    Obituary:
Captain John Denessen died at his home, corner fo Maple Avenue and Elmore St. at 12 o'clock last night of pneumonia. Mr. Denessen had not been in good health for about a year and last fall he was taken quite sick and since that time has grown gradually worse until last night when he died surrounded by his wife and children.
Mr. Denessen, who was on of the pioneer steamboat men of Wisconsin, was born in Holland, April 26, 1836. When he was twelve years of age his parents immigrated to this country going to Buffalo, New York. From that city, the family moved to Wisconsin, settling at Little Chute where they remained for some time and then moved to this city.
When a young man, Mr. Denessen learned how to operate an engine and worked as a steamboat engineer. He operated the steam ferry across the Fox River where the present Walnut Street bridge now is before that bridge was built. This ferry was operated by means of a chain across the river that was would about a spool on the boat. After the Walnut Street Bridge was built, Mr. Denessen ran a ferry for Elmore & Kelley, who were then operating the elevator, the ferry running between that point and the Beaumont house dock. He afterward operated the ferry for himself and his business increased to such an extent that he built a small steam ferry which he kept up until the present Main Street Bridge was built.
The first steamboat owned by him was the "William Denessen" which he sold to Julius Van Dycke who changed the name of it to the "Julius". Mr. Denessen then built a larger boat which he again called the "William Denessen". He used this boat to carry passengers between this city and De Pere and for excursion purposes. He afterwards traded this boat off and shortly afterwards built the steamboat "Arrow" which he operated for some time.
In 1883, he built the "John Denessen" which he rebuilt three years afterwards. In 1889, he purchased the present "Nettie Denessen" from L.G. Schiller. About three years ago Mr. Denessen sold his two boats to his sons, William, Joseph, Theodore and Cornelius, who still operate them.
Mr. Denessen was married in 1858 to Miss Nettie DeGreff, who at the time live in Allouez, and by who he had nine children, who survive him. They are William, Joseph, Theodore, Cornelius, Henry, John and Mr. Henry Berendsen, Mrs. E. Schwartz and Mrs. L. Rondou. After the death of his first wife, about five years ago, he married Mrs. Elizabeth Prince of this city by whom he has one child. The funeral will be held from St. Willebrod's Church Wednesday morning with interment at Allouez Cemetery.

    Biography:
CORNELIUS DENESSEN. Cornelius Denessen is one of the foremost men in mercantile circles of Green Bay, where for the past ten years he has been conducting a large grocery store. For many years his name was also connected in a promi- nent way with steamboating on the Great Lakes and he has taken an important part in the development of this representative industry. A native son of Wisconsin, Mr. Denessen was born in Fort Howard, October 7, 1867, and has lived his entire life in this part of the state. His father, John Denessen, was a native of Holland but came, at the age of twelve, with his father, Nicholas Denessen, to America, coming directly to Green Bay by sailing vessel by way of Quebec. Nicholas Denessen farmed for the remainder of his life in Bay Settlement and there the father of our subject attended school for a short time. At the age of sixteen he became interested in steamboating and was one of the first men to conduct a ferry across the Fox river, between Green Bay and Fort Howard. At first he took his passengers across by a rowboat but later built the first steamboat ever used for ferrying purposes on Green Bay or on the Fox river. He married Miss Nettie De Graff, of Belgium. Both have passed away. To their union were born nine children : Anna, the wife of H. Berensteen, a grocer in Green Bay; William, captain and owner of a vessel on Green Bay; Joseph, owner of a vessel, and a marine engineer, who resides at 867 Elmore street ; Captain Theodore J., also a vessel owner; Cornelius, of this review; Josephine, the wife of Ernest Schwartz, of Green Bay ; Henry, who is also engaged in passenger and freight navigation on Green Bay; Mary, who married L. Rondou, of Green Bay; and John, who resides in the same city. Cornelius Denessen acquired his education in the public schools of Green Bay and when he laid aside his books engaged as fireman on a lake vessel until 1888, when he was promoted to the position of engineer. In this capacity he traveled all over the Great Lakes and became familiar with the conditions and the best methods of navigation. In 1893 he bought a line of boats, which he called the Denessen Steamboat Line, and operated it until 1897, when lie sold the enterprise and built at Manitowoc, in partnership with John Johnson a steamboat which he called the "Two Myrtle." This vessel was used during the spring and fall months for freighting fish and carrying fishermen's supplies and during the summer time was in the fruit trade. For some time Mr. Denessen owned also an .interest in the steamer "Liberty," which was used mainly for carrying fish. In 1902, however, he sold out all his steamboat interests and bought a grocery store in Green Bay, which he has conducted since that time. He has built up a flourishing business, for his integrity and ability are well known and he has achieved a degree of success which places him among the leading business men of the city. He is also interested as a stock- holder in the McCartney Bank. Mr. Denessen married Miss Anna Zegers, who was born in Holland and came to America as a child with her parents, Peter and Mary (Tevoren) Zegers. Mr. and Mrs. Denessen have eight children: Hiram, aged twenty-two, who married Miss Mabel Conroy, of Neenah, Wiscon- sin; Arthur, nineteen years of age, and Myrtle, seventeen, who live at home; Elmer, aged fifteen; Ethel, thirteen; Dominick, ten; Raymond, eight ; and Magdalene, six. The family are devout adherents of the Roman Catholic church, holding membership in St. Patrick's church of Green Bay. All during his active life Mr. Denessen's interests have been closely associated with those of Green Bay and his work has been a factor in the city's development.

Cornelius married Zegers, Catharina Johanna "Anna" 28 Nov 1889, Green Bay, Brown, Wisconsin, USA. Catharina (daughter of Zegers, Peter and Tervooren, Maria Petronella) was born 7 Jul 1868, Overloon, , Noord-Brabant, Netherlands; died 8 Dec 1942, Green Bay, Brown, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Family History Researcher:
The following is an account of family history hand written by Jeanne (Denissen) Hendricks.

The Vande Lieffort family was mostly farmers. Pretty successful. Peter Vande Lieffort only had 5 daughters. My mother and Gertrude were the oldest. Then Freda, Addie and Dorothy. Mom worked hard on the farm and she always wore long sleeves because she wanted her skin to stay white like a lady. Her birth name was Geraldine Henrietta. And they always called her Etta. Mom was the leader of the Lieffort family. She and Freda were very close. They lived about 6 blocks from each other. They talked on the phone a lot. Sometimes mom would ask me to run over to Freda's to pick up something while she was on the phone and when I came back she would still be on the phone. They got together and helped each other paint and wallpaper. Saturday they would get together with the husbands and play sheepshead. They switched off houses. All the kids went along. We had a ball playing hide and go seek, especially at our house as it was so big upstairs. They would have pies, cake, coffee and homemade rootbeer.

Christine told me quite a bit about Frank and Etta's life. She was a beautiful bride and Frank looked like a House on the Prairie groom. He got better looking as he got a bit older. I think they started out on a farm or they may have rented the house on Michigan street. It was a 2-family house. I think he worked at Hockers brickyard. Then they moved to a farm for a few years on Scray's Hill. This wasn't successful so he and Pete Lambert operated a lumber camp in Ladysmith. The family moved and lived in something like an army barracks. This was successful for a number of years. They had Gertrude and Christine - maybe Clara. During this time, there was a forest fire and they almost died, but somehow Frank drove the horse & buggy out of the flames. They were slightly burned. They sold the lumber camp and somehow Frank didn't get his fair share, but what he had he put down on the Michigan Street house, rented it out and then lived on the Scray's Hill farm again. Then in 1931 they moved into the bottom half of the Michigan street house and he worked at trhe brickyard. During this time, Gertrude and Christine worked as housekeepers for some wealthy families. They turned their small wages over to Frank to support the rest of us. They couldn't go to high school. They moved to town when I was one month old. Frank also worked on building the Claude Allouez bridge. Then he went to work for the city of De Pere driving truck. That was a good steady job. Some of the most exciting times I can remember are when it snowed and he came and picked us up and we rode with him to plow the snow.

Frank and Etta were very much in love and had fun together. He was a storyteller and kept us laughing about the funny things at work. The first thing I know I can remember is him running in the house and saying "I'm okay Etta. Barney & Hank went through the ice on the river by the college. I have to go help out." Hank Van Vonderen was the street superintendent and there was an election and dad won. Fred Hendricks was one of the people he beat out. He was made street foreman on the east side. Then when John McCabe died he got both east and west De Pere. Things went okay for us until 1944 when mom got sick. She died in 1946 and it almost killed him. He lost his love and his best friend. She was sick and in and out of the hospital for 2 years before she died with stomach and bowel pain. In about 1932 she had a breast removed but no one knew about cancer then. They just removed some of the tissue and pulled it together with thread. Dr. Kersten took care of her and then he died. Then 6 months before Aug 19, 1946 we took her to Madison Univeristy Hospital. Right away those doctors said, "Didn't they know she has cancer?" They operated on her and she had a colostomy. She stayed there a month and dad stayed in a home near the hopsital. I went to stay with Toots and her family on North 6th street and walked to high school every weekday. John was a baby and Rick was 2. He was bright and would call my name when he saw me come home. Usually he was out in the playpen. He was so cute and happy. The family all had bad flu and his fever stayed high for days. My theory is that this is when something happened to his brain. I think this was a happy time for the family. Smitty was still at Cleveland Cliffs Coal Company. Bob "Beeler" lived up to his name. There were high steps on the back porch and he would say "Hear go " and jump off. He was trained and every time he had a bowel movement he would yell "pass the toilet" and someone would get him some toilet paper. One day he couldn't quite make it in time and sat on the curb and did his job and was yelling "pass the toilet." Gertrude was a little embarrassed but had to laugh. In the last 6 months she came a lot and helped take care of Etta. John was sitting up and she would get him some toys and he would be happy. I think Carolyn and Ken were in St. Boniface School. It was a terrible summer for Frank and Etta and all of us. She was in so much pain. We just went to the doctor's office and got bottles of morphine and Frank or I would give her a shot every 4 hours. She would be crying for it after 3 hours. She remained awake and able to talk until the last 3 - 4 days.

    Obituary:
Ladwehr, Grace E. Grace "Mike" (Ambrosius) Landwehr passed away on May 16, 2012 in her home in De Pere, surrounded by her family. She was 92. Grace was born on March 28, 1920, the third of eight children. She spent her childhood on her family's farm on County Road EE in West De Pere, and it would be just a short distance from here, on Grant Street, where she would build a family and a life with her husband Carl. The two were married on November 7, 1942, and together they raised 13 children, instilling in them a deep faith, unwavering strength and soft, loving hearts. The strongest lesson Grace taught her children, however, was the impenetrable bond of family. Grace was the nucleus of a growing family that numbered more than 100 when she died. Over the years, her home served as a gathering place in times of celebration, a place of comfort and strength in times of trial, and a joyful place in the ordinary days. Around her kitchen table, brothers and sisters formed unsinkable bonds, and in her backyard, cousins moved beyond family ties to develop lifelong friendships. A deep Catholic faith wove through Grace's 92 years. She was an active, lifelong member of St. Boniface and Our Lady of Lourdes parishes. Grace believed deeply in prayer, and she instilled this faith in each of her children. They know she was welcomed into the Lord's loving arms. Grace is survived by her 13 children: Judy (Mike) Parins, Jerry (Ellen) Landwehr, John (Eileen) Landwehr, Chuck (Pat) Landwehr, Dan (Judy) Landwehr, Joan (Dan) Van Grunsven, Betty (Dan) Danen, MaryKay (Jack) Bressers, Jim (Laurie) Landwehr, Diane (Ed) Kiley, David (Judy) Landwehr, Peggy (David) Blondheim and Barbie (Mark) Van Bellinger. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by 34 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren. Grace is also survived by two sisters, Ethel (Bob) Liebergen and Beulah Van Schyndel; sister-in-law Marcella Ambrosuis; in-laws, Vernon (Carol) Landwehr, Rita Haase, Don (Marian) Landwehr, Fritz Landwehr, and many nieces and nephews. Grace is preceded in death by her husband, Carl; infant daughter Patricia and her parents, Leonard (Minnie) Ambrosius. She is also reunited with her brothers, Raymond and Vernon Ambrosius; sisters, Rita Cleven, Stella Treml and Henrietta Gerbers; granddaughter, Susan (Parins) Nickel, and many brothers and sisters-in-law. Friends may call from 4-8 pm at RYAN FUNERAL HOME in De Pere on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Prayer service will be held at 4:15 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family, on Monday, May 21, 2012. Visitation beginning at 9:00 am, with service at 10:30 am. Father Tim Shillcox, O.Praem officiating. Interment at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Please visit www.ryanfh.com to send online condolences to Grace's family. Ryan Funeral Home & Crematory of De Pere is assisting the family with arrangements. God saw she was getting tired, and a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around her And whispered, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes we watched her suffer, And saw her fade away, And though we loved her dearly, We could not make her stay. A Golden Heart stopped beating, Hard-working hands to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
