    Obituary:
Transcription: From the (Antigo) Weekly News Item April 15 1893 -- an excerpt from the Appleton Post followed by a brief comment: "'Peter Olk one of the pioneer settlers of the town of Dale, who died recently was born in Germany, June 27, 1827. He came to Milwaukee in 1857. After one year's residence in that city he removed to his farm in Dale, where he has since resided. In 1850 he was married to Margaret Miller, sister of Matthias Miller of Dale. The widow and six children are left to mourn the loss. - Appleton Post.' Deceased was the father of John Olk, one of Antigo's most respected citizens. He and his famiy attended the funeral."

NOTE: This notices fixes the date of his marriage as 1850, which would be before his move to the U.S. and 9 years before his oldest son John J. Olk was born. So that is quite doubtful, and does not agree with the account in Wisconsin Its Story and Biography by Eliot Usher, excerpt also attached as Story to Peter and Margaret Olk's record. Note: this obituary was definitely written April 15, 1893. Other sources also indicate Peter, Sr. death in April 1893. But his gravestone says 1895. So my guess is the gravestone was changed later, and in the process they screwed up the date on his gravestone.

    Biography:
Peter Olk, son of Johann Jakob Olk (or, Olck)and Margareta (Reh) Olk of Germany, came to the United States from that country in 1857 (though one source says 1855). He was from a town near the border with Luxembourg, just north of Trier, called "Olk" (it still exists)! He originally went to Milwaukee but was in Dale, a small farming hamlet near Hortonville, in Outagamie, Wisconsin by about 1858. By 1860 he had married Margaret Miller (or, "Mueller"), sister to Matthias Miller (Mueller) also of Dale. Margaret and Matthias had also come over from Germany about the same time as Peter.

Peter and Margaret had at least 7 children: John, Matthias, Bernard, Peter Jr., Annie, Lucy and Margaret.

Their family had a close association with the Steffen family, especially John and Appolonia Steffen whose farm adjoined their own. Two of Peter and Margaret Olk's children (John and Annie) married children of John and Appolonia Steffen, and one other (Lucy) married a son of John Steffen's brother Ignatz.

The Olk family, many of whom remained in the Dale/Hortonville area, was prominent enough in the Hortonville area that one of the main streets in town is called "North Olk Street."

Peter was a farmer all his life, and by all accounts a pretty prosperous one. He joined the 47th Wisconsin Volunteers, being mustered in during February 1865 and mustered out that same September.

Towards the end of his life, he also traveled back to his home county (by ship) for a visit, arriving back in New York City with his wife Margaret and daughter Margaret, on November 4, 1891. He died less than two years later, in April 1893. The death year on his grave marker is inaccurate -- this writer has a copy of his April 15, 1893 obituary as evidence of date of death.

Peter married Mueller, Margaret Bef 1859. Margaret was born Abt Nov 1834, , , , Germany; died 6 Dec 1918; was buried , Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
From Wisconsin Its Story and Biography Lengthy Article on John B. Olk, 1914 by Eliot Usher
The rise of John 0lk in his particular field of industry has been steady and constant, taking him from the status of a day laborer to that of superintendent of bridges and buildings of the Ashland Division of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company, with headquarters at Antigo. He has also advanced in other lines as well, and is today a member of the directorate of the Langlade National Bank of Antigo, Wisconsin. Mr. 0lk has been located here since 1881, coming here at the time when the old Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railroad, now the 0. & N. W., was put through to Antigo. He began work for the Northwestern in the spring of 1881, commencing his duties as a day laborer at Eland Junction, and coming to Antigo in the autumn of the same year, still as a common workman. In 1882 he became a crew foreman, so well had he devoted himself to his duties, and so capable did he prove himself in the mechanics of bridge and other building, his advance from then was steady, and in 1903 he became superintendent of buildings and bridges for the Ashland division, as has already been stated. Mr. 0lk was bom in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, on April 25, 1859, on the farm of his parents, who were Peter and Margaret (Miller) 0lk, both of whom were bom and reared in Germany, and who came to America in 1855 and 1857 respectively. They were married here, and settled down to a life on the farm, in which they were successful and happy. The father died in 1894, on the old farm, while the mother still lives, aged eighty years. Mr. 0lk was reared on the farm home, and attended the country schools. He entered railroad work as a boy and from then until now his activities have been along constructive lines in the department of railroad service already outlined. In 1886 Mr. 0lk was married to Mary E. Steffen, a daughter of John and Aplonia Steffen, and a sister of Dr. I. D. Steffen, of Antigo, of whom a sketch appears on other pages of this work. She was a farmer's daughter, and her birth occurred on the farm adjoining the one on which Mr. 0lk was born, so that they were acquaintances from childhood. Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. 0lk. Henry, the eldest, is a mining engineer at Hurley, Wisconsin; Harold is a druggist in Clintonville, Wisconsin ; Clarence is a court reporter in Antigo; and John and Merritt are attending high school in Antigo. Mr. 01k is a member of the Blue Lodge of Masons, as well as the Chapter and Commandery, with aflSliations in the Consistory, having taken his thirty-second degree. He is also a member of Tripoli Temple, Ancient Order of the Mystic Shrine. He is further fraternally identified by his membership in the Modern Woodmen of America. In the way of public service, Mr. 0lk has devoted six years to a place on the city council, where he performed praiseworthy service in the best interests of Antigo, and he is a stockholder in the Langlade National Bank, in which he is a director. A citizen of many admirable qualities he has a foremost place among the leading men of the city.

John married Steffen, Mary E. 4 May 1886. Mary (daughter of Steffen, John and Stark, Applonia) was born 1 Oct 1861, Hortonia, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; died 29 Apr 1929, Antigo, Langlade, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

Paula Owen: "Aunt Lucille (Steffen) and little Eugene (Lucille's brother) both came down with Diptheria. Grandma (Lucy Olk) Steffen put the two of them out on the back porch to isolate them from the rest of the family. Grandma Steffen also made my Grandma Veronica B. (e.g. Veronica Alma Steffen Boutellier) stay out there to take care of them. Aunt Lucille said my Grandma (Veronica Steffen) was crying that she didn't want to die. Course ole tough Aunt Lucille told her to stop crying she wasn't going to die. Their little Eugene was in bed next to Aunt Lucille and he called his Mom (Lucy Olk Steffen) to his side. He pointed up to the corner of the room and told his Mom to look at the beautiful angel. He told his Mom the angel wanted him to come with her and asked could he please go. Great Grandma told him yes if he wanted to. He passed away later that evening in peace Aunt Lucille said."
