    Obituary:
SINSINAWA, Wis. - Dominican Sister Glenna Carroll spent the last 15 years of her life serving the poor in the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.
On Sept. 21, Sister Glenna died at Southwest Health Center in Platteville, Wis., near the motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa where she had retired earlier this year. She was 75.
A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Sept. 27 at the motherhouse with burial in the motherhouse cemetery.
From 1991 until her retirement, Sister Glenna helped scores of elderly and poor homeowners keep their homes in repair. In doing so, she reestablished the presence of the Sinsinawa Dominicans in Kansas City, a presence that dates back to their service at the former Holy Name School in the 19th century.
With a grant from her Dominican community for living expenses, Sister Glenna spent her first year in Kansas City working with the Mercy Housing Association in Kansas City on minor, but vital, repairs to the homes of people who could not afford to have the work done.
After gaining that experience, she founded Helpful Hands, an agency that raised money and coordinated volunteers to repair homes primarily in Kansas City's Blue Hills neighborhood surrounding St. Therese Little Flower Parish.
No stranger to hard labor, Sister Glenna was a fixture at job sites, hammer, saw or paint brush in hand.
In a 1998 interview with The Catholic Key, Sister Glenna said that in 1989 she saw a television documentary about a faith-based home repair ministry in Florida. She particularly noticed the faces of the people who were receiving assistance.
"You could see that they had a whole new attitude about life because someone cared for them," Sister Glenna said. "I snapped my fingers and said, 'That is my next ministry.'"
Soon, she was off to Appalachia to help other religious sisters in an established home repair program.
"I loved it," she told The Catholic Key. "I always loved working with my hands. I could hammer and I could saw, and I was always the one fixing things up around the house" while growing up, she said.
"Helpful Hands is about allowing people to live in dignity in their own homes," Sister Glenna said.
Sister Glenna was born June 15, 1931, in Appleton, Wis., the daughter of C.M. Glenn and Dorothy (Milhaupt) Carroll. Her parents and two sisters, Patricia Darnieder and Dominican Sister Marie Bernadette Carroll, preceded her in death.
She made her first profession of vows with the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, Wis., on Aug. 5, 1955, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1958.
For the first 20 years of her service as a woman religions, Sister Glenna was an elementary and high school teacher, serving Catholic schools in Montana, Illinois, Wisconsin and New York.
She also served as head of a food pantry in Schiller Park, Ill., and worked with J.S. Paulich Worship Publishers in Chicago.
Sister Glenna is survived by two sisters, Sue Heinritz and Nancy Ralphs; one brother, Father Michael Carroll; nieces and nephews; and her Dominican sisters.
Memorials may be made to the Sinsinawa Dominicans, 585 County Road Z, Sinsinawa, WI, 53824-9701 or online at www.sinsinawa.org.
