    Biography:
SERVATUS HOFFMAN, who is engaged in cultivating the soil of Center township, Outagamie county, where he owns an excellent piece of farming property, is a member of an old and honored Wisconsin family, founded here in 1846 by his grandfather, who came to America in 1827 from Germany, and after living in Ohio for nineteen years, came West to Wisconsin and settled in Milwaukee county. Up to this time he had followed the tailoring trade, but on coming West he became engaged in agricultural pursuits, purchasing land near Granville, where he spent the remainder of his life. Philip Hoffman, his son, was born on shipboard while his parents were coming to this country, and he was nineteen years of age when the family located in Wisconsin. At the age of twentyone years he was married to Margaret Uhlman, and bought a farm in the vicinity of that owned by his father, but eventually moved to Menominee Falls. Later. he retired from active life and located in Fussville, where his death occurred in 1905. Servatus Hoffman was born June 17, 1857, near Granville, Milwaukee county, his education being obtained in the schools of that place and Fussville, and his boyhood was spent on his father's farm. In 1881 he was married to Mary Brill, daugter of Peter Brill, of Waukesha county, and for ten years the young couple lived on the farm of Philip Hoffman. At the end of this time Mr. Hoffman purchased his present farm in Center township, and 'during the next seven or eight years the family home was a little log house, but now the property is equipped with a large, comfortable residence and good barns and other buildings. Eleven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman, namely: Lucy and William, who are deceased; Barney, who married Katherine Reuhle, of Green Bay; Peter; Philip; Josephine, who married Leo Gregorius, of Appleton; Rosa, who married Joseph Fischer, of Indiana; Margaret, who is a sister in the convent at Silver Lake; and Christina, Ottilie and Ferdinand, all living at home. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman are members. of St. Edward's Catholic Church at Mackville.

    Obituary:
Leon W. Ulman, age 94 of Appleton, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2015, surrounded by all his children, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was reunited with his wife of 61 years, Lorraine. Leon was born at home in the Town of Greenville on September 19, 1920, the third child of Henry Ulman, Jr. and Christina (Hoffman) Ulman. He attended St. Mary's Grade School in Greenville and Roosevelt Junior High in Appleton. He worked on the family farm, raising chickens and hogs. Vegetables and fruit trees were harvested to sell door to door in Appleton. He grew up to be a tall, handsome man with blue/black hair and hazel eyes. He was a kind and gentle soul. He related to his family his many childhood adventures growing up on the farm. He had an incredible memory and could remember minute details of events, people and dates, starting with his very early childhood.
In December, 1941, he married Lorraine A. Sturm at St. Therese Church, Appleton. He entered military service, trained in Richmond, Virginia and Bangor, Maine before he was sent overseas and served in India, Burma and Pakistan. He was a sergeant, serving with the 1905th Aviation Engineering Battalion under Lord Mountbattan. He was head cook on the road crew that was building the Great Burma - Lido Road. When he returned to Appleton in December 1945, there was so much snow he stayed overnight at the Conway Hotel in Appleton before going home. He returned to his job at Wire Works, but was unhappy with being inside a dark building all day after "camping out" for more than two years in the jungle. He then worked for his Uncle George Ulman's painting business for 16 years before striking out on his own. He was proud of the fact that he was able to provide for his family. Leon and Lorraine traveled extensively to many military reunions. After retiring at 72, they traveled to Hawaii and to Florida many times. He enjoyed going "up north" fishing, playing cards, and reading books, especially biographies.
He was a charter member of St. Thomas More Parish in Appleton, an usher for 50 years, a fourth-degree member of Council #607 of the Knights of Columbus, and served in numerous other charitable activities.
He is survived by his children; Barbara (Thomas) Martens, Kathleen Ulman, Marjorie (John) Ehle, Nick (Jodi) Ulman and Joseph Ulman, grandchildren; Suzi Martens, Jeff (Traci) Martens, Joel Martens, Casey (David) Rudey, Jason Ulman and Kristy (Corey) Bauman, great grandchildren; Alicia, Andrew, Jarrett, Rachel, Sarah, Luke, Austin, Brendon and Heath. Leon is further survived by brothers and sisters in law; Bernice Randerson, Rita Pritzl, George (Mary) Sturm, Al Sturm, Elaine Kurey, Patty (Glen) Griesbach and Cyril Sturm, many other relatives and friends.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, his parents, his in laws, George and Elizabeth Sturm as well his siblings; Servatius (Regina) Ulman, Ferdinand (Edna) Ulman, Clifford Ulman and Helen (Francis) VandenBerg, brothers and sisters in law; Theodore (Frances) Sturm, Leroy Kurey, Helen (Shorty) Wittman, Richard Pritzl and Marilyn Sturm.
A funeral service for Leon will be held at 11:00AM, Friday, January 30, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1810 N. McDonald St, Appleton with Rev. Gerald Falk and Rev. Jim Lucas con-celebrating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00AM until 10:45AM. Military honors will follow services at the church and burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the outstanding staff at Brewster Village for their kind and compassionate care, and thank you to Father Falk for a lifetime of friendship and spiritual support.

Archabald S. (Archie) Hoffman, 90, of Appleton, passed away Monday, September 7. Predeceased by wife of 57 years, Barbara, and infant son Brian as well as sisters: Ethel, Margaret and Genevieve. Survived by many nieces, nephews and siblings: Joseph, Richard and Frances; son David (Betsy) of Lake Elmo, MN, and daughter Martha (George) Curtis, son Matthew (Connie), son Paul (Kathy), and Timothy (Tricia) all of Appleton. Arch grew up on the family farm near Stevensville where he learned the value of faith, family, and hard work. He was proud of his gardens that produced vegetables year round! Later, during his time in the army, he helped with the reconstruction of Germany after WWII, giving him the skills that were helpful in his future work back home where he worked in the construction industry. In the late 1960's he became co-owner of Wunderlich-Hoffman ,building bridges all over the state.
In retirement Arch and Barb enjoyed traveling the globe with trips to Yugoslavia, Egypt, England, Australia, Columbia, Argentina, Morocco, China, Hong Kong, Mexico among others. Their excursions included boat rides on the Amazon, Nile, Danube, and Volga rivers as well as the Panama Canal.
Arch was very connected to his church parish, St. Therese, and was a member for over 60 years. After retirement he was a handyman for the church for many years.
Arch will be remembered as a father with many talents, always willing to help with any projects. He was a grandpa that had fun with all the kids, frequently playing with them on the floor with the Lincoln Logs or marble game he made, or with a child next to him shelling peanuts or playing cards. He recently looked forward to weekly family gatherings to play cards and 'talk smart'.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday September 11 at 11:00 AM at St. Therese Catholic Church 213 E. Wisconsin Ave., Appleton. Visitation will begin at 9 AM. Friends and family will gather for a luncheon afterward at the Grand Meridian, 2621 N Oneida St, Appleton, and then Arch will be interred at Riverside Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorials preferred to the family to be used for son Matt's recovery from a stroke.
