ELMER JOHN SMITH (1909-1986) & DOROTHY VAN HOOF (1912-1996)Elmer Smith was the 10th of 13 children, but the 6th child and 2nd s on of John and Anna. This birth order was significant. When Elmer's next o ldest brother, Earl, was "on his own," four sisters were next in line, lea ving Elmer to manage the farm when their father could not. This occurr ed a number of times, due to John's ill health and accidents. When Elmer w as 14, for example, Elmer did the plowing when his dad was in the hospit al at Rochester, Minn. He continued farm work at home until age 22 wh en he joined his brother Earl's bridge building company. By then Elmer's t hree younger brothers, Harold, Florian and Ruben, were old enough to do fa rm work.Later in life Elmer admitted he didn't like farm work. "I had started t oo young and was working too long. I hauled in hay day after day. I miss ed a lot of days in grade school because of work, especially in the sprin g, for seeding. I also didn't go to high school because I was needed at ho me." But he liked bridge building and often talked about it. He continu ed that work from age 22 to 28 (1931-37).Elmer Smith and Dorothy Van Hoof met at a wedding in 1929. She was 17 a nd he was 20. Their dating was interrupted when Dorothy graduated from hi gh school and attended Badger Business College in Green Bay and boarded th ere (June, 1930). Dorothy, the oldest of five daughters of Anton & Elizabe th Schmitt Van Hoof, was told by her parents "no steady boyfriend whi le in school." They reconnected after her graduation (June, 1931), but dat ing became difficult due to their jobs. Elmer was working in constructio n, sometimes in N. Michigan, and Dorothy was employed in the fund raisi ng business office for the Salvatorian priests at St. Nazianz, WI, from 19 31-34. Every other weekend Elmer drove from his construction job to St. Na zianz, picked up Dorothy and continued on to Freedom. The route was then r eversed a day or two later. This continued for three years before they mar ried on May 1, 1934, at St. Nicholas Church, Freedom. Dinner was serv ed at the Van Hoof home. Dancing followed at the Nightingale Ballroom, ne ar Kaukauna, WI.There wasn't a honeymoon. The young couple stayed at Dorothy's parent's ho me for the night and then moved to Cavour, WI (near Laona) where Earl Smit h's bridge building crew was working. In July they moved again with the cr ew to Channing, Mich. Four others lived in a trailer with the newly wed s. Dorothy cooked for a crew of seven in a kitchen with a tar paper and st eel roof attached to the trailer. Rocks from the dynamite blasts would res ound off the roof. The kitchen had neither refrigerator nor water, which s he had to get from the creek, where she also washed clothes on a wash boar d. She also kept "business books" for Earl.Learning that Dorothy was pregnant (Bob), Elmer's mother, Anna, encourag ed them to move to the Smith Home Place. They lived in the upstairs of Elm er's parent's house, which now had running water for the first time (1934 ). Bob was born there (1935) during a blizzard. "To find us, Grandpa (Smit h) had to flag down the doctor on the highway."Elmer started his own trucking business, picking up cans of milk from farm ers and hauling them to his sister and brother-in-law, Berdina & Joe Konkl e's cheese factory. Later in the day, Elmer hauled coal to homes, business es and Freedom High School. For the next three years Elmer only worked pa rt time for his brother, Earl.Elmer and Dorothy decided to buy the farm that Elmer's parents had purchas ed across the road from the Home Place even though the farm buildings h ad not been used for some time. Elmer recalled, "The place was a shamble s. The stave silo was shot. We had to pull it down. The granary floor w as shot, so the house had been used to store grain. Mold was everywhere ." In the winter of 1935-36, while pregnant with her second child (Jack ), Dorothy used stain and varnish remover on the floors of that house. " We sanded and sanded." The walls were repaired by hired help who install ed "Upson Board." Grandma Smith helped by taking care of Bob.
Jack was the last Smith to be born on the Home Place. It was June, 1936, o ne of the hottest days of this hot summer. The temperature was 102 degree s. Jack almost died from dysentery. Dorothy's doctor told her not to ha ve another child for three years and suggested she talk to her pastor abo ut birth control since she was Catholic. She did. He recommended birth con trol and recommended a book on rhythm. Dorothy bought it, but "I didn't re ad it because I was already pregnant with Ron. I used rhythm all righ t; I had one after another." The remaining five children were born at a ho spital (St. Vincent's, Green Bay): Ron, Betty, Carole, Bill and Barbara.
Elmer farmed and continued his trucking business until his father, John, d ied, Dec.26, 1942. Elmer and Dorothy were reluctant to buy the Home Pla ce as were other family members. There was too much work on the large far m, a big house to "keep up" and 30 "unproductive" acres consisting of wood s, wetlands and a creek. Florian consented to do the chores on the farm, b ut told Elmer "If you don't buy this farm, I will quit today. I won't wo rk for anyone else." So they did buy in March, 1943.
Elmer sold his milk route to his brother, Earl, and his coal route to Haro ld Vandenberg, husband of Dorothy's sister, Mae. The farm "across the roa d" went to Elmer's sister, Berdina and her husband, Joe Konkle. Bob, Ja ck and Ron were happy to have cousins their age next door - Anita and Vern on Konkle. Their older brother, Urban, occasionally played baseball with t hem, too.
Renovations were needed on the Home Place, but nothing could be done unt il after World War II due to rationing and scarcity of materials. Then t he house was renovated, a double stall garage replaced the wood shed, a n ew machine shed was built as was a new milk house. The "lean-to" additi on on the north end of the barn was removed as were the horse stalls. Stan chions for cows, a pen for calves and for a bull and an automatic barn cle aner were installed.
To help pay for these improvements, Elmer and Dorothy leased land in 19 48 for a quarry to Elmer's brother, Florian, and their nephew, Elmer Konkl e, who needed rock to crush for a highway job for which they had contracte d. The quarry's production was short lived (a few years): the rock was ve ry hard, only low levels of dynamite could be used due to the proximi ty of buildings in the village, springs required constant pumping of wat er and Florian was disabled in 1952. So the hole filled with water and bec ame an excellent swimming and fishing spot for the Smith family. Elmer sto cked it with rock bass and other fish.
Elmer Smith began to develop heart problems in the 1950s. Heart attacks st arted in 1959 at age 50 and he began to think of alternatives to farmin g. He needed to work because son, Bill, was age 9, and Barbara, 6. The old er children were not interested in farming. Bob and Ron were studyi ng to be Catholic priests, Jack was working in a printing business and h ad married by then (Ruthann Wachel), Betty was in college prepari ng to be a teacher and Carole was in high school. So the Smith Home Pla ce was sold to Bill Gonnering in 1960. (See Appendix D for pictures of far m.) Elmer and Dorothy kept a lot in front of the quarry next to Jack and R uthann and built a house for themselves. Elmer then took the maintenance j ob at St. Nicholas Church and School. This was hard work, but didn't ha ve the same pressures of farming. Nevertheless, it eventually proved too d ifficult for Elmer's health to bear and he retired after 12 years in th at labor.
Elmer Smith died of a heart attack in his home on Oct.7, 1986, after spend ing the day with Dorothy, his wife of 52 years, and his sister, Mabel a nd her husband, Herman Schwartz, as they visited Our Lady of the Sacred He art Shrine at Polonia, WI, near Stevens Point. The day before had also be en a pleasant one for him reminiscing with Donald and Melvin Brittnache r, his nephews from California.
In Ron Smith's homily for his dad, he stated, "His faith was not highly vi sible nor outwardly pious…. Underneath - his life rested on steady and fi rm principles…. Dad worked in construction, sometimes as foreman of the cr ew…. He hauled milk and coal. He was a dairy farmer…. He was custodi an of this church…. He also served the parish as trustee under 4 or 5 past ors… and served as an usher and Communion distributor. In the civic commun ity, he served 17 years on the Freedom School Board."
Dorothy continued to live in their home until her death on Sept. 13, 199 6. This property then stayed in the family when Elmer Smith's nephew's (El mer Konkle) son, Steve Konkle and is wife Pat (Van Schindel) bought it. Ot her members of the Konkle clan had purchased land on the Smith Farm earlie r. They are descendants of Joseph and Berdina Smith Konkle. This is fitti ng since Berdina is the namesake and granddaughter of Albertina "Berdin a" and Anton Smits. Joe and Berdina's son, Elmer Konkle and his wife, Beve rly Riggles, had purchased land from Elmer & Dorothy Smith. Beverly, n ow a widow, remains on the property, and three of her sons, Steve, Ja ck & Russell and their families live in homes next to hers.

Ziegler, Genevieve W. ( Gen Smith)Genevieve W. Ziegler (Gen Smith), formerly of Sherwood, age 83, went peace fully to the arms of her Savior, while surrounded by her family, on Saturd ay, July 15, 2006. The oldest of six children, Gen was born on September 1 6, 1922, to the late Earl and Ella (Murphy) Smith in Oneida, WI. She atten ded Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from Freedom High Sch ool in 1940. On November 3, 1945, Gen married Carl Ziegler. They spent t he first twenty years of their married life at Air Force bases in Kansa s, Texas, Massachusetts, Illinois, and the Philippine Islands. After retir ing from the Air Force, Gen and Carl built their home on Lake Winnebago ne ar Sherwood, which became a haven for her family.For sixty years of her life, Gen courageously faced the challenges of Mult iple Sclerosis. In spite of her illness, Gen was an active member of Sacr ed Heart Parish in Sherwood where she spent countless hours as a library v olunteer. Gen's beautiful ceramic creations are treasures to all who recei ved them as gifts from "Aunt Gen." Gen and Carl enjoyed traveling througho ut the U.S. visiting Air Force friends. Valeria Ann Huss was bo rn on April 7, 1924 in Oneida, WI, the daughter of the late Earl and El la (Murphy) Smith. She attended Immaculate Conception Grade School in Onei da and graduated from Freedom High School in 1943. On May 13, 1944 she mar ried her high school sweetheart Clifford Huss at Immaculate Conception Chu rch in Oneida. They lived and farmed in the Town of Freedom until their re tirement in 1983. Valeria also worked for Zaugs Catering Service and for t he Aid Association for Lutherans. She was an active member of the Christi an Mothers at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and served a term as presiden t. She enjoyed her retirement years with Cliff at "The Cabin" in Lakewoo d, WI. She loved golfing, crocheting and being with their many friends. S he also volunteered countless hours at St Mary's of the Lakes parish in La kewood. Some of Valeria's most cherished memories were the many family cam ping trips, her travels with Cliff, which included Europe, Hawaii and Flor ida, and the busy holiday weekends when the children, grandchildren and gr eat-grandchildren would gather at the cabin.Valeria is survived by her husband Cliff; four daughters, Joan (Ron) Herms en, Winona, MN; Ellen (Bruce) Hanlon, Menasha, WI; Diane (Tom) Perillo, Hu dson, WI; and Sharon Huss, Appleton, WI; three sisters: Genevieve Ziegle r, Eunice (Bob) Romenesko, and Mary Ellen Kavanaugh; two brothers, Gera ld Smith, and E. Mike (Donna) Smith; sisters and brother-in-law: Evelyn Ra dloff, Marie Coffey, Linda Garvey, and Emil (Anna Mae) Huss; ten grandchil dren: Kristine (Tim) Tibor, Pam (Don) Springstroh, Tina Hermsen, Brad (Jen nifer) Hermsen, Carrie (Jeff) Berge, Gregg (Tina) Hanlon, Anthony, Micha el and John Perillo, and Ella Huss; six great-grandchildren: Megan and Nic holas Springstroh, Hunter Tibor, Todd and Kathryn Berge, and Paige Hermsen .She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, David and Larry Huss a nd several brothers and sisters-in-law.Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Tuesday at St. Nicholas Cathol ic Church, Freedom with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Burial will be in t he parish cemetery. Earl "Mike" Smith, age 78, of Eau Claire, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Mike was born on April 8, 1934 in Oneida, Wisconsin to Earl and Ella (Murphy) Smith. He graduated from Freedom High School in 1951. After attending the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree. He was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture as a soil conservationist for thirty years and retired January 1, 1987. He purchased 20 acres south of Eau Claire, built a house and started Smith's Tree Farm. This hobby provided joy for many families at Christmas time.
Mike and Donna spent their winters in Arizona and met many special friends. Mike took pride in the lake house built in Birchwood, Wisconsin, which has become a place for his family to gather and enjoy. Mike hunted, fished, raised beef, enjoyed cooking, photography and family. He is survived by his wife Donna of 56 years and children Kathryn (Brad) Olson, San Ramon, CA., Dennis (Lisa) Smith, Colfax, WI., Janeen (John) Whelihan, Chippewa Falls, WI., Sandra (Michael) Drace, Hudson, WI., Robert Smith, Eau Claire, Michelle (Ben) Jacobson, Castle Rock, CO., Greg (Dr. Jennifer) Smith, Eau Claire and Gary (Dee Dee) Smith, Orlando, FL.
Grandchildren Kurt Olson, Makenzie and Parker Drace, Delaney and Jarett Smith, Isabella and Brett Jacobson, Caitlyn and Nicholas Smith, Chase Smith and Cameron Day. Neenah - Gordon J. Brittnacher, age 90, Saturday, August 22, 2015: Gordy woke early Saturday and spent the morning outdoors tending his gardens which he dearly loved. After lunchtime, Gordy strolled into the backyard, lay down under a large Ash tree in the sun-dappled shade and was born to eternal life.
Gordy served in the Army in World War II as a member of Gen. Patton's 8th Army Corps, participating in the Invasion of Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, and as a guard at the Nuremberg Trials. In 1950 he joined the Air Force and was part of the 75th Air Depot Wing (supply) as a Staff Sergeant based in Texas and Japan supporting actions in South Korea.
In 1952 Gordy married Kathleen Klug. After leaving the service, Gordy and Kathleen settled in Neenah where they lived quietly and raised two daughters, Mary Ann and Annette. Gordy was a member of St. Gabriel Parish and volunteered frequently as an usher, greeter, and rummage sale advisor for the parish.
Gordon is survived by daughters: Mary Ann Brittnacher and Annette (Eric) Hass; 3 grandchildren: Gabrielle, Anna, and Madeline Hass; a sister: Marge Kappell; a sister-in-law: Dot Brittnacher and many other relatives and friends.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers: Don (Lucille) and Mel; and a brother-in-law: John Kappell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., on Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger St., Neenah, with Fr. Richard Allen officiating. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be Wednesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Vernon Konkle, 80, of Freedom, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2016 following a 5 year battle with cancer. Vernon was born on April 29, 1936 in Oneida to Joseph and Berdina (Smith) Konkle. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 6 years, with six months active duty at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Vernon married Phyllis Green on September 9, 1961 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom.
Vernon graduated from St. Norbert High School in DePere and earned an Associate Degree from St. Lawrence Seminary, Mount Calvary, WI. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for 40 years at MRK Construction in Seymour and Freedom, later known as MCC, Appleton.
After retirement, Vernon volunteered at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and was a Eucharistic Minister for 20 years. Vernon and Phyllis also served Mass for many funerals. He was Sacristan for 4:00 Mass on Saturday for over 10 years. Vernon had a special place in his heart for the Mass servers at the 4:00 Mass. He always told them he would be close by if they needed help.
Vernon was well known in the neighborhood for walking his Golden Retrievers every morning in all kinds of weather. He was a very patient man, especially with puppies. If they destroyed something, he would either fix it or replace it.
Vernon and Phyllis traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland, Germany and the beautiful country of Austria. The mountains were his favorite.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Phyllis, a daughter, Dr. Darlene Konkle and spouse Wayne Lembke, Madison; a sister and brother-in-law, Viola (Roy) Rickert, Appleton; a sister-in-law, Joyce Konkle, Green Bay and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Phyllis's family; Paul and Pearl Green and Sharon and Carl Van Asten, and by his faithful dog, Sam.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Yvonne Konkle; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norbert and Geneva Green, a brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Bev Konkle, a brother, Urban Konkle, a sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Vernon "Shorty" Gerritts.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, W2037 County Road S, Freedom, with Fr. Walter Stump officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
Phyllis and Darlene would like to thank Fr. Walter, Deacon Don Newhouse and Deacon Gary Vanness for their visits. They would also like to thank Dr. Goggins, Dr. Conkright, Sara Meiers and all the staff and wonderful volunteers at Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, the 4th floor Oncology staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Heartland Hospice. Wayne W. Starnitcky, 43, of Route 3, Plymouth (Town of Rhine), died of an apparent heart attack at his home Wednesday.
He was born June 10, 1935, in Chicago, a son of Mrs. Helen Romanesko Starnitcky and the late Walter Starnitcky. He attended Chicago schools.
On Oct. 3, 1959, he married Eileen Ditter at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, Armstrong (Fond du Lac County).
He served in the US Navy during the Korean War from 1952 to 1956. After their marriage the couple lived in the Town of Forest (Fond du Lac County) for four years. They lived in Glenbeulah for 10 years, before moving to the Town of Rhine five years ago.
He was employed at the Kohler Co. for the past 17 years.
He was a member of St. Fridolin Catholic Church, Glenbeulah and the Walter Gilles American Legion Post No. 484 of Glenbeulah.
Survivors are his wife; two sons; a daughter; his mother and two sisters (names omitted for privacy).
A funeral mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Fridolin church by Rev. Cletus Kaiser, pastor, preceded by family rites at Wittkopp Funeral Home, Plymouth, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Glenbeulah.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Friday and until the time of services Saturday. A parish vigil will be held there at 8 p.m. Friday. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Walter Gilles post

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009, at St. Nicholas Church, W2037 Cty. Rd. S, Freedom, with the Rev. Dave Hoffman officiating and Deacon Don Newhouse concelebrating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 2 p.m. Monday until the time of the mass.

Obituary:
Luke G. Romenesko, Freedom, age 23, died unexpectedly on Saturday, August 1, 2009, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born February 8, 1986, to Stephen Romenesko and Kathleen (Lamers) Romenesko. Luke was a graduate of Freedom High School Class of 2004 and NWTC in 2005. He was currently employed by Team Industries as a welder. Luke started driving tractor at a young age and never stopped. He grew up on a family dairy farm and his sisters remember how his tractor driving skills got him out of many milking chores. Recently, cutting his 13 acre lawn was his way to keep driving. While Luke worked hard all week, he enjoyed his weekends to the fullest with friends and family. He could be found snowmobiling, four-wheeling or just hanging out. Uncle Luke also enjoyed reading and laughing with his nieces. Luke never missed dinner at mom's on Mondays. Proudly, but humbly he fulfilled one of his dreams by recently purchasing his own home.
He will be sadly missed by his parents: Steve and Kathy Romenesko, Freedom; three sisters: Leann (Craig) Vosters, Freedom; Jeneen Romenesko, Denver, CO; Andrea Romenesko, St. Paul, MN. He is further survived by three nieces: Maya, Aliana, and Samantha Vosters; his maternal grandmother: Helen Lamers; paternal grandparents: Eunice and Robert Romenesko, and numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Paul Lamers.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday August 5, 2009, at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Freedom with Fr. Dave Hoffman officiating. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a parish prayer service at 7:30 pm concluding the evening at Boettcher Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna and again on Wednesday directly at Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in his name. 920-766-2099.
