    A PIONEER AT REST
Elizabeth Hunter was born in Scotland, near Dumfries, in the year 1816 and died (after a short illness) at the home of her son, Robert McMurdo, February 24, 1895. When she was six years old, her parents emigrated to Pennfield, Charlotte County, New Brunswick. In 1835 she was united in marriage to John McMurdo and in the spring of 1851 they moved to Wisconsin and commenced farm life on a farm about two miles west of the village of Hortonville. There for twenty two years she was the true help-meet of her husband in providing for their family of boys and girls. In 1873 they moved into the village and there she lived until called to her eternal home. As a member of Christ's Church she was a shining light. Always at her post of duty. When others became cold and negligent, her steady and patient endurance spoke more than words to chide them for neglecting the Master's cause. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom are still living, namely: J. H. McMurdo, Robert McMurdo, Mrs. J. H. Douglas, Mrs. Kate Douglas, Mrs. Isabella Steffen and Mrs. David Hodgins. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. H. Jack who resides in Greenville, and a sister in New Brunswick. Her illness was short, but for one so fully prepared to depart, no longer warning was needed. As a member of the Free Will Baptist church, the brethren and sisters mourn a great loss to them. As a member of society, an ornament and a very useful member has been taken away. As neighbors and villagers we shall feel that "Aunt Betty" McMurdo, as she was so familiarly called, was filling a sphere of kindliness and cheer in the hearts of all who knew her. The attendance at the funeral was very large and the floral tribute beautiful. Rev. Wm. Mitchell of Rosendale, her pastor for thirty years, preached the funeral sermon and paid a very high tribute to the excellence of her Christian character and her faithful membership in the Baptist church.

Read biography of Francis Steffen about Anna Steffen to verify her maiden name is the same.

    Biography:
Anna Steffen was born on July 27, 1863 in Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin to Jacob Steffen, Jr. and Isabella (McMurdo)Steffen. Her father died less than a year later (March 5, 1864) while serving with the Union Army at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Her mother Isabella later married Jacob's brother Francis (or "Franz") who was also a Civil War Veteran. With Francis, Isabella had at least 6 more children, so Anna grew up with a stepfather who was also her uncle, and numerous half-siblings who were also (interestingly enough) technically her cousins!

To make matters more interesting she married, on May 18, 1887, her first cousin Lewis Steffen, who was son of her father (and step-father's!) full brother John Steffen. (To put it another way, she and her husband had the same biological paternal grandparents -- Jakob and Mary Elizabeth (Houbreck) Steffen!

Both Lewis and Anna's parents (and grandfather Jakob Steffen) had immigrated from Germany in 1848 with several brothers, some of whom also settled in the Hortonville area. So they both grew up surrounded by Steffen uncles and cousins.

Anna and Lewis had tried briefly to homestead, as wheat farmers, in North Dakota, near Jamestown, in the late 1880's right after they got married. They had and lost a daughter there (Florence Jessie, born May 26 1889 and died August 18 1889). Back in Hortonville soon after, they had daughter Ercelle December 16 1890, and son Gerald Ira December 9 1897.

In Hortonville her husband Lewis had partnered with his brother Peter in a threshing business and in the purchase and operation of their farm. Peter lived with them as a single man. The Census of 1900 and 1910 also shows they had two servants. It appears their family was quite prosperous.

Lewis died in 1917. Anna followed on July 12, 1926. They are buried together in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin.

Anna married Steffen, Frank Lewis "Louis" 18 May 1887. Frank (son of Steffen, John and Stark, Applonia) was born 5 May 1858, Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; died 22 Oct 1917, Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; was buried , Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA. Funeral Services of the Late Ira Steffin Hortonville, June 4- The funeral services of Ira Steffin, who died at Appleton, May 29, were conducted on Sunday afternoon, June 1, by the Rev. W. Mitchell at the Union church, Hortonville. Mr. Steffin was a son of Francis and Isabelle Steffin. His father was a soldier of the civil war and died about the time the war closed, the G.A.R. post of Hortonville is named in honor of his memory. The subject of this notice was a young man of many excellent quailities of heart and mind, and his early demise id deeply deplored by a large circle of intimate friends. He was nearly 24 years of age, and died of that dread disease- consumption. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and his brethren attended the funeral in a body, conducting the exercises at the grave. Mrs. Steffin, his mother, and the brothers and sisters feel most keenly the bereavement they are called to suffer, and have the sympathy of all.
