2004 Catholic Diocese of LaCrosse; Jay: I was going to mail a letter to yo u, then noted your e-mail address.The oldest records in the La Crosse area were those of St. Mary's in La Cr osse -- the marriage records there begin in 1860. At that time the enti re surrounding area, including the Ridges, was taken care of from ther e. I checked both the marriage and baptism records from 1860-1870 ent ry by entry, and there is no record of the marriage, or the baptisms of t he 4 children you listed. I also checked the early 1st Communion and Conf irmation lists and they did not appear there either.I also checked the records of Mauston, Keyesville and Rising Sun since th ey are not too far distant from St. Mary's Ridge, and their records beg in in the 1860's, but there were no Wilpolt entries in any of them either.In most cases the early records do not indicate the cause of death. I sup pose one would have to research some of the area civil histories to s ee if there would be any references to some periodic widespread disease.I've pretty well exhausted the various possibilities, but if there is a ny further avenue I can think of that produces anything, I will let you kn ow. Bernard Wilpolt, 83, 611 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, died early this morning at his home after an illness of two months. He was born Feb. 15, 1864 in Sparta and operated a farm before his retirement 17 years ago. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Leo Berres and Mrs. Edward Flynn, both of Kenosha; and Mrs. Michael Faust, Kaukauna; three sons, Harry, Wisconsin Rapids; Alban and Norbert, Kenosha; one brother, Henry of Menasha; two half brothers, Theodore Mickie, Wrightstown and Herman Mickie, St. Cloud, Minn.; three sisters, Mrs. Peter Rademacher, Kaukauna; Mrs. Joseph Peters, Rudolph and Mrs. Martin Peters, Portland, Ore., 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 Saturday morning at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna, with the Rev. Andrew Quella in charge. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Ex-Menasha Fireman Dies - Henry J. Wilpolt Had Served With Volunteers 37 Years Menasha -
Henry J. Wilpolt, 84, 26 Main St. a member of Menasha's volunteer fire department for 37 years, died at 2:30 Sunday afternoon after being in poor health for a year. He was born July 28, 1872, in Sparta and h ad lived in Menasha for 55 years, coming from Kaukauna.He had been employed at the Menasha Wooden Ware for 50 years before retiring. He retired from volunteer fire service in 1941 when the paid department was established although he served as vacation relief fireman during the war years. He was a member of the Eagles, Catholic Order of Foresters and of Holy Name Society of St. Mary's Church. Funeral services will be he ld at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Kaukauna. Friends may call at the Laemmrich Funeral Home after 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and the rosary will be said there at 7 o'clock, 7:30 and 8:30 Tuesday night.Survivors are the widow; a half brother Ted Micke, Clouquet, MN. and two half sisters, Mrs. Elisabeth Peters, Rudolph, and Mrs. Gertrude Peters, Portland, Oregon

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilpolt of Kaukauna were listening to a National Broadcasting radio program Tuesday evening during which $1,000 is given away each week by telephone. When the time came for the awarding the money, Mrs. Wilpolt remarked that "anyone in the United States can win." Just then the telephone rang and she answered it. The voice on the other end was from New York and from the radio program and was informed that they had won $2,800 and the money would be sent to the western union office in Appleton. (Nov. 8, 1939)

Henry Wilpolt retired after 51 years with the C. & N. W. Railroad. Wilpolt came to Kaukauna with his parents when he was a young boy. His father died when he was twelve and at thirteen, to support his mother and four younger brothers and sisters, he started work at the Combined Locks Pulp mill. There were two shifts 10-hour days and 14-hour nights. The wages were 50c a day for either shift. After five years of mill work Henry decided to work for the railroad. He started in 1908 at 20c per hour.

He was born M ay 7, 1887 in Marinette and lived in Hollandtown for a short time and h ad been a Kaukauna resident for about 60 years. Mr. Wilpolt had lived in K imberly and Manitowoc the past few years. He completed 50 years of servi ce with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and was a lifetime honoray m ember of the Brotherhood Locomotive Engineers, a life member of the Kaukau na Elks Lodge No. 962, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Kimberly G olden Age Club. Description: Great White Fleet- When the Atlantic Fleet sailed from Hampton Roads, VA on 16 December 1907, it was a worldwide goodwill mission by President Theodore Roosevelt. The fleet consisted of sixteen new battleships painted white, with gilded scrollwork on their bows, six destroyers, and several auxiliary ships. This was likely the last large fleet to sail around the Horn before the completion of the Panama Canal in 1914.This database lists the names of the men who were on those ships as they sailed in review past President Roosevelt on that December day in 1907. On 16 December 1907 the USS Ohio passed from Hampton Roads, Virginia, in review before President Theodore Roosevelt attached to the 3rd Division under the command of Captain Charles W. Bartlett. Ohio was one of 16 Battleships participating in an unprecidented world cruise, today commonly referred to as the "Great White Fleet" because the ships were painted in peacetime "white" and "spar."Commanded by Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans, and later, Rear Admiral Charles S. Sperry, the feet made calls on the east and west coasts of South America, rounding the Horn in between, en route to San Francisco.By the time of the fleets departure from San Francisco for Puget Sound, command of Ohio had been transferred to Captain Thomas B. Howard.On 7 July 1908, Ohio and her sisters shaped their course west to Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia. On each visit, the American ships were welcomed with great enthusiasm, but none of their ports of call received them with such enthusiastic friendliness as Tokyo where they anchored 18 October. The fleet's presence in Japan symbolized both American friendship and strength and helped to ease dangerously strained relations between the two countries.The fleet put in at Amoy, returned to Yokohama held target practice in the Philippines, and was homeward-bound 1 December. After steaming through the Suez Canal 4 January 1909, the fleet made Mediterranean calls, before anchoring in Hampton Roads 22 February.

Albert Wilpolt, seaman, who enlisted in the navel service 4/23/1907 to serve 3 years came home Saturday from New York to visit his mother Mrs Sarah Wilpolt of the south side. Seaman Wilpolt has the distinction of serving on the battleship Ohio, the flagship of Admiral Robley D. Evans, who with his fleet of 16 battleships and more than that in number of coaling ships is to sail from Hampton Roads, VA December 15th for San Francisco, by way of the straights of Magellan, a trip of neary 14,000 miles. This great fleet about 50 ships will compose the greatest navel movement in the worlds history and the position held by Seaman Wilpolt was eagerly sought for by every Jacky in Uncle Sam's service. Young Wilpolt is a straight built vigorous young man who in his natty sailor togs makes a fine appearance. He will spend a month visiting his mother and his friends in the city after which he will join is commrades on board ship and commence getting everything in readiness for sailing on this great voyage.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus ladies. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Alex (Ruth) Schoening, of Chicago, Illinois; two sons: Clyde, of Appleton and Floyd, of Kaukauna; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, in 1960, and a daughter and son-in-law Bernard and Sally Lill. The funeral be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna with Father Mike Hoffman and Robert Kabat officiating. Internment will be in the parish cemetery.

The First World War, fought between 1914 and 1918, was the first of the gr eat world-wide conflicts of the twentieth century, pitting the 'Central Po wers' of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and smaller allies against the ' Entente,' notably the British Empire, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, the Un ited States, and their allies.Shortly after the British declaration of war in August 1914, Canada offer ed an initial contingent of 25,000 for service overseas. A second continge nt was offered in the autumn of 1914. The 1st Canadian Division was form ed from units of the first contingent in January 1915, and was fighti ng in France the following month. In September 1915, the Canadian Corps w as formed, incorporating the 1st and 2nd Canadian Divisions, and the Canad ian Cavalry Brigade. Further contingents and reinforcement drafts continu ed to be sent overseas. At the time of the Armistice in November 1918, t he Canadian Corps had expanded to include four infantry divisions and cor ps units. Other Canadian units, including some artillery batteries, engine ering companies, and railway and forestry troops, served directly under Br itish command in France and Belgium. Still other units, responsible for ad ministrative support, training, forestry and medical care, served in Engla nd. The Canadian Expeditionary Force, as the army raised during the Fir st World War was designated, grew in the course of the conflict to 619,63 6, of whom 424,589 served in Europe.The Ministry of Militia and Defence (whose records are described by the Na tional Archives as Record Group [RG] 9), the predecessor of the Departme nt of National Defence today, was responsible for the recruitment, prelimi nary training and dispatch overseas of recruits for the CEF.The Ministry of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada (whose records a re described by the National Archives as RG 150) was created by an Order-i n-Council dated 28 October 1916 (P.C. 2651) to oversee the administrati on of the CEF. The Ministry functioned as the liaison between the Canadi an government and the British government, the War Office and British Gener al Headquarters. It had broad responsibility for all matters connected wi th the administration of the CEF. Whereas the CEF was placed under the con trol of the British military authorities for operational purposes, respons ibility for all other matters (including finance, logistics, training a nd reinforcement) fell to the Ministry of the Overseas Military Forc es of Canada.With the end of conflict in Europe, the repatriation of the CEF, and the f inal settlement of financial arrangements with the British, the Minist ry of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada ceased to exist on 8 June 19 20 (P.C. 1705, 26 July 1920). All records relating to the CEF were consoli dated in Ottawa within the Ministry of Militia and Defence.
Attestation Papers and Enlistment FormsVolunteers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force were questioned at the pla ce of enlistment to complete the Attestation papers which included the rec ruit's name and address, next-of-kin, date and place of birth, occupatio n, previous military service, and distinguishing physical characteristic s. Recruits were asked to sign their Attestation papers, indicating the ir willingness to serve overseas. By contrast, men who were drafted into t he CEF under the provisions of the Military Service Act (1917) complet ed a far simpler form which included their name, date of recruitment, a nd compliance with requirements for registration.This series consists of approximately 620,000 individual Attestation pape rs and Military Service Act Enlistment forms. They were completed in tripl icate at the time of enrolment in the CEF. At least one copy of the Attest ation papers or Enlistment form accompanied the CEF member overseas, whe re it was placed on the individual personnel file at the Ministry of the O verseas Military Forces of Canada in London.Paper originals of the Attestation papers and Enlistment forms are describ ed by the National Archives of Canada as RG 9, II B8, Vols. 1-1256. They m easure 72.9 metres in extent.

In World War II, ALL merchant ships and their crews were placed under mili tary control by virtue of the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, which designat ed them as "SHIPS OF WAR", and each merchant ship had a U.S. Navy Armed Gu ard Gun crew assigned to each to help defend the ship from the enemy.By the end on 1949, there were few jobs left for merchant seaman as many s hips were flying foreign flags as part of the U.S. government's Lend/Lea se program, since our allies had lost their merchant fleets during the wa r. leaving very few for American seamen to obtain jobs.During World War II, 1 out of 25 merchant seaman lost his life, this is wi th only about 250,000 serving as merchant seaman, but this doesn't cover t hose who received injuries that prevented them from returning to sea. On January19, 1988, those men who served on ocean-going merchant ships from December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945 were granted veteran status under Public Law 95-202.

Louis Wilpolt, 45, 807 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, died at 4 o'clock this morning at the Veterans' hospital at Wood, WI. after a 3 month illness. Born March 22, 1896, at Hollandtown, he was a member of the Kaukauna Fire Department since March 1934, and formerly was employed as a tinsmith for the Haas Hardware Company, Kaukauna and the Chicago and Northwestern railway. He was a service officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and past commander of the American Legion Post no. 41, at Kaukauna. He was wounded in service, overseas, having been a sergeant in Company H, 128th Infantry, 32nd Division. He was a member of the Wisconsin Paid Fireman's association and of the International Association of Firefighters.The body will arrive in Kaukauna at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon and will be taken to Greenwood funeral home. Survivors are two daughters, Miss Lorraine Wilpolt, Chicago and Miss Evelyn Wilpolt, Kaukauna and one son, Gene, Kaukauna; four brothers: Henry, Kaukauna, Albert, Minneapolis, John, New York City, and Richard, Hudson Falls, N.Y. and one sister, Mrs. Ed Bay, Kaukauna.

Richard B. Wilpolt, McCormi ck Home, Green BayAge 79, died Friday evening in Green Bay after a long illness. He was bo rn April 6, 1898 in the town of Holland. Mr. Wilpolt formerly worked for t he Union Bag Paper Company, Kaukauna then the Union Bag Paper Company Huds on Falls, New York. He was also employed by Thilmony Pulp and Paper, Kauka una. He retired in 1955 from The Fox Paper Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. Surv ivors include two daughters: Mrs. Riley (Carole) Solie, Appleton; and Mr s. Frank (Marge) Carey, Cincinnati; a brother, (Incorrect, he is a son) Gl en Wilpolt, Oakland, California, a sister Mrs Ann Bay, Kaukauna; and 11 gr andchildren. I do not find him at St. Mary Kaukauna or at St. John's in Antigo. Chances seem best that he died sometime soon after he was born at Hollandtown. Harry H. Wilpolt, 57, former Kaukauna resident, died about 6 o'clock this morning at Wisconsin Rapids, his home. Surviving are the widow; two daughters, The Misses Joann and Jean at home; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Flynn and Mrs. Leo Berres, Kenosha; and Mrs. Mike Faust, Kaukauna; and two brothers, Norbert and Alban Wilpolt, Kenosha. Wilpolt was born Sept. 12, 1893, in Kaukauna, where he was first employed by the Chicago and North Western railroad. He went more than 25 years ago to Wisconsin Rapids where he entered the restaurant business. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

She attended schools in Kaukauna and married Edward Flynn on Aug. 19, 1 919 in Kaukauna. She came to Kenosha in 1925 and was a homemaker. She w as a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and its Alter Society a nd a member of Kenosha Senior Citizens Club. Survivors are a son, Richa rd E. Flynn, Kenosha; two daughters, Leola Sharfinski and Rita Holm, bo th of Kenosha; 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, two great great g randchildren, twp step- great granchildren and three step - great great gr andchildren. WILPOLT FREED IN KIDNAPING CASE - Former Kaukauna Man Exonerated of Any Blame in Matter in East
Alban Wilpolt, Kenosha;- formerly of Kaukauna, was released early this week on suspicion of having been connected with, the kidnaping of the Lindbergh baby. Relatives at Kenosha received word from Wilpolt by long distance telephone from. "Washington, "D. C., where he went following his release. He said that police released him because they could find no evidence to connect him with the case, "Wilpolt was arrested with five other men in Norfolk and held when police found a notation. "Lindy" in. a booklet taken from one of the men- "Wilpolt was picked up at a hotel some time after the other men had been arrested. Police found a gun and some bullets in his room. It was said that he satisfactorily explained the presence of the gun and bullets arid that he had been exonerated, of any guilt in the kidnaping, The gun which police found, "Wilpolt explained, was a rifle designed for a hunting trip, in northern New York, which he was contemplating. The dum-dum bullets, he said were some he procured to take along on the hunting trip to "have some fun" -with his hunting companions.

1970 Died in Kenosha Wisconsin, December 19, 1970, the victim of an apparent robbery attempt (see newspaper articles) One newspaper article mentions he moved to Kenosha in 1921 and operated taverns and restaurants there since 1936. He was a veteran of World War I and served in the Panama Canal Zone. It mentions he is survived by two sisters Irene and Leona.

Obituary:
Kenosha tavern keeper dies of gunshot wound. A well-known Kenosha tavern keeper and nightclub operator w as found dead early this morning apparently from a gunshot wound to the he ad, according to Police Chief Robert Bosman. The body of Alban Wilpolt, 6 7, was found in the parking lot at the rear of his tavern at the corn er 56 Street and 22nd Avenue, police said. A fire department rescue squ ad was called after an unidentified party notified the police of the bo dy about 6:45 this morning. The Fire Department report noted the man h ad at least one bullet hole in his head. He may also have been beaten. P olice believe that robbery was the motive. Mr. Wilpolt operated Wilpolt Bamboo room, 5605 22nd Avenue, and resided above his establishment. Poli ce are conducting an intensive investigation to the circumstances regardi ng the tavern owner's death. A coroner's verdict was unavailable late th is morning. In June, 1969, Wilpolt's cabaret license was revoked by a Ci ty Council because a dancer had been convicted by a court on a charge s he had gone both bottomless and topless during a performance in April of 1 969. Every few months Wilpolt returned to City Council to ask that his li cense be reinstated. Finally in June of this year his Cabaret license w as restored. Reports indicate that he was trying to sell the tavern. Pol ice are unsure how much money, if any, Wilpolt had on his person at ti me of his death.
Wilpolt victim of abortive ho ldup effort.Kenosha police believe that Alban Wilpolt, 70, well known Tavern and night club operator found shot to death early Saturday, was the victim of an abo rtive holdup attempt. A police spokesman this morning confirmed Wilpolt 's empty wallet and tavern and car keys were found about three blocks fr om Wilpolt's Bamboo Room, 56 05 22nd Avenue, behind which his body was fou nd. Police officers Les Martin and Gerald Schuetz were sent to the re ar of the tavern about 6:37 a.m. Saturday, after police had received ca ll that a man was lying on the ground in the parking lot behind the taver n. They summoned the rescue squad. Fireman answering the call discover ed Wilpolt had been shot. Corner Harold Wagner, M.D., indicated Wilpo lt had died of gunshot wounds. He was shot once in the head and once in t he body with a 25 caliber automatic. As theorized by police, Wilpolt lock ed his tavern and left by the front door sometime around 1:30 a.m.. It 's suspected that a would-be robber or robbers waited for the elderly tave rn owner behind the building, where his car was parked. It is thought th at at least one gun gunman robbed Wilpolt of his keyes and wallet. The wa llet apparently contained only a dollar oe so. Apparently an attempt w as made to force the victim to open the rear door of the tavern. His glas ses were found between the storm door and the inner door. Police ha ve no idea whether Wilpolt was shot because he refused to open the door, b ecause he attempted to resist, or because he may recognize the robbers. A fter being shot his body was dragged a few feet, apparently in an attem pt to temporarily conceal it. Residents of the neighborhood did not he ar a shot, police said. The tavern was not entered, despite the fact t he holdup man had the keys in their possession. The only thing still miss ing, after discovery of the wallet and keys, is a small amount of money fr om Wilpolt's billfold. The intensive police investigation is continuing t oday. Wilpolt was born in Kaukauna, on May 25th, 1900, the son of the la te Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Wilpolt. He moved to Kenosha in 1921, and operat ed taverns and restaurants in this area since 1936. He was a veteran of W orld War I, and served in the Panama Canal zone. Surviving are two sister s, Mrs. Edward (Irene) Flynn, of Kenosha, and Mrs Leona Faust, of Kaukaun a. Two brothers and sister preceded him in death.

1990 The Kenosha News dated April 21, 1990 Unsolved murders linger. Twenty deaths between September 9th 1989 and January 1963 are listed as unsolved murders. Prior to 1963 it had been 15 years since a murder in Kenosha had gone unsolved.... December 19, 1970- The body of Alban Wilpolt, 70, found shot in the head outside his tavern, the Bamboo Room, may officially be ruled opened but the police believe a good suspect in the case was a Racine man convicted in the shooting of death of another Kenoshan outside a bar on 14th Avenue near 63rd Street in March 1971. Although the suspect never confessed to Wilpolt shooting, he was convicted in the other case and sentenced to Waupan for life, plus 15 years for the attempted armed robbery of his March victim.

See Image Mrs. Michael Faust - Leona E. Wilpolt, Formerly of the Golden Venture Apartments, Kaukauna, aged 84, died Wednesday, October 3, 1990 at St. Paul's Home. She was born October 14, 1905 in Hollandtown, daughter of the late Bernard and Albardine (Vandenberg) Wilpolt. She had been a cook at Kaukauna Community Hospital. She was an avid card player, member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Ladies of Holy Cross, Ladies of the Knights of Columbus. Survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law: Harold and Helen Faust, Port Townsend, Washington; Leo and Beverly Faust, Houston, Texas; Lois Faust, Rhinelander; three daughters and sons-in-law, Michaeline and Richard Steffens, Kaukauna; Helen and Fritz Diekvoss, Rhinelander; Joan and John Mau, Kaukauna; a sister, Irene Flynn, Kenosha. Preceded in death by her husband, Michael in 1956; a daughter, Sr. Leone (Roberta); a son, Neil Faust; three brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Jack Mullarkey officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna.
