    "The late Orin Meyer County Agent said there was a legend about the elderly man being so mean that when he was buried the "mourners" heaped stone upon his grave so that he would not be able to come back to the land of the living!

    Van Hammond, Alice M., "Welch ", KaukaunaAge 86, passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 23, 2003. She was bo rn on April 5, 1917, daughter of the late Levi and Lena Welch. On July 2 7, 1937 she married Martin Van Hammond in Little Chute. He preceded h er in death on December 20, 1996. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage. Alice 's father was an avid Cubs fan and she carried on the tradition. She w as a self taught musician and loved to play the organ. Her hobby involved crocheting dolls, afghans and making quilted blankets for her grandchil dren and great-grandchildren, which brought her great joy. Alice also enjo yed her cats Princess and Precious.Alice is survived by eight children: Shirley Ann Still of Appleton, Dick ( special friend, Mardie Paalman) Van Hammond of Little Chute, Jerry (Lind a) Van Hammond of Kaukauna, Jim (Jane) Van Hammond of Kimberly, Joe Van Ha mmond of Appleton, Arnie (Peg) Van Hammond of Combined Locks, Bunny (Le e) Ellenbecker of Appleton, LuAnn Fenske of Appleton; 15 grandchildre n, 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Art (Pearl) Koehne of Kaukauna; four s isters-in-law: Frances (Joe) Gerrits of Appleton, Lorraine Daniels of Appl eton, Mildred and Lloyd Vander Heiden of Freedom, and Verna (Tony) Gloudem ans of Little Chute.Alice is preceded in death by her husband Martin, her parents, son Danny V an Hammond; son-in-law, Bob Still; daughter-in-law, Maryann Van Hammond; t wo brothers: Gorden and Lloyd Welch; and three sisters; twin sister Lucille Vanden Boogart, Dorothy Hacker and Helen Wirth; and a sister-in-law, Ag nes Wydeven.The funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Gr eenwood Fargo Funeral Home, 500 Hendricks Avenue, Kaukauna, with Sister Fr ancine Goodman officiating.     Arthur Koehne, an employee of the Kaukauna Post Office for the past 18 years, was recently informed of his appointment as assistant postmaster at Kaukauna, succeeding Mrs. Gen Anderson, who retired from the service on February 28.

    Obituary:
    Arthur David Koehne, husband, father and grandfather passed away at the St. Paul Villas of Kaukauna on Friday, December 6, 2013.
    He was born and raised in the city of Kaukauna and attended local schools.
    In 1972, he was inducted into the Kaukauna Athletic Hall of Fame.
    Art was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard 32nd division for 38 years. During 5 of those years, he was on active duty in the New Guinea, Bung Mission Campaign, and World War II as a staff sergeant. He was discharged in September 1945. In 1947, after attending Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, he re-entered the guard as a second lieutenant and eventually rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. His duties included: command of his former Company D, and he retired from military service in 1978.
    Art was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years and worked in various positions ending as post master and superintendent of mail. He retired in 1978. After retirement, he and his wife, Pearl traveled extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. He was a current and charter member of The Fox Valley Golf Club. In the late 1960's he shot a hole-in-one in Lakewood, Wisconsin at the McCaslin Brook Golf Course.
    Art was active in his former parish of St. Mary of the Annunciation serving as athletic director and coached it's basketball team of which he was very fond. He also served on the financial committee of the Parish. He was currently a member of Holy Cross Parish and served on the community meals on wheels program.
    Art was a member of the Kaukauna Lions Club, and he served three years as treasurer. He was elected President in 1976 and served as zone chairman for our area. Art was also a former member of the Kaukauna Elks Club and currently a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
    Art is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Pearl Casey Koehne; three daughters, Mary Beth (Ken) Schumann, Jane (Steve Vuchetich) Koehne, and Nan (David MacArthur) Luedke; and his three beloved grandsons, Matthew Schumann, Carl Schumann, and Brett Luedke.
    Funeral liturgy for Art will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. A time of visitation will be held at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Art will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery.     Obituary:
    Harry J. Wirth, age 86, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side, on Sunday morning, June 4, 2017, at Century Oaks Assisted Living. Harry was born on February 22, 1931, in Kaukauna, oldest son of the late Harold Sr. and Helen (Dix) Wirth. Harry graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1949. During his high school years, he played trumpet in the school band and was also a gifted boxer, a sport that he continued during his Navy years. Harry honorably served in the United States Navy from 1949 to 1956. In 1951, Harry met the love of his life, Diane Vander Zanden, and married her a year later on July 1st,1952. They enjoyed almost 65 years of marriage.
    Harry had many interests. He was involved in the Lions club where he had many roles including; President, Vice President, Lion Tamer and received the Melvin Jones Fellow award in 1994. He also belonged to the Kimberly Community Band as a trumpet player participating in many parades and concerts. Harry was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Fox Valley Golf Club, and enjoyed the camaraderie of his golfing buddies. In 2003, at the age of 72, Harry was thrilled to get a hole-in-one on the #8 hole. He loved watching his grandkids playing in all types of sports. In his early years, Harry pitched in the fast pitch soft ball league, as well as sponsoring and participating in various bowling leagues. In the early 70's, he coached basketball at St. Mary's grade school. Harry and Diane enjoyed many years at their Legend Lake home with family and friends. He was also an ardent Packer Fan. Harry was a skilled dancer, although the only one able to keep up with him was his wife Diane.
    Harry's passion for the bakery industry actually started when he was a teenager helping out at Kalupa's Bakery (now Hill Top Bakery). Later, with a young wife and growing family, Harry pursued other opportunities in the field. Stops at Omar's Bakery in Milwaukee, Elm Tree Bakery in downtown Appleton, Mason's Bakery in Florida culminating with six years as supervisor of the Super Value chain in Waukesha. In 1969, the opportunity to purchase Hill Top Bakery (formerly Kalupa's), lured Harry and Diane with their family of eight back to Kaukauna. The challenge of owning his own bakery, with its daunting hours and hard work was demanding but rewarding to both Harry and Diane. With their children's help it was truly a family affair. Hilltop Honey House, a holiday classic and nationally distributed for many years (and still is) epitomized Harry's legacy at his Kaukauna bakery. They owned Hilltop for 26 years until their retirement. However, Harry continued to decorate cakes, work holidays, and mentor employees until he was 80. He retired and passed down the bakery to his daughter Lynn and husband Mark. In 2009, Harry was inducted into the Wisconsin Bakers Hall of Fame.
    Harry is survived by his loving wife: Diane; his eight children: Susan (Jim) Hill, Daniel (Vicki) Wirth, Thomas (Angela) Wirth, Timothy (Kathy) Wirth, Scott (Teri) Wirth, Lynn (Mark) Engel, Jay (Paula) Wirth, and Shari Wirth; 15 grandchildren: Jason (Ashley) Hill, Kimberly (Tom) Stapleton, Nicole (Danny) Immel, Tyler Wirth, Landon (Nicole) Wirth, Brenton Wirth, Kevin, Jessica (Jeff) Flynt, Jennifer (James) Fashingbauer, Kelli Wirth, Ryan (Brittney) Wirth, Faustine Engel, Miles Engel, Laura (AJ) Looker, and Gabrielle Engel. Harry is further survived by his 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Robert and Marvin; his oldest granddaughter: Andrea Wirth; parents-in-law: George and Marie Vander Zanden; and several other in-laws.
    The Funeral Liturgy for Harry will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2017, at HOLY SPIRIT/HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 East Kimberly Avenue, Kimberly, with Father Bob Kollath officiating.     David J. Thurner, Menasha, age 61, died unexpectedly Sunday August 19, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was born April 15, 1951 to the late Lawrence and Lucille Vanden Boogart. David was then adopted by Nicholas and Gladys (Romenesko) Thurner. He attended Oshkosh School for the Deaf and Kaukauna High School, graduating in 1970. Through his attendance at Friday night dances at the V.F.W, David was later reunited with his birth family. David married Deborah Graves on April 16, 1988. He loved the holidays and enjoyed decorating for them. He also enjoyed parties and weddings and loved to polka. David is survived by his wife of 24 years, Deborah; sisters: Lila Thurner, Carol (Richard) Nelson, Barbara (Andy) Zielinski, Judith Saubel and Alice (John) Gerhardt; step-brother Orile (Christine) Milton; step-sister Dorothy (Harry) Van Lith; father and mother-in-law Donald and Rebecca Graves; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Sandra (Fred) Stecker and Michael (Sandra) Graves. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. David was preceded in death by his birth parents: Lawrence and Lucille Vanden Boogart; adoptive parents: Nicholas and Gladys Thurner; step-mother: Harriet Thurner; brother: David Vanden Boogart; and brother-in-law: Timothy Graves. Visitation will be held Thursday August 23, 2012 at Christian Life Center (670 N. Green Bay Road Neenah) beginning at 3:00 p.m. until time of funeral at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor Phil Bridges officiating. A memorial is being established. David was a kind and giving man. His final gift was through the act of eye and tissue donation.
