    Biography:
PATRICK McGLONE, who owns and operates a farm of 160 acres situated in section 24, Deer Creek township, is a native of County Mayo, Ireland, and was born in April, 1849, a son of Michael and Mary (Cunningham) McGlone, the former of whom died in the old country about 1869, while the latter came to America in 1873 and lived with her children until her death, July 11, 1902, at the age of eighty-two years. Patrick McGlone, who was the third of a family of ten children, came to America in 1870, locating at once in New London, Wisconsin, where he worked for wages for about three years and then bought the place on which he now resides, a wild tract to clear which he had only his ax. He first felled trees and built a small log house and barn, and one year later bought a pair of young steers which he broke to the yoke. As time passed by he added modern machinery to his outfit, and in 1895 he built his present residence and in 1902 a modern barn, 40x80 feet. He also built a number of outbuildings for the shelter of his stock and grain, and his property is all under the plow and finely fenced with barbed wire. He does general farming and stock raising, markets dairy products, hogs and cattle and keeps Poland China hogs and Percheron horses. Mr. McGlone was married in 1877 to Miss Ellen McMyler, daughter of Patrick and Mary (Jennings) McMyler, natives of Ireland, who lived and died in the old country. Mrs. McGlone was the seventh of a family of eleven children, and was born about 1853. Nine children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. McGlone: Michael, who lives at home; Mary Ann, who married William J. Conlon of Deer Creek township; Hannah, who married Matt McGinness of Deer Creek township; William, living at home; Patrick, of Deer Creek township; Edward, who died at the age of seventeen years; Francis, who resides at home; and two children who died in infancy. Mr. McGlone is a democrat in politics, and for two years served on the board of supervisors of Deer Creek township, as well as being a member of the school board for nine years. He and his family are members of the Catholic Church, and hold membership at Helena, a mission of St. Mary's Church at Welcome.

    News Mention:
Immigrant from "Ould Sod" Is Oldest Deer Creek Settler
    By W. F. Winsey
"There may be older men in the territory, but I am the oldest, living settler between Mosquito hill and Embarrass and Wolf Rivers. Patrick McClone, Deer Creek Township, Outagamie County told the writer.
Mr. McClone who was born in Castle Bar, Ireland in 1849, left his native land, when he had reached his majority, for America, because he had to shift for himself. Men in the stone quarries near his home were working for 25 cents a day and boarding themselves, and relatives in the town of Maple Creek were writing him about the opportunities in this country for young men to get work at good wages and to become independent.
As soon as McClone had decided to leave the Emerald Isle, he set sail at Londonderry and fifteen days later landed in New York. From there he made his way to New London by boat. The entire trip cost him $52 and he was worse than "broke" when he arrived at his destination, as debt stared him in the face.
    Started on Farm
As a starter in the country of his adoption, McClone worked four months for a farmer at $18 a month, then for the Green Bay & Western railway and finally for a lumber company.
As McClone belongs to that type of men who would rather be boss than to be bossed, and as he had decided to become a tiller of the soil, he bought the two "eighties" on which he has resided ever since the purchase, from Welcome Hyde. "For this land in the condition that God and nature left it," says McClone, " I paid $4 an acre.
"To reach the farm," said McClone, " I went from New London to Bear Creek by train and there hired a man in summer with a sled to move me and my outfit to Coffee bridge, at which point because there were no approaches to the bridge, I sent the team back and encamped for the night."
" Deer visited the camp in herds that night and were as tame as sheep and as curious as turkeys over the strange invasion of their territory.
    Used Sled in Marsh
I used the sled to get to the bridge because it would move over the intervening marshes and through ponds more easily than a wagon.
"In the morning, I found a boat and in this I loaded by outfit, crossed the Wolf River, and landed on the farm now owned by John Luebke.
"After reaching my land I found that four families had preceded me and settled near at hand. These were J.V. Turney, Alonzo Buck, Porter Bohen and Alfred Coffey. Not one of these men now is living.
"For four weeks while I was clearing a patch and preparing to build a log cabin, I put up with these neighbors. They helped me to roll the logs for the cabin into place and to put on the roof.
    Sold Timber
"As soon as I had a house to live in, I began chopping down trees, cutting them into saw logs, hauling them to the river and burning the brush and surplus logs. For the choicest basswood, I received $3 a thousand and $5 for the best white oak. But I practically logged and burned all the timber on my farm. My first and second teams were oxen. After I was through with these teams, I used horses.
"My first hay crop I carried to the stack on my back in bundles bound with ropes. After I got my first yoke of cattle I hauled my hay and grain to the stacks on a large treetop. I also used a treetop as my first drag to cover wheat and oats at sowing time.
    Bought Jumper
"I afterwards hired a man to make me a "jumper" and paid him $1.50 when he had completed the job. I was the happiest man on earth when I got this modern piece of machinery. Then I could dispense with the treetop and move loads about the farm in the up to date style.
"For a number of years I threshed the grain on the farm with a flail. After awhile a threshing machine, horse driven, the size of a cook stove moved about from farm to farm doing the threshing. Although this machine did not separate the grain from the straw and chaff, it was a great improvement over the flail and I made use of it.
"I cleared seventy acres myself and when the boys were large enough they helped me clear the rest of the farm."
"In 1877, I married Miss McMyler, who came direct from Ireland, My wife helped me all she could with outside work, but her household duties and caring for a growing family took most of her time and were really more than she could do. I lost my wife a number of years ago.
"We have nine children but two of the number died in infancy. The living are Michael D., Little Chute, Mrs. William Conlon, Deer Creek; Mrs. Hannah McGinnis, Appleton; William, Milwaukee; P.J., Appleton.
Although "Pat" McClone has undergone the struggles, and hardships of clearing a large farm of heavy timber with a meager supply of money and tools and outlived all contemporary settlers in a large area about his home, he is still hale and hearty.

    Obituary:
Evan Cecil Carpenter, age 76, of Appleton, finished his last lap and took the checkered flag on April 9, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Evan was born at home on the family farm in the Town of Maine, Outagamie County on April 12, 1939 to Cecil and Evelyn (Conlon) Carpenter. He graduated from Clintonville High School, Class of 1957. Evan met the Love of his life Bonnie at the Caroline Ballroom. On June 5, 1960, Evan married his dancing sweetheart Bonnie Jean Radtke at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marion, Wisconsin. After they married, the happy couple made their home in Appleton, recently celebrating 55 years of a wonderful life together.
Evan was a self-taught heavy equipment mechanic at Superior Electric Co. (Michels Power) where he thoroughly enjoyed working for 37 years, retiring in 2004. His co-workers became lifelong friends who Evan enjoyed meeting for the retirees monthly breakfast.
Evan and Bonnie enjoyed their countless memories of good times with their many dear friends and family; especially LeRoy & Dar, Monte & Sal, Lynn & Dale, Phyliss & Don and Bill & Sandy. They also shared many laughs with the friendly staff and company while enjoying Brandy Old-Fashioneds and perch at Dick & Joan's Supper Club. Bonnie and Evan enjoyed dancing the Polish Hop to Polka music. They could be found dancing circles around everyone at the Cinderella or Caroline Ballrooms every Saturday night for many years.
Evan began his racing career in the 1960s on dirt tracks throughout Northeastern Wisconsin, including the half mile dirt track of KK Sports Arena (WIR). His second racing career took off in the 1980's and continued through 2008. As crew chief for his sons, Doug and Dan, he was a constant fixture in the pits at WIR ensuring the 88 and 28 cars were always race ready. He was awarded the honor of being a Lifetime Member of the Fox River Racing Club for his years of service to the club.
Evan was a devoted father who was involved with all of the boys' events, especially baseball. He loved watching the boys grow up on the baseball diamond, from coaching tee ball to attending every possible Little League, Babe Ruth, High School and Legion baseball game. He particularly enjoyed driving the Legion team bus, "Ole Blue". His fatherly devotion continued with the grandkids. Wherever one of the gang had an event (dance, sports, music) you would find Grandpa and Grandma. In between the family's many activities, Evan and Bonnie loved to travel. In 2007 they vacationed to Alaska, completing a visit to each and every one of the 50 states along with Canada and Mexico.
Evan will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Bonnie; children, Doug (Dawn), Dennis (Annette Arens), Don (Kelley) and Dan (Barb); Grandchildren, Benjamin (special friend Carly Rietveld), Desiree (special friend Dylan Kaufert), Brock, Andrea, Alexander, Zachary (special friend Alexis Rae Shannon), Adam, Tyler and his great-grandson, Brody.
Evan is further survived by his sister, Phyliss (Don) Goltz; brother-in-law, Bill (Sandy) Radtke and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Evan was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law Martin and Evelyn (Sieber) Radtke, brother-in-law Floyd Fritz and brother-in-law Robert Radtke.
The funeral service for Evan will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 912 N. Oneida Street, Appleton. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 starting at 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street, Appleton. Visitation will continue on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at Church with Pastor Roger McQuistion officiating. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Evan's name. Online condolences can be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.
The family would like to thank all of those who provided the outstanding care he received, including Dr. Yao and the staff at Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology; the entire staff at Appleton Retirement Community, especially the girls that became part of Evan's family, and ThedaCare at Home Hospice. We would especially like to thank all of the visitors and many friends for all of their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time. We love you Dad, Godspeed!
