    To Those I Love
When I am gone, release me, let me go I have so many things to see and do
Your mustn't tie yourself to me with tears Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love. You can only guess How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown. But now it's time I traveled on alone.
So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It's only for awhile that we must part
So bless the memories with your heart. I won't be far away, for life goes on
So if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear
All of my love around you soft and clear. And then when you must come away alone, I'll greet you with a smile and welcome you home.

    Obituary:
Appleton - Owen "Butch" Hughes went to his reward July 18, 2018 at aged 89. He was the son of the late Owen and Appolonia (Fermanich); and was preceded in death by his brothers Harold, Cliff, Leo, and Tom; his sisters Margaret, Florence and Lillian; his son-in-law Mike Earl; and many life-long friends especially "Pete" Peterson, "Bud" Barber, and Ruth Rucks. He is survived by his former wife of 53 years, Mary Jane (Greunke), and his sister Gertrude (Frank) Sprister as well as his children, Ed (Bobbalee) Hughes, Lynn (Tom Reitzner) Hughes, Angie (Dennis) Eppinger, Mary Sue Earl, Amy (Bob) Sanders, Chris (Tracy Romano) Hughes, and Erich (Marca) Hughes, grandchildren Margaret, Andy, Aaron, Sarah, Sam, Daphne, Marlo and great-grandchildren Tony, Patrick, Hendrick, Harrison, and Wren. He leaves behind many friends including his baseball partners Bob Ebben and Ed Gehrke.
Owen was a natural storyteller, gifted singer, bowler, baseball player, and student of the English language. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family camping throughout Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula, and South Dakota and on annual trips to Errington's Resort on Star Lake.
He graduated from St. Therese Catholic Grade School and from Appleton High School. He started playing baseball in grade school and, while in high school, he played for Appleton's Legion Baseball team. He was instrumental in driving home the winning runs for the state Legion championship in 1944. He started out as a Cub's fan until the Braves left Boston for Milwaukee. He was a season ticket holder for the Packers and could recall the days when other football franchises paid the Packers' travel expenses for away games.
As a child, he was responsible for fetching water from the well in the backyard on Kenilworth Avenue, and his strong work ethic carried him through 45 years with Riverside Paper Company, advancing to be one of the mill's few boiler technicians.
In his retirement, he worked part time, and maintained many birdfeeders, often used by squirrels, possums, and raccoons. He loved music and was a member of several church choirs. He sang at area nursing homes, the Thompson Center and Senior citizen clubs in the Fox Valley and was a member of the Hallelujah Gospel Choir.
He was a great neighbor and could be counted on to help in almost any circumstance. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In passing he joins his grade school friend James Williamson, who liked to remind him, "Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis".
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday, July 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton, with Father James Leary OFM Cap officiating. Friends may visit at the church on Monday from 9 am until 10:15 am. Interment will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Appleton.
Owens's family thanks the caregivers at Brewster Village for the excellent care and friendship they provide during his last days.

    Obituary:
Tom Rickert, 80, of La Jolla, CA, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on December 4, 1932, in Green Bay, son of Lawrence Sylvester and Kathryn Magdlena (Coppes) Rickert. Tom grew up in the Fox River Valley and was especially fond of the time he and his sisters spent at Box Elder Grove School in the Town of Clayton. From this one-room schoolhouse, he went on to graduate from St. Mary Central High School and St. Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota. Before he attended Marquette University School of Dentistry, he spent almost three years in the US Army in Germany as an x-ray technician. When he returned, he met Geri Kokke and was united in marriage on June 6, 1959, in Appleton. They lived in Milwaukee while Tom finished his last two years of dental school. Upon graduation, Geri and Tom moved back to the Fox River Valley and eventually settled in Neenah where Tom set up his dental practice. Tom and Geri loved to spend time with their children, extended family and friends. They enjoyed nearly 42 years together, Geri died, on March 31, 2001. Tom retired in 2005 and in 2007, he fulfilled a longtime dream to live in California. He loved to look at the ocean, it brought him so much happiness.
Tom is survived by his beloved children: Larry (Kerry) Rickert, Middleton; Dr. Robert (Dr. Sandra Titzer) Rickert, Del Mar, California; Pam (Mike) Patterson, Brookfield; and Nicki (Erik) Mortensen, Wauwatosa; fourteen grandchildren: Julie and Emily Rickert, Middleton; Jonas, Viviane, and Linnea Rickert, Del Mar; Erin, Hayden, Sean, Heather, Nolan, and Gavin Patterson, Brookfield; Annika, Kaia, and Brekka Mortensen, Wauwatosa; and; two sisters: Judy (Paul) Kolosso and Mary Towsley; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Christine Ulman, Paula (Richard) Hebeler, Don Phillips and Michael Bauer; and many other relatives and friends.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister: Joan Phillips, brother- and sister-in-law: Robert Ulman and Yvonne Bauer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2013, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 620 Division St., Neenah, with Fr. Michael Ingold officiating. Visitation will be held at the church Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or St. Mary Central High School.
Tom appreciated all caregivers that crossed his path. Being a medical professional himself, he understood how important and difficult the occupations of these dedicated individuals are. He saw no reason to be anything other than cooperative, kind and thankful when he himself was under the care of others for reasons big or small. The family also expresses deep appreciation and thanks for all who provided care on Tom's behalf in the Fox Valley and California.

He is known to have been a POW at a Pathet Lao prison camp in Laos. He and other prisoners attempted to escape twice from the camp. He was recaptured on his 1st escape attempt and he is listed as MIA as a result of his second escape attempt in 1966.

Served in Bureau of Land Management as a Smoke Jumper for 3 years in Alaska and Montana.
Eugene DeBruin was portrayed by Jeremy Davies in Werner Herzog's 2007 film Rescue Dawn.

    News Mention:
In September of 1963, Eugene DeBruin of Kaukauna was shot down and taken prisoner in Laos. At the end of the Vietnam War no negotiations were made for the prisoners held in Laos. Over the past 50 years our government has never made a formal request for him of any of the other estimated 600 people that were left behind in that country. Please say a prayer for these poor people that were left behind.

    News Mention:
Eugene DeBruin of Kaukauna, whose plane was shot down by communist in Laos several weeks ago, has been reported by Air America to be alive but a prisoner.
DeBruin, 30, was a crew member of the Air America plane which was shot down by the Pathet Lao on September 5 in northern Laos. He was one of three Americans abroad the plane. The Pathet Lao mentioned Eugene's name last Saturday as the only survivor. Senator Nelson (Dem) Wisconsin later contacted the DeBruin's and told them the state department was negotiating for the release of Eugene. No information was available as to whether he was injured.

    News Mention:
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph DeBruin received word that their son, Eugene DeBruin, 30, presently a prisoner of the pro-communist Pathet Lao troops, will be released soon. DeBruin's plane was shot down over Laos on Sept 5 while dropping supplies. He was one of five that survived the crash. The announcement was made by Prince Souphanouvong, Pathet Lao leader, according to AP press dispatches. Information received stated he was being treated well by his captures. Air America, the concern which DeBruin was affiliated, has suspended its operations in Laos.
Update January 2010 - Information released through the U.S. freedom of information act confirms that Air America was operated by the C.I.A. during the Vietnam War. The U.S. would not negotiate with Laos for the release of POW's. Eugene and over 300 other prisoners were never released.

    Obituary:
When Marie Rossmeissl's mother died in 1998 in home hospice care, Marie held her in her arms in the final moments, and whispered assurances, so that her mother could let go and begin the journey home. Now Marie is traveling her own journey.
With her sister, Carole, at her bedside, Marie died at home on November 12, 2008, at age 61. She had struggled with crippling pain and steeply declining health in recent years, the result of multiple, massive injuries sustained in 1999. While walking to work one early April morning, she was struck and dragged by the driver of a motor vehicle. She survived the extensive injuries, but could not return to her job or to any job.
Marie had been a valued employee of Aramark Services of Appleton for more than thirty years, with near-perfect attendance.
Called "Mutzie" by family, a German term of endearment used with young children, she was a self-taught artist and creator of "outsider" art. She delighted in finding artistic and new uses for everyday castoffs, and had been working on a series of rusty metal, garden sculptures, when chronic pain forced abandonment of the project.
A spirited, yet gentle soul who sought harmony in daily living, she recognized the dignity in all people regardless of race, religion or social status. When a coworker's home fell into extreme disrepair, she joined a group of Aramark employees who spent one full weekend of thorough cleaning, sanitizing, painting and repairing all interior spaces before replacing carpeting, furniture and other household furnishings, at no cost to the homeowner.
When two box turtles needed shelter, Marie provided it. She researched their dietary needs, built a worm box in the basement, injected the worms with vitamins for amphibians and fed the worms to the turtles. An epileptic puppy found a safe and secure home with Marie throughout his lifetime. Along with ongoing medical care, she provided unconditional love until his death years later.
Marie found comfort in traditional Roman Catholic teachings, as well as in certain spiritual practices of Native Americans. She frequently lit prayer candles at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton for loved ones, both living and dead.
Along with her mother, Gerry Hardy Rossmeissl, she is preceded in death by her father, Matt A. Rossmeissl and by infant niece, Sarah Ann Rossmeissl.
She is survived by two sisters, Carole (Jerome) Smaglik of Port Washington, WI; and Susan (Michael) Shaw of Tustin, CA; and by one brother, Matt F. (Cathy) Rossmeissl of Mount Vernon WA; and by their families; and extended family. Although she and her siblings were separated geographically, her bond with them, and theirs with her, was deep and strong.
She had no children of her own, but cherished the children of others, and relished their company and conversation. The children of former neighbors, Dan and Lisa Butkiewicz, were especially dear to her.
Her quiet life on a quiet street was buoyed by friendships with childhood friend and neighbor, Patrick Casey and Casey's mother, Mrs. Frederika Casey. Longtime friend and former coworker, Janice Christensen Paul, of Salem, OR, was never far from Marie's thoughts.
Marie donated her body to science for medical study and education, and for tissues transplantation. "I hope they use every bit of it," she said.
Great gratitude is extended to Erin Sebranek, R.N., of Affinity Visiting Nurses Hospice, for extraordinary, compassionate end-of-life care. The family thanks primary care physician, Dr. James Haine; and Pain Specialist and Medical Director of Affinity Visiting Nurses Hospice, Dr. Nancy Homburg; and their staffs; along with primary care physician and friend, Dr. Paul Sumnicht; and the many staff members at Affinity Visiting Nurses who were involved with Marie's care.
Valley Funeral Home of Appleton assisted the family. A private service and burial is planned. Memorials to Affinity Visiting Nurses Hospice are suggested.

    Obituary:
Ben was born in Appleton, on a rainy March 28, 1988, to Steve and Ann Van Handel. He attended Jefferson Elementary, Wilson Middle School and graduated from Appleton West High School in 2006. He then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and will receive his Bachelor's Degree in Economics with minors in Math and Statistics in May.
Ben loved rainy days, Minneapolis, the Packers and Brewers, his family and friends and sports, for which he had an incredible mind for sports statistics. Because of the loving giving person Ben was, it was his wish to continue giving by donating his organs so that others could enjoy life as much as he did.
In addition to his parents, Ben will be sadly missed by his sister, Rachel; his paternal grandparents, Ray and Marge Van Handel; aunts and uncles, Dan and Debbie Van Handel, Kelly Minten, Sally and Bud Jenks, Jane and Pete Ruckdashel, Bill and Deb Fermanich, Joe and Sally Fermanich, Mary and Dale Youngs, Kevin and Jill Fermanich, Karen and Andy Ratzlaff and Kriss Nett; and cousins, Eric and Lauren Van Handel, Kelsey and Lindsey Minten, Scott, Becky, Emily and Eric Jenks, Katie (Steve) Zurawski, Diane Ruckdashel, Kim (Dan) Gindt, Rob (Wendy) Fermanich, Jessica (Duston) Quandt, Andy (Kim) Fermanich, Molly (Alex) Rambo, Caitlin Fermanich (Josh Peirick), Ellie, Sam, Jenna and David Youngs, Lydia and Wesley Fermanich, Tara, Sam and Megan Ratzlaff, Adam and Kalee Nett. He is also survived by his many friends from Appleton and from the U that he loved dearly and considered his family.
He will be greeted in Heaven by his maternal grandparents, Victor and Hildegarde Fermanich; and his uncles, Kenny and Bob Fermanich.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at ST. BERNARD PARISH (1617 W. Pine St., Appleton) from 2:30 p.m. until the time of Mass at 6:30 p.m. The Rev. Dennis Ryan will officiate.
