Sponge Squad Gets 5 For Selling Liquor Three Pay $200 Fines and Two Are to be Tried Today - New Hiding Places Are Found for Moonshine. Three saloon keepers paid fines of $200 and costs when they appeared before Judge A. M. Spencer in municipal court Tuesday morning on a charge of having intoxicating liquor in their places of business and two are to be tried Tuesday afternoon on the same charge. Those who paid fines were Edward Mantz, Stephensvills, and Martin Verbeten and Theodore Jacobs of Kimberly. Trials of John and Vincent Forster, Maple Grove-st., and Jacob Miller, Kaukauna. still are pending. All five arrests were the result of raids in Outagamie Co. within the last few days by a group of federal and state prohibition officers, who confiscated liquor for evidence in each place. A pitcher of moonshine whisky behind the bar and a jug of the fluid in the back room ware found at the Mantz soft drink establishment, Stephensville, in a raid Monday afternoon At the Forster brothers' establishment, one man is said to have fled through the rear door as the officers entered at the front. He was followed and a pint of liquor was found beneath a stairway. A path was followed to the end of, the yard, where a jug containing more "moon" was discovered. This raid was conducted Monday morning. The visit to the Jacob Miller place of business on Wisconsin-ave, Kaukauna, Sunday evening revealed a pint bottle of moonshine concealed in the flushing tank of a toilet. In the two Kimberly raids, the officers confiscated several pop bottles filled with the strong brown fluid at the Verbaeten place and a pint bottle half filled and a 3-gallon jug partially filled at the Jacobs place.
