Stephen was baptized 27 Dec 1825, Borrisokane Parish, Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe, Tipperary. His parents are listed as Michael Carty & Mary Gleeson; sponsors: Tim Carty, Ann Gleeson; residence: Kyleagoonagh. This record, together with those of his siblings, may be viewed at the National Library of Ireland: http://registers.nli.ie
Stephen came to the USA as a young man and worked as a farm laborer in NY for 10 years in order to save money to purchase land and help bring his brothers and mother here from Ireland. He eventually bought the WI homestead near Appleton, sight unseen, from the brother of the farm owner for whom he worked.
When he had saved enough money, he traveled by train from NY to Chicago and then to Milwaukee by stagecoach. This was about 1858, and everything beyond Milwaukee was still wilderness. Stephen had to walk all the way from Milwaukee to the homestead he had purchased near Appleton. Upon arrival, he found two native Americans living on the property with a small log shelter. They assisted him in clearing the land and making a home.

    Biography:
MICHAEL JOHN McCARTHY, the owner of a fine farm of 170 acres, located in Grand Chute township, which he devotes to the breeding of fine live stock, was born in Center township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, October 3, 1865, and is a son of Stephen and Margaret (Stoffel) McCarthy, the former a native of Ireland and the latter of Bavaria, Germany. Stephen McCarthy came to the United States during the early '50s, and for ten years was employed as a farm hand in New York State. He then came to Center township, settling on a farm which he had bought three years before without seeing it, and there he continued to farm until his death, August 20, 1901. He rose to a position of prominence in his community and was elected to various local offices by his fellow townsmen. His widow, who survives him and resides on the farm, is one of the well known and much beloved ladies of that section. They had the following children: Helena, the wife of Michael Farrell, residing at Menasha; Michael John; Timothy, who lives in Grand Chute township; Etta, deceased, who was a Sister in the Good Shepherd Convent, St. Louis; Stephen, a foreman in a rolling mill at Milwaukee; William, a Center township farmer; Katherine, deceased, who was a Sister in the Good Shepherd Convent; Mollie, single, living with her brother William; Joseph, deceased, who was a dentist in Milwaukee, and Johnnie, who is living on the old homestead with his mother. Michael J. McCarthy received a limited education in the public schools of Grand Chute township, his help being needed on the home farm when he was a boy. He remained with his parents until he was thirty-two years old, and was then married and moved to the farm which he now operates, which he had purchased some time before. He now has 170 acres of land, 155 acres being under cultivation and the rest in timber, and he operates this as a stock farm, making a specialty of Holstein cattle, registered stock, bred for dairy purposes, of which he keeps a large number on hand continually. He devotes his entire time to his stock raising, and has a farm equipment that is thoroughly up-to-date in every respect. Mr. McCarthy is an independent democrat in politics, and is a member of the Roman Catholic church at Mackville. He was married July 18, 1898, to Miss Theresa Stoffel, who was born in Grand Chute township, June 21, 1878, daughter of Joseph and Anna (Pfeifer) Stoffel, natives of Bavaria, the former being born in 1832 and the latter in 1855. Mr. Stoffel came to Outagamie county in the early '50s, buying a, farm in Grand Chute township, where he continued to live until his death in 1893. By a former marriage he had five children, and to this union with Anna Pfeifer there were born two children: Mrs. McCarthy, and Bertha, the wife of Michael Myers, a restaurant proprietor of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy have had seven children, as follows: Marie, born September 8, 1899, who died in infancy; Loretta, born May 23, 1900; Kathryn, born August 22, 1902; Florence Elizabeth, born August 15, 1904; Mabel Margaret, born September 28, 1906; Josephine Louisa, born November 25, 1908, and Michael Stephen John, born February 28, 1911. Mr. McCarthy is a member of the Holstein-Fresian Breeders' Association, and is well known among stock men in Outagamie county.

    Most likely this Tim McCarthy, but also possibly could be Tim McCarthy born 1835 (would have be abt 72 at the time of news);
Tim McCarthy narrowly escaped being killed at the site of the new electric power plant Tuesday morning by falling a distance of thirty feet, landing on solid rock. Those who saw the accident claim that he turned a complete somersault, landing on his feet. He complained of his ankle which upon examination was found broken and also suffered intense pain in his back.

    Biography:
WILLIAM P. MCCARTHY, whose excellent farm of 181 acres is located in Center township, is one of the well-known agriculturists of his section and a son of pioneer parents. He was born December 19, 1875, on his father's farm in Center township, a son of Stephen and Margaret (Stoffel) McCarthy. Stephen McCarthy was born in Ireland, in December, 1821, and in about 1848 left County Tipperary for the United States, landing at New York. After a period covering ten years spent in hard, faithful work on a New York farm, he had accumulated enough money to purchase a team of oxen, a wagon and several other necessities, in addition to sending money home to his mother in Ireland, his father having died when he was about ten years old. With his team and wagon he came to Outagamie county in 1858, having purchased the land three years before without seeing it, and here he built a log cabin and settled down to clear the farm from the wilderness. As soon as he was able he sent to the old country for his mother, who came and lived near him, on the land which now belongs to William P. McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy was married November 2, 1862, to Margaret Stoffel, who was born January 25, 1842, in Germany, daughter of Michael and Margaret Stoffel. Michael Stoffel walked from Milwaukee, whence he had come in 1854, to Madison, and then on to Outagamie county, finally settling in Grand Chute township, where he was engaged in farming until his death at the age of eighty years. Stephen P . McCarthy died August 11, 1891, but his widow still survives him and makes her home with her son, John .
William P. McCarthy received his education in the schools of his neighborhood and the Sisters' school at Mackville, attending during the winter months, while the summers were spent in the hard work of the home farm, as was the custom of farmers' sons at that time. He always worked at home for his father, and when the latter died he inherited 107 acres west of the present place. Here he resided until he was thirty-two years old, at which time he bought the farm which he now cultivates, a fine tract of 181 acres, where he has carried on general farming and dairying. Mr. McCarthy's sister, Mary, lives with him and takes care of the duties of the household. In his political views Mr. McCarthy is a Democrat. He is connected with St. Edward's Catholic Church at Mackville .

    Biography:
JOHN THOMAS MCCARTHY, a representative of one of Outagamie county's pioneer families, carrying on operations on a fine tract of farming land in Center township, was born on his father's farm in this township, October 10, 1883, a son of Stephen and Margaret (Stoffel) McCarthy. Stephen McCarthy was born in Ireland in December, 1811, and when twenty-seven years of age came to New York. There he spent ten years in faithful work, and in addition to sending money home to his mother to help support the family, the father having died some years before, he accumulated enough to purchase a tract of wild land in Center township, Outagamie county, and came here with a team of oxen, a wagon and other crude necessities, to try and wring a livelihood from the soil. Building a log cabin, he settled down to clear and cultivate his property, and when he died, August 11, 1891, he was one of the wealthy and respected citizens of Center township. On November 2, 1862, Mr. McCarthy was married to Margaret Stoffel, who was born January 25, 1842, in Germany, daughter of Michael and Margaret Stoffel, early settlers of Grand Chute township, where Mr. Stoffel followed farming for a long period. Mrs. McCarthy still survives her husband, and is making her home with her son John T. She and Mr. McCarthy had ten children.
John Thomas McCarthy was eighteen years of age when his father died, and he at once took up the management of the home place, later purchasing the property from his mother. His education was secured in the neighborhood schools and the Sisters' school at Mackville, but as he had to work hard during his youth he could not attend as much as he would have desired. He now carries on general farming and dairying, raising good crops and finding a ready and profitable market for his produce. On November 24, 1908, Mr. McCarthy was married to Louise Weiss, daughter of Irwin and Agnes (Ebert) Weiss of Ellington township. Mrs. McCarthy obtained her education in the schools in the neighborhood of her father's farm in Ellington township. She and Mr. McCarthy have had one child, Lucile, who was born September 16, 1909. In politics Mr. McCarthy is a stanch democrat, and with his wife he attends St. Edwards' Catholic Church at Mackville.

    News Mention:
APPLETON - The late Joseph McCarthy needs no introduction here in the Fox Cities.
Whatever Americans think of the Grand Chute native and former senator, it's not lost on us that "no man in Appleton - or Wisconsin - history has left such a mark on the national and international scene in such a short space of time," as one editorial from The Post-Crescent put it after McCarthy's death in May 1957 at age 48.
Now, 60 years after his passing, McCarthy - of the political and controversial crusade against alleged communists during his time in the U.S. Senate in the 1950s - is back in the news, his name being referenced in today's heated political climate. President Trump referred to McCarthyism in one of his late-night tweetstorms and others have broached McCarthy's name in debates over illegal immigration and travel bans.
"It's like McCarthy is hot again," said Jerald Podair, a history professor at Lawrence University.
McCarthy is the subject of two books that are in the works from noted authors.
Former Boston Globe journalist-turned-author Larry Tye is on the hunt for fresh stories about McCarthy, a former grocer, boxing coach and chicken farmer in an Irish-Catholic family who rose to be one of the most infamous politicians in American history.
Another author planning a book on McCarthy is Wisconsin native David Maraniss, a Washington Post editor and biographer who's written about Barack Obama, Al Gore and Green Bay legend Vince Lombardi. Maraniss did not respond to requests from USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin about his plans but has been discussing the book project on social media.
Tye's previous book on Bobby Kennedy partly sparked his interest in McCarthy. Little do some know, Kennedy and McCarthy "not just worked together but were friends," Tye said in a phone interview with USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin. "That intrigued me."
Records from McCarthy's closed-door hearings were made public in recent years - documents that could provide insights on McCarthy that weren't available for earlier biographies, Tye said.
But mostly Tye hopes to connect with people who knew McCarthy personally, whether as a friend, foe, journalist or acquaintance.
"This is the last shot for people who are still alive, and partly a feeling that the world today deserves to have what may end up being the last take on McCarthy," he said.
Tye's first trip to Wisconsin for research on the book - a two-week visit in February - proved helpful. Tye connected with McCarthy relatives and friends, former Post-Crescent journalists, curators at the History Museum at the Castle, former politicians and the current homeowners of the McCarthy homestead in Grand Chute, among others.
"They just have been really responsive whether they liked Joe McCarthy or hated Joe McCarthy," Tye said. "People want to tell the story and get their side out to make sure the book is fair."
    Connections from McCarthy to today
Historians are largely attributing the recent interest in McCarthy to his ties - both personal and ideological - to the candidacy and election of Trump.
Trump was mentored in the 1970s and 1980s by Roy Cohn, who's been called the "right-hand man" to McCarthy. The question remains, though, how significant Trump's apprenticeship under Cohn was, said Matt Carpenter, the executive director for the History Museum at the Castle in Appleton.
"Is it a minor story?" Carpenter said. "Would Trump say he learned from the Cohn playbook, or really the McCarthy playbook? I'd like to learn more about that."
Carpenter and others also equate Trump's policies that got him elected as another example of the consistent tension between individual rights and national security that pops up frequently in American history. While McCarthy took the deep-rooted fear of Communism into public policy, the fear of terrorism and newcomers to the country were central to Trump's campaign and now presidency.
"This tension between the perception that there is a trade-off between national security and political freedom is an ongoing scene throughout history," said Landon Starrs, a University of Iowa history professor.
McCarthy's anti-Communist crusade is a "textbook" example of that tension, Carpenter said. Trump's commitment to building a wall on the Mexican border, plans to deport undocumented immigrants, executive orders against those traveling from predominantly Muslim countries, among other ideas, have created similar debates.
Trump himself accused President Barack Obama of "McCarthyism" in a Saturday morning tweet alleging, with no evidence, that Obama had wire-tapped Trump Tower during the election.
Trump also has been heavily criticized by members of his own political party during his campaign and his early presidency, similar to McCarthy, Carpenter said. It wasn't Democrats who led the campaign for McCarthy's censure in the Senate, but Republicans.
"Mark Twain supposedly said that history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes," Podair added. "And thinking about McCarthy and his relationship to what's going on today, it's starting to rhyme."
Those Trump ties aren't lost on Tye and his publisher.
"Trump's critics say he's another McCarthy and that we have to learn the lessons of McCarthy," Tye said. "Trump supporters are often McCarthy supporters and the lesson is that their guy advocates for controversial causes like McCarthy did.
"It definitely has come back to the public lens and I'm trying to tell (the story) in light of this new interest and new historical record that hasn't been plumed yet."
    McCarthy's reputation in Appleton
When Podair first came to Lawrence University in 1998, he noticed a sense of ambivalence around McCarthy. While history books have largely vilified McCarthy, in Appleton where people knew him personally and professionally, "in some sectors, he was considered to be a hometown boy made good," Podair said.
When the Outagamie County Justice Center was constructed in the early 1990s, county supervisors debated whether to name the building after McCarthy. But one supervisor backtracked the seriousness of the proposal, calling it a "joke," and saying he was embarrassed for bringing it up, according to a Post-Crescent story from the time. Others disputed that, saying that McCarthy should be praised "for his continuous service to democracy and the fight against Communism."
A bust of McCarthy was dedicated in 1959 at the Outagamie County Justice Center. County officials discussed in the 1980s whether to remove the bust, but those efforts stalled. It wasn't until 2001 that the McCarthy bust would finally be moved out of the courthouse and donated to the History Museum at the Castle for use in a McCarthy exhibit.
Plenty of assumptions were made about how the exhibit would frame McCarthy before it was complete, Carpenter said. Those within the Fox Cities thought the museum would paint McCarthy in a bad light, while those outside the Fox Cities assumed it would attempt to rehabilitate the image of a hometown boy.
"Our position wasn't either of those," Carpenter said. "We just said, 'Let's talk about what's important, what we can learn from this, and open up the conversation.'"
After the exhibit opened, the reaction was largely positive, both from family and friends of McCarthy and detractors of McCarthy.
The bust is now the most asked about item at the museum, Carpenter added, whether it is on display or not.
"Even though people understand him nationally as an embarrassment, he still is the local boy," Podair said. "If you knew him, you actually like him personally because he was perfect for this area - no pretense, no airs, no arrogance, friendly to everybody. But he also was a vicious political insider when it came to politics. But people here separate the personal from the political."
Previous biographers have also made a connection between the conservative John Birch Society, located in McCarthy's hometown of Grand Chute, and McCarthy. The John Birch Society, known for its anti-Communist advocacy, was founded in 1958, one year after McCarthy's death.
"The John Birch Society, the final word in right-wing extremism and anti-Communist paranoia, made its home in Appleton - keeping vigil, as it were, beside the fallen hero's tomb..." wrote Arthur Herman in his introduction for his biography of McCarthy. McCarthy is buried in Appleton at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
But the John Birch Society says the connection is more perceived than real, outside of their shared home, anti-Communist sentiment and a single photo of the society's founder, Robert Welch, with McCarthy.
"They do have a picture together so they knew each other, but there was no working relationship," said Constance McDaniels, the public relations manager for the John Birch Society.
The move in 1989 from Massachusetts to Grand Chute was also not for ties to McCarthy, but because the chief executive officer during that time lived in Appleton, McDaniels said.
With only one month of work in, Tye said he has no prediction of what his book will bring to McCarthy's story and legacy, "but I'll try to tap into all these new records and tell a nuanced story that's fair to him, but also fair to what his own voice tells us that we haven't heard before."

Edwin M. Cooney, 80, went home May 20, 2014, in Phoenix, Ariz, after failing health.
Ed was born in Appleton, Jan. 29, 1934, and was a graduate of Appleton high School 1952. Ed's family has been settled in the area since 1856, farming in the New London area.
In 1952, Ed joined the Marine Corps and served in the Korean War, was honorably discharged (Sgt).
Upon Ed's return from Korea he married Carole Koerner from Appleton and started their family in Richmond, Va., with the birth of two sons, David and Dennis.
The couple then moved to Milwaukee and had a son and daughter, Dan and Diane, later relocating to Lake Mills to raise their family.
Ed was a successful entrepreneur throughout his career having several successful enterprises. Though hard working, Ed always vacationed with his family and had the children experience over 35 states including Mexico and Canada.
On Nov. 27, 1987, Ed and Janet Shannon were married in Tarpon Springs. During their 15 year stay in the area, Ed held a number of positions with the Mobile Home Association. In the positions that he held, it gave Ed and Janet a number of opportunities for traveling for meetings but they always made time for sightseeing. Ed enjoyed boating but after the second rescue by the Coast Guard it was time to travel on land, so a motor home allowed then to travel and keep their feet on solid ground. When Ed retired from Hess in 2002, they decided to come north and build a home that had a view of Lake Superior in the Bay of Haviland. Janet was reunited with her children living nearby and Diane and her family were able to visit more often as the miles between them were much less. Ed was involved with the Mother of God church and both enjoyed not only attending the Sunday services but the other functions.
Ed is survived by his two former wives, Carole Koerner, Menasha; and Janet Shannon, Sault Ste. Marie, Canada.
Ed and Carole had four children, David, Appleton; Dennis, Lake Mills; Daniel, Chandler, Ariz.; daughter, Diane (Kent) Kisow, Sheboygan and their four children, Ryan, Hawaii; Joshua, Madison; Sam and Ben, Sheboygan.
Further survived by sister, Marion "Cooney' Simon, Kaukauna; and Terri Harris (Larry), California.
In Canada he leaves behind stepchildren, Dianne, Gloria, Val, Peggy, Geraldine, Ian and Larry, plus 11 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren. Ed will be missed by family and friends.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Edwin R. Cooney and Kathryn (McCarthy) Cooney; a brother, Sgt. Richard Cooney; two sisters, Sister Alanna Cooney, S.S.N.D. and Joanne Hartkemeyer; two brothers-in-law, George Simon and Les Hartkemeyer; his granddaughter, infant Abbi Carolyn Kisow. Arch grew up on the family farm near Stevensville where he learned the value of faith, family, and hard work. He was proud of his gardens that produced vegetables year round! Later, during his time in the army, he helped with the reconstruction of Germany after WWII, giving him the skills that were helpful in his future work back home where he worked in the construction industry. In the late 1960's he became co-owner of Wunderlich-Hoffman ,building bridges all over the state.
In retirement Arch and Barb enjoyed traveling the globe with trips to Yugoslavia, Egypt, England, Australia, Columbia, Argentina, Morocco, China, Hong Kong, Mexico among others. Their excursions included boat rides on the Amazon, Nile, Danube, and Volga rivers as well as the Panama Canal.
Arch was very connected to his church parish, St. Therese, and was a member for over 60 years. After retirement he was a handyman for the church for many years.
Arch will be remembered as a father with many talents, always willing to help with any projects. He was a grandpa that had fun with all the kids, frequently playing with them on the floor with the Lincoln Logs or marble game he made, or with a child next to him shelling peanuts or playing cards. He recently looked forward to weekly family gatherings to play cards and 'talk smart'.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday September 11 at 11:00 AM at St. Therese Catholic Church 213 E. Wisconsin Ave., Appleton. Visitation will begin at 9 AM. Friends and family will gather for a luncheon afterward at the Grand Meridian, 2621 N Oneida St, Appleton, and then Arch will be interred at Riverside Cemetery with full military honors.

    Obituary:
James L. "Jim" Coon, 66, of Kaukauna, formerly of Appleton, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013. Jim was born on April 24, 1947 to Elmer G. and Ethel (Hoffman) Coon in Appleton. On April 20, 1968 he was united in marriage to Jean Smudde at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Jim worked at Sysco Foods for many years and was currently president of TFM Promotions, Ltd. and Tournament Director of the Midwest Walleye Series and other fishing events. Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter, but his greatest joy came from being Grandpa and spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren. The time he spent with his family was always special and those times will always be treasured.
Jim was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, lifetime member of Walleyes for Tomorrow, Fox Valley and Central Wisconsin Chapters and a member of Whitetails Unlimited. He was also a volunteer at church and several other organizations.
Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jean, and their three children; Jenny (Robert) Massey, of Kimberly, Jackie (Adam) Piette, of the Town of Buchanan, and John Coon, of Grand Chute. He was also a loving and devoted grandfather of four grandchildren; Lindsey and Abby Massey, Ella and Natalie Piette. He is further survived by four siblings; Tom (Kathy) Coon of Appleton, Ted Coon of Appleton, Vicki (Ken) Kroiss of Kaukauna, and Diny (Jeff) Heindel of Kaukauna, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Leo Smudde, Tom (Marilyn) Smudde, Dan (Bonnie) Smudde, Rose Mary Francis (Norman Texeira) and Anne Springer, a special friend and business partner, Raymond (Shelly) Harris, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Leo G. and Ellen Smudde, a sister-in-law Debbie Coon, and brothers-in-law Robert Francis and James Springer.
The funeral liturgy will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 11:30 AM at ST. THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1810 N. McDonald St, Appleton. A time of visitation will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013 from 4:30 until 7:00 PM at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri County Chapel, 3212 S. Oneida St., Appleton, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM and on Tuesday from 10:30 AM until the time of the mass at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Jim's name. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Fr. Falk and all of those who have prayed for Jim and the family during this difficult time. Online condolences may be expressed at www.wichmannfargo.com.
