Manila Gipp, R.N. - LAURIUM ? Manila Gipp, R.N., 103, a resident of Laurium and lifelong registered nurse, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at Bayside Village in L?Anse where she had been residing for the past two years.
She was born on July 22, 1902, in Wolverine, a daughter of the late Charles and Pauline (Effinger) Noetzel.
Manila attended the public school of District #2 and graduated from Calumet High School with the Class of 1921. She graduated from the School of Nursing of Blodgatt Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich. and in June of 1924, she returned to Calumet.
In September of 1924, she accepted a position at Calumet Public Hospital to instruct the Probation Class of Nurses. At the end of three months, she became the surgical supervisor. In 1926, she became the superintendent of Calumet Public Hospital. She also continued to instruct nurses.
She left her position on May 1, 1934 and on June 13, 1934, she was united in marriage to Gilbert Gipp at St. Paul?s Evangelical Lutheran Church. A son, Karl, was born in May, 1937.
Mrs. Gipp temporarily left the field of nursing until 1944, when at the invitation of the ten Board of Directors of the hospital, she resumed her duties as superintendent of the hospital.
During her tenure, many improvements were made at the hospital; an addition was built on the 2nd floor, an OB suite on the 1st floor and expansions of the laboratory and surgical suites. In 1964, a 36 bed addition was added, increasing the bed capacity to 80.
In 1967, the hospital received accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.
Manila retired on May 9, 1968, having served the hospital for 33 years. She was active in numerous organizations during her lifetime, president of the Houghton District of Nurses? Association, president of the Hospital Auxiliary, president of the Upper Peninsula Council of Hospitals and president of the Calumet Women?s Ingot Club. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in Laurium and served as a past trustee and council member.
Surviving are a son, Karl (Barbara) Gipp of Skanee; four grandchildren, Stephen (Loren) Gipp, Julie (Mark) Bogden, Thomas Gipp, Karla (Darryl) Shann; two step-grandchildren, Julie (Terry) Kuklinski, Susan (Thomas) Ziebell; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in Laurium with Rev. James Fundum to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet on Monday, April 3, 2006, from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Tuesday or at www.ericksoncrowley.com.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to St. Paul?s Lutheran Church, Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center or the Bayside Village Nursing Home.
