    Los Angeles Herald, Los Angeles, CA, Wednesday Morning, 11 January 1906, pg 6 - HER BODY WILL LIE IN STATE - MANY WILL PAY TRIBUTE TO NOTED WOMAN - Funeral of Mrs. Kate Tupper Galpin Will Be Attended by Club Women of Southern California - The body of Mrs. Kate Tupper Galpin, prominent educator and much beloved teacher of Shakespeare, who died early yesterday morning after a serious operation, will lie in state in the Shakespeare room of Cumnock hall Friday, from 11 o'clock to 2:30 o'clock. In the same room in which, since the hall was built several years ago, she has been the center of a group of ardent Shakespeare students her friends will pay their last respects. From the Shakespeare room to the auditorium the body will be removed at 2:30 o'clock, where services will be held. The hundred members of the Galpin Shakespeare club will attend in a body, and representatives of many other clubs and Shakespeare classes will also be present. Mrs. Galpin was a member of a brilliant family. Her sisters, Mrs. Margaret Tupper True, a member of the Denver school board, and Mrs. Mila Tupper Maynard. editorial writer for the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Times, arrived in Los Angeles yesterday in response to a telegram announcing the dangerous illness of Mrs. Galpin. Another sister, Rev. Eliza Tupper Wllkes, occupies a position in educational circles of Los Angeles second only to that held by Mrs. Galpin. Her husband. Cromwell Galpin, has achieved success as a. writer, and her one daughter, Ellen, bids fair to follow in her mother's footsteps. Mrs. Galpln's three step-children, whom she has educated, all occupy enviable positions. Miss Lloy Galpin was chosen by the Los Angeles chamber of commerce to represent Los Angeles county at the Portland exposition, and during the fair her lectures were among the most interesting given. She is now a teacher in the Los Angeles high school. As an artist of much talent Alfred Galpin is achieving note in the northwest. The other daughter, Mrs. John Lowe, who was Miss Hazel Galpin, is also known for her cleverness. Mrs. Galpin was ever proud of her step-children and her efforts in educating them have been untiring. Mrs. Galpin was born in southeastern Iowa, a daughter of pioneers. Her mother was Ellen Tupper of bee fame. Mrs. Galpin graduated from the Iowa state agricultural college at the age of 17 and at once began teaching. She was the principal of several high and academic schools and the founder and first president of the original normal school of the state university of Nevada. Ben Greet indirectly paid her a high compliment in speaking in Denver. Mr. Greet declared that no place in the world has developed such a Shakespeare interest in Los Angeles. The lecture which he gave before a crowded house in Los Angeles he declared he could not give anywhere in the world except in university circles.
