Eugene J. ‘Gene' Leis;BANGOR, Wis. — Eugene Joseph Leis, 86, of rural Bangor died peacefully, su rrounded by his loving family on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at the Mulder Heal th Care Facility in West Salem, Wis. He was born April 14, 1917, in Pine H ollow to Henry and Catherine (Seitz) Leis.Eugene was baptized and confirmed at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Churc h, Pine Hollow, where he also attended grade school.He was raised on a farm and had various other jobs until being drafted in to the U.S. Army in July 1941. Eugene did his basic training at Camp Gran t, Ill. He then served in the United States Medical Corps at Dutch Harbo r, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, where he became a practicing pharmacist.While on leave, Eugene married Luella Burbach on April 26, 1944, at St. Pe ter's Catholic Church in Middle Ridge, Wis.After being honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1945, he w as employed at G. Heilman Brewery, the Tomah V.A. Hospital and the La Cros se County Highway Department.In 1950, Eugene and Luella bought a dairy farm in Middle Ridge and work ed hard together for the next 30 years. They were members of the Middle Ri dge Cheese Factory and also the Mid-Port Cheese Factory during that time.Besides farming, Eugene worked installing barn equipment, did masonry a nd concrete work for more than20 years and also was an excellent carpenter .Being a veteran of World War II, he was an active member of the Bangor Ame rican Legion Post No. 40 and the Bangor Clements-Anderson-Leis V.F.W. Po st No. 8278. He was also a longtime member of the Bohemian Valley Sportsm an Club.For enjoyment, he frequently attended the stock car races, horse and tract or pulls in the surrounding area and was a big fan of the Milwaukee Brewe rs and the Green Bay Packers. Since retiring in 1980, Eugene and Luella tr aveled to many different states on bus tours, and also made a return tr ip to Florida, where they had spent their honeymoon.In addition to Luella, his wife of almost 60 years, he is survived by thr ee daughters: Virginia (Roy) Franz of Madison, Wis., Carol (Stanley) Cleme nts of La Crosse and Marcia (Cal) Pickering of Tomah, Wis.; two sons, Jero ld (Karen Jandt) Leis of Rockland, Wis., and Leo (Ruth Schmaltz) Leis of M iddle Ridge; seven granddaughters: Kristi (Tim) Hermanson, Maria Clement s, Melissa Leis and fiancé Robert Gollnik Jr., Bobbi Jo and Alison Pickeri ng, and Katie and Jennifer Leis; 10 grandsons, Kevin Franz, Christopher (W endy), Andrew (Heidi), Eugene (Leslie), Timothy, Adam and Nathan Clement s, Chad (Shannon) Leis, Tyler Pickering and Tony Leis; 13 great-grandchild ren, Jared and Savannah Hermanson, Audra, Sofia, Sydney, and Ella Clement s, Andrew II, Alissa, Anna and Aubrey Clements, Lilyan Clements, and Bren na and Nolan Leis; two sisters, Cecelia and Elaine Leis, both of Sparta; a nd two brothers, Floyd (Harriet) Leis of Cashton and Joe (Ardella) Le is of Portland.He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine in 1938; his father, Hen ry, in 1966; a son, John, killed in Vietnam in 1971; a grandson, Brent Cle ments, in 1989; and a great-granddaughter, Carli Clements in 1995.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at 11 a. m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Middle Ridge. Father Robert Altman wi ll officiate and Father Robert Hundt will concelebrate. Burial will foll ow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Bangor Clements-Ande rson-Leis V.F.W. Post 8278. Relatives and friends are invited for visitati on on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Chu rch. LeisSparta, Wis. - Cecelia Mary Leis, 86, of Sparta passed away Thursday, De c. 9, 2004, at Franciscan Skemp Nursing Home in Sparta.She was born in Pine Hollow, rural Cashton, Wis., on Sept. 6, 1918, to Hen ry and Kathryn (Seitz) Leis. She was baptized and confirmed at Ss. Peter a nd Paul Catholic Church in Pine Hollow, as well as being educated in the p arish school.Cel was raised on a farm in the Pine Hollow area. She was 20 years old a nd working in La Crosse when her mother died suddenly of pneumonia. She mo ved back home on the farm to keep house for her father and cared for her y ounger brothers and sister. When her youngest brother married, she mov ed to Cashton with her father and worked as a telephone switchboard operat or for 10 years. She then worked 15 years in Sparta as a phone operator, u ntil the Sparta office went to direct dial, at which time she retired. S he thoroughly enjoyed her time as phone operator. Cel was a loyal Chica go Cubs baseball fan from her childhood until the time of her death.Cel is survived by one sister, Elaine Leis of Sparta; two brothers, Flo yd (Harriet) Leis of Cashton and Joseph (Ardella) Leis of Cashton; one sis ter-in-law, Louella Leis of Middle Ridge, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews a nd friends.She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathryn in 1938; and father, Hen ry in 1966; one brother, Eugene Leis; and a nephew, John, who was kill ed in Vietnam in 1971.A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at S t. See Image Floyd G. Leis, 86, of Cashton, WI, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2008 at the hospital in Platteville, WI. Floyd was born on August 8, 1922 to Henry and Kathryn (Seitz) Leis, in Monroe County, WI. He attended the Pine Hollow School until 8^th grade and then began working with his father on the farm and hauling milk. Floyd served in the Navy during WWII and earned the American Area Campaign Medal along with a Victory Medal. On December 13, 1947 Floyd was united in Holy Matrimony to Harriet Lord at the Pine Hollow Church. Floyd worked a variety of jobs in the area, he hauled oil with Hugh Bacon, worked with heavy equipment and driving truck for Ed Kramers and Sons, worked at the Creamery in Cashton, Fort McCoy, and the whey plant in Viroqua, WI. When he was not at work, Floyd was a volunteer on the Cashton Fire Department and Lion's Club, and also a member of the American Legion in Ontario. In his younger years he loved racing model T cars, hunting and fishing, later he enjoyed bowling and playing cards. Floyd is survived by his wife of 60 years, Harriet (Lord) Leis; son Douglas (Penny) Leis of Moorcroft, WY; daughters, Kathryn (Edward) Marx of Cashton, WI, Mary Kay Leis of Sparta, WI, Jennifer (Randy) Brueggen of Norwalk, WI; a brother, Joseph (Ardella) Leis of Cashton, WI; a sister, Elaine Leis of Sparta, WI; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Eugene and a sister Cecelia Leis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 22, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cashton, WI. Father K. Amalados will officiate. Burial with full military honors by the Ontario American Legion will follow in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Pine Hollow. BANGOR - Nolan Henry James Leis, 10, of Bangor leapt into the arms of the Lord surrounded by his loving family Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, following a long battle with Batten disease.
Nolan was born May 24, 2003, in La Crosse, to Chad and Shannon (Thompson) Leis. He was a blessing, with chocolate brown eyes and curly brown hair. Nolan attended West Salem Elementary School until April of 2012, when his illness made it too difficult to continue. He cherished the memories of his fellow classmates from the Class of 2021, especially his best buddy, Gavin, his special teachers, Miss Rhea and Shelly Blaken, and his bus driver, Diane. Nolan's first word was "ball" for good reason. He loved any sport or activity involving a ball. Especially shooting hoops, playing catch and hitting balls off his tee. He loved cheering for his favorite team, the Green Bay Packers, and Brett Favre. He loved long summer days playing on his Slip-n-Slide, walking to the park, and anything involving his best friend and big sister, Brenna "Sissy." They shared a special bond and had many adventures in the tree house, on the Barbie Jeep and playing "Titanic."
Nolan lived life to the fullest in a short amount of time. He was very rambunctious and feared nothing. He would climb as high as he could, often leaving snacks and sippy cups behind. Sitting still was not an option, he was dubbed our "little dragonfly." As Nolan's illness progressed, he was no longer able to do the things that brought him such happiness. Instead, he settled for long car rides to Riverside Park, listening to Tom Petty, Motley Crue and R.E.M., all the while looking forward to the stop at McDonald's for cheeseburgers. Relaxing in his recliner, snuggling with "Mum," cuddling with "Mama Bella," listening to Sissy sing her special "Nonan" song and listening to pregame shows on Sundays with Dad were some of his favorite activities in recent years.
Nolan will be sadly missed by his parents; sister, Brenna, at home; special pets, Chevelle, Miley and Mama Bella; nanas and papas, Jerry and Karen Leis of Rockland, Jim and Jill Thompson of Trempealeau, and "Jampa" Harry Beal of Bangor; great-grandma, Joan Thompson of Wonewoc, Wis.; special auntie and unkie, Melissa and Bob Gollnik of Minneapolis; auntie and uncles, Dawn and Randy Thompson of Trempealeau, and Mike Thompson of Winona, Minn.; and very special cousins, Wilson and Levi Gollnik, and Billy Thompson.
Nolan was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Eugene and Luella Leis, Herbert Jandt and "Jamma" Delores Beal, Bill and Mary Moore, and Verne Thompson; and his very special kitty, Molly.
A Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 303 16th Ave. S., Bangor. Monsignor Robert Hundt will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of Mass on Saturday at the church. In honor of Nolan's love of the Green Bay Packers, we ask that attire representing the team of your choice be worn at the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
