    Margaret E. Haferbecker, 97, Appleton, passed away Oct. 1, 2010. She was born June 29, 1913, in Shawano, Wis., to the late Leo and Ethel (Rupple) Sweet. The family moved to Medina in 1917. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1932 and worked for F. W. Woolworth.
    On April 17, 1937, she married Ralph E. Haas and they had two daughters. They lived in the Town of Greenville, until he passed away in 1947. She moved to Medina and worked for Outagamie County Farm Bureau and H. C. Prange Co.
    On Feb. 23, 1974, she married Melvin Haferbecker and for 30 years they enjoyed many trips and family gatherings. They lived in Grand Chute until 1997, when they moved into Appleton. Melvin passed away in 2004. Margaret belonged to Outagamie Homemakers for many years and volunteered at the Appleton Medical Center Auxiliary and at the American Cancer Society for 20 years. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Dale.
    Survivors include a daughter, Joan (John) Schauer, Houston, Texas. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Barbara (Avery) Geiger, Fond du Lac; Steve Sommer, Fremont; Kent (Jennifer) Sommer, New London; Barry (Bambi) Sommer, Racine; Marty Sommer, Shanghai, China; Renee (Sherman) Morris, Germantown, Tenn.; Kristen (Brian) Klas, Austin, Texas; and ten great-grandchildren.
    She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marlene (Duane) Sommer; and her sister, Helen Sweet.
    A Memorial Service for Margaret will be held at 12 (Noon) Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Zion United Church of Christ in Dale, with the Rev. Jim Deckert officiating. Interment will take place in Medina Cemetery. Friends may visit the family from 11 a.m. Saturday at church until the time of services, followed by lunch.
    A special thanks to her caregivers at Fox Valley Assisted Living and Memory Care and especially to Barbara Geiger who was a wonderful assistance in Margaret's last years.

    Obituary:
    Marlene E. Sommer, age 72, of Dale, passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2010, at Cherry Meadows in Appleton. She was born on June 28, 1938 in Dale, daughter of Ralph and Margaret (Sweet) Haas. On July 20, 1957, she married Duane Sommer in Dale, he preceded her in death in 1992. Marlene and Duane farmed in the Town of Dale most of their life. She was very devoted to her family and the farm. She enjoyed traveling with friends, country music and snowmobiling. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Dale.
    She is survived by her children: Barbara (Avery) Geiger, Fond du lac; Steve Sommer, Dale; Marty Sommer, Dale; Kent (Jennifer) Sommer, New London; Barry (Bambi) Sommer, Racine; eight grandchildren: Beth Geiger, Kurt (Allison) Geiger, Katie (Tony) Herres, Dustin Sommer, Emily Sommer, Logan Sommer, Madison and Evan Sommer; her mother Margaret Haferbecker, Appleton; sister: Joan (Jack) Schauer, Houston, TX; two brothers-in-law: Adrian (Nila) Sommer and Clair Sommer. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and a special friend Gerald Krenke.
    She was preceded in death by her father Ralph Haas, her husband Duane "Pee Wee" Sommer, stepfather Melvin Haferbecker and her dog Daisy.
    The funeral service for Marlene will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Dale with Rev. James Deckert officiating. Burial will be in Dale Union Cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service.
    In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Zion United Church of Christ, (PO Box 165, Dale WI 54931).
