    Biography:
    E. J. FEMAL - Benjamin Disraeli, noted prime minister of England in the 19th century, said: "The secret of success is constancy to purpose." E. J. Femal, founder of the Fox River Boiler Works, apparently knew the secret, and held on to his dreams and ambitions throughout all kinds of obstacles to reach success.
Mr. Femal was born in Kaukauna in 1892.
His family moved to Appleton a year later, where he attended St. Mary's grade school. He then went to what was to be the beginnings of the State Teachers College then, telegraphy school in Oshkosh.
He began in the business world in Detroit by meeting two giants in American history and industry. He upholstered cars for none other than Henry Ford, who, in the course of his work, introduced Mr. Femal to John D. Rockefeller. But, upholstering cars, even for such illustrious persons, was a long way from E. J. Femal's prime ambition'97to own and manage his own company.
Soon, he became a line man for a Racine Power Company. Then, in 1918, he began work for the old Northern Boiler Works in Appleton.
In the meantime, Mr. Femal had married the former Gertrude Esler of Kaukauna in 1914, and they had started their family. With a wife and children to support, E. J. Femal still did not lose sight of his goals. While working for Northern Boiler Works, he studied nights to gain his engineering degree by correspondence from the University of Wisconsin.
Seven years after coming back to Appleton, having worked his way to an engineering diploma, E. J. Femal realized a life long ambition. He founded his own company, the Fox River Boiler Works, in 1925. The firm manufactures and distributes boilers as well as doing boiler repairs. Today, still a growing concern, it is also involved with structural steel fabrications.
    E. J. Femal was a part of Appleton's growth in civic affairs as well as in industry. Interested in good government for the expanding community, he served several terms on the City Council. He is a member of Appleton Rotary Club and is a charter member of the Elks Club.
Today, semi-retired at 72, E. J. Femal still visits the office daily when in Appleton. His winter months arc largely spent in Florida.
Life long members of St. Mary's parish, the E. J. Femals had five children: James, Robert, Frances, Carole (Mrs. Richard E. White), and Russell. Robert died when four years old.
This year 1964 will mark Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Femal's golden wedding anniversary. Certainly, they will reminisce over the 50 years past, and feel the glow of a job well done, both in the business Mr. Femal built, and in the family they raised. Perhaps, too, they would agree at least in part with Disraeli's statement: "The secret of success is constancy to purpose," for perseverance and a dauntless spirit to move forward can certainly be seen in the success story of E. J. Femal.
