    James Herbert Powell, 97, formerly of Kaukauna, died at his home Saturday July 25, 2009. Herbert was born in Stockbridge on March 14, 1912, to the late Myron and Mary Ellen (Robinson) Powell. He married the love of his life, Mary Ellen "Marie" Promer, at Holy Cross Parish on Dec. 29, 1936. Their 77-year journey together ended when she preceded Herbert in death on Jan. 25, 2009. Herbert was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus Kaukauna Council 1033. He retired from the asphalt department at Thilmany's in 1976. Herbert's hobbies included bowling and cars. His greatest joy was in spending time with his family. He was a proud grandfather and was thrilled to have welcomed the newest member, great-great-grandson Thomas, into the fold.
    Herbert is survived by his daughters: Rosalie (Dr. Thomas) Hennes, Neenah; and Shirley (Roger) Larsen, Appleton; grandchildren: Diane (Kevin) Heimerman, Scott (Bonnie), Patrick (Beth), Michael and Gregory Hennes, Brian Larsen, Yvette (special friend Neil Jenkins) Verhagen, Renee (fiance Steve Nelsen) Seidl and Laurie Campshure; 14 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law: Muriel and Doris Powell. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
    Herbert was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Mary Ellen; his parents; and sisters and brothers: Lucille (LeRoy) Balza, Agnes (Herbert) Martzahl, Anna (Lawrence) Ahrens, Ila (Gus) Brehmer, Michael (Lorraine), Robert, Eugene and William (Viola) Powell.
    Visitation will be held Monday August 3, 2009, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH (309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna) beginning at 9 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Bob Lexa will officiate. Committal Holy Cross Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established in Herbert's name.
    The family sends a very special thank you to his grandson Gregory Hennes who has cared for him 24/7 for the last six months. Also thank you to Hospice nurse Katie and her team.

    Sister Norma Balza, age 87, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Wednesday morning, January 28, 2015 at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.
    The former Norma Balza was born on June 11, 1927 in Kaukauna, daughter of the late Leroy R. & Lucille (Powell) Balza. She entered the Convent in 1941 and professed her vows in 1945. Sister Norma earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc, and a Masters Degree from Notre Dame University, Notre Dame, Indiana. Sister Norma served as a teacher and/or principal at St. Boniface and St. Paul, Manitowoc, St. Paul, Wrightstown, St. Mary, Brillion, St. Mary, Clarks Mills, St. Anne, Francis Creek, St. Francis, Hollandtown, St. Joseph, Waukesha, all of Wisconsin. She also served as Curriculum Library Manager at Silver Lake College, secretary to St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc and Holy Family School, Green Bay and Sponsor Presence Representative at St. Paul Manor, Kaukauna. Sister Norma retired to St. Francis Convent and since 2010 has been a resident of St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
    Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; one sister: Edriss Vandeyacht; two brothers and sisters-in-law: LeRoy and JoAnn Balza, Richard and Jean Balza; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Leroy and Lucille (Powell) Balza; one sister and two brothers-in-law: Dorothy and Alvin Kihlman and Lloyd Vandeyacht.
    Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Placid Storik, O.F.M. with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
    The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2015 and Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Holy Family Convent Chapel.
    The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

    Nancy C. (Martzahl) Deitz, age 60, New London/Bancroft, accepted a bear hug from Jesus on May 21, 2011, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, surrounded by her loving family. She was a loving mother and grandmother born on July 18, 1950, to Herbert and Agnes Martzahl. At 18, she married Roger Deitz and had a daughter, Tina Marie. After the passing of Roger she became engaged to Marvin Ernst and had a son, Bradley Marvin. Marvin Ernst preceded her in death. Eight years ago she was blessed again to have met her love Peter Rekoske.
    During her life she worked at Mer and Jackie's Supper Club, Pantry Restaurant. She also worked for Peters Poultry, Bush Sauerkraut, Hillshire Farms (SaraLee), Old Country Buffet and finally retiring from Kings Wisconsin Veterans Home where she worked in the Kitchen. Her hobbies included working with her and Pete's Recycling business, which on any given day you could catch her cleaning copper or out rummaging looking for that right piece of brass. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. She loved going to the casino to play the slots or going out to a restaurant for coffee and a lot of socializing or even stopping for a cold one to talk to friends.
    She is survived by a daughter, Tina Deitz-Gilman (Scott); a son, Bradley (Shari Cochran and her children, Stephen, Eddie, Chelsea and D.J.); grandson, Xavier Ernst, special friend, Peter Rekoske (and family). Four sisters, Jean (Gerald) Bauman, Susan (Harold) Schroeder, Norma (Dennis) Van Elzen and Judith Pahl; four brothers, Donald (Shirley) Martzahl; Melvin (Diane) Martzahl, and Philip (Becky) Martzahl; brother-in-laws, Gerald Buchberger and Henry (Charlene) Dietz; sister-in-laws, Shirley (Dennis) Larue and Kathy. Nana is further survived by three very special boys: Devon, Zachary Ryan, and Jordan Kuhnke; special friends, Dawn Ryan, Sherry Derks and Rickie Limoges, very special families, the Kuhnkes and Van Stratens and also many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services for Nancy will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 7 p.m. at Cline & Hanson Funeral Home, New London, with Pastor Rodney Otto Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of service.
    The family would like to extend a sincere than you to Town of Grant and Bancroft first responders. Also St. Michaels Emergency room staff at Steven Point, and most of all CCU nurses, Valerie, Corey, Jessica and the rest of the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
    In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund.
