jimfest@aol.com.

    Obituary:
Buchanan, Philip Edward 42 2/22/1967 3/2/2009 Philip Edward Buchanan died on Monday, March 2, 2009, in Portland. He was born in Hanover, N.H., on George Washington's birthday, Feb. 22, 1967. He attended Edison School in Appleton, Gerritts Junior High in Kim-berly, and Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wis. He was a 1990 graduate of The Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he met his life partner, his dearest Wendy Thomas. Following college, he secured a single engine commercial pilot's license for both land and sea at Hillsboro Helicopters in Oregon. His passion was float planes, and he spent many hours flying around both the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. After moving to Wisconsin, he was employed by Fox River Paper Company in Appleton in the human resources department, and was transferred to Housatonic, Mass., where its Rising Paper division was located. Once there, Phil decided to pursue his dream of building custom furniture, and apprenticed himself to Peter Thorne of West Stockbridge, Mass. Later, he set up his own shop in Housatonic, where he built beautiful pieces of furniture. Phil also served on the town library committee and was instrumental in establishing a regional guild for fellow furniture makers. Phil and Wendy were married in Portland, her home town, in August 1993. When in Housatonic, they built their dream home on a granite hillside. Their daughter Zoey was born in 2003, and the family raised bees, blueberries, Newfoundlands and a cat. In his senior year in high school, 1985, Phil was diagnosed with a head tumor. For 24 years, Phil met the challenges of managing this cancer through surgeries, radiation therapies, and medications. He and Wendy traveled, skied, canoed, swam, camped, drove Phil's 1976 Landcruiser, listened to music, and laughed together. In 2006, Phil became blind; he and Wendy determined to sell their home and his business and move to Portland. Phil enrolled at the Commission for the Blind where he began to learn braille, to acquire mobility skills, and to establish a workshop in his new home. Unfortunately, in 2008, the pressures of the tumor in his head took their toll, and Phil's health declined. In the last two months, Phil was bedridden in his home, where he enjoyed the company and appreciated the support of his friends and family. His father-in-law Chris and his friend Paul Ecker were especially faithful companions. Paul was an extraordinary friend. Phil was a person of simple values, of trust and hopefulness. He worked hard and laughed a lot - his sense of humor was wicked and wry and funny. He met people honestly; he was faithful. Phil met the challenges in his life with grace, and surmounted them with honor. Survivors include his wife, Wendy; their daughter, Zoey; his parents-in-law, Chris and Sarah Thomas of Portland; and a sister-in-law, Jennifer Thomas and her life partner, Ruth Zolock of Washington D.C. He is also survived by his parents, Robert and Bonnie Buchanan of Appleton, Wis; his brother, Gus and wife, Kara, and their daughters, Gwyneth and Iris of Burlington, Vt.; and his sister, Emily Buchanan Lehto and her children, Sydney and Robert of Appleton, Wis. He is also survived by many wonderful aunts, uncles, and cousins of the Glidden, Parker, Scanlon, Buchanan and Vitalis clans. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William E. and Josephine B. Buchanan, and John "Jack" M. and Iris O. Glidden. Phil is also mourned by many friends he loved and with whom he maintained deep relationships until his death. Remembrance services and a celebration of Phil's life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Cheatham Hall at the World Forestry Center, 4033 SW Canyon Road in Portland and in Appleton, Wis., in August. A memorial fund in Phil's name has been established at Camp Manito-wish YMCA. Contributions may be sent to this address: Box 246, Boulder Jct., WI 54512. Arrangements by Crown - Milwaukie 503-653-7076.
