    Biography:
    FRANK TILLMAN, one of the leading agriculturists of Buchanan township, whose fine property of 120 acres is situated in section 31, was born in Little Chute, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, March 15, 1849, and is a son of John and Mary (Vandebrook) Tillman. Mr. Tillman's parents, who were natives of Holland, came to the United States in 1848 and settled at Little Chute, where Mr. Tillman secured employment in the construction of the canal at that point for the government. Later he bought forty acres of raw wood land from the government, on which he erected a log house from poplar trees which he cut himself, and split the shingles for the roof. Mr. Tillman continued to cultivate this land until his death; which occurred some fifteen years later, his widow surviving him about three years. Frank Tillman, who was the youngest of four children, was fifteen years of age when he commenced working for wages, and he continued to do so for about fifteen years. He then purchased fifty-four acres of partly-cleared land in Buchanan township, on which had been erected a log shanty, and there he spent the next twenty-five years of his life. Having improved this property, he sold it at a handsome profit and purchased the 120-acre tract where he now lives, and now has ninety acres under the plow. General farming has claimed his attention, and he also markets dairy products, milking ten graded Holstein cows. His buildings are in an excellent state of repair, and include a two-story frame residence equipped in modern style, and a substantial barn, 110x38 feet. A plentiful supply of water for all purposes is secured from drilled wells. In political matters Mr. Tillman is a democrat. He and his family are connected with St. Francis Catholic Church of Hollandtown. Mr. Tillman was united in marriage in 1878 to Miss Clark, daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Murphy) Clark, natives of Ireland who came to the United States some years after marriage and settled in Hollandtown, Brown county, Wisconsin, on a farm, on which they spent the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Tillman was the youngest of a family of four children, and was born in 1848 and died in 1896, being buried in the cemetery at Hollandtown. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Tillman: Frances, who is married, lives in Milwaukee and has one child; Peter, who is single and living in Montana; and Albert, who is married, lives with his father on the homestead, and has three children.

    Playing with a box of photographic flashlight power proved a dangerous experiment to a group of school children at Badger rural school, route 1, Appleton, Tuesday. Emrnet Tillman, 9-year-old son of Mrs. Albert Tillman, route 1, Appleton, was severely burned about the right hand when the powder exploded. One youngster found the box of powder in the barn at his home and brought it to school to show his friends what it would do when a match was applied. The Tillman boy was standing nearest the box when it was ignited and his hand received the blast which followed. He was rushed to a doctor for first aid treatment.

    Obituary:
    LaVerne A. (nee Tillman) Coenen of Appleton, WI, passed away unexpectedly at her home and found peace with the Lord on Sunday, November 1, 2009. She was born on February 24, 1924, in Appleton, WI, daughter of the late Albert and Mae (Kobussen) Tillman. LaVerne married Clyde Coenen on December 27, 1947. Together they shared a family focused life full of faith and love.
    LaVerne is survived by her children: Dan (Sally) Coenen, Athens, GA; Amy Coenen (Arthur Anderson), Milwaukee, WI; Doug (Cathy) Coenen, Richboro, PA; Chip (LuAnn) Coenen, Appleton; Paul (Michelle) Coenen, Appleton; and Beth Strohbusch, Milwaukee. "Nana" is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Tim (Ann), Tom, Michael, Amy, Claire, Andy, Sara, Sam, Kristin (Nick Kelly), Ben, Dan, Clay, Laura, Maria, John and Will; and her great-grandson Aaron; by her sister, Delores Ocepek, Milwaukee; and by many family members and friends who admired her steady and nurturing strength.
    LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, who passed away on April 22, 2009; by her son, Greg, who passed away on June 23, 2008; and by Greg's wife, Peg, who passed away on January 12, 2005.
    LaVerne was dedicated to her husband, her children and their families, her siblings and their families, her friends, her community and her Lord. She embraced life in her own way, always opening her mind to new ideas and always putting others before herself. She showed patience, respect and concern, and was readily willing to forgive.
    In many ways, LaVerne was a woman before her time - a renaissance woman, of sorts. While she understood and respected the "rules" of her generation, she didn't hesitate to speak her mind about issues of importance to her. LaVerne loved learning and appreciated opportunities to share her knowledge. She was a great listener and many listened to her, seeking out her perspectives and using her words of wisdom to help guide their lives. LaVerne inspired many with her love.
    Special thanks are extended to staff members at Touchmark, Dr. Lee Vogel, and all family and friends who have prayed for LaVerne and helped her in countless ways.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 S. State St., Appleton, with Father Michael K. O'Rourke officiating. Friends and relatives may visit at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.

    Gregory J. Coenen, of Glastonbury, CT, age 58, found peace with the Lord on June 23, 2008, after a courageous and spiritual journey with cancer. He was loving father of Tom Coenen and Tim (Ann) Coenen, and proud grandfather to Aaron Gregory Coenen (born May 7, 2008), all of Chicago. Greg was preceded in death by his wife Margaret "Peg" Coenen (nee Morrison) who died January 12, 2005. Greg loved Peg at first sight, and their love was at the center of his life for 33 years.
    Greg is survived by parents: Clayton and LaVerne Coenen, Appleton, WI; brothers: Clifford and Paul Coenen, Appleton, WI; Dan Coenen, Athens, GA; Doug Coenen, Richboro, PA; sisters: Amy Coenen and Beth Strohbusch of Milwaukee, WI; and brother-in-law Michael Morrison, Minerva, OH. Greg is also survived by Marie Hersman, Dover, NH, whose love and wisdom helped make Greg's life complete during recent years.
    Greg was born July 21, 1949, in Madison, WI, and lived in Appleton and Milwaukee, WI, Warwick, RI, and Glastonbury, CT. He was significantly shaped by his experience of and reflection upon all around him, including family and faith life, political and world affairs, business experiences, travel, and day-to-day living.
    Greg was a Marquette University graduate. As editor of "New Day," a Model Cities newspaper, Greg had a knack for identifying and celebrating ordinary Milwaukeeans who made extraordinary contributions to city life. As manager of publications and information for the Milwaukee Department of City Development, he took pride in his roles in developing Summerfest, Grand Avenue and 'The Spirit of Milwaukee' multimedia production. After moving to New England, Greg played a significant part in creating New England USA, a regional tourism bureau, and Heritage Harbor, a planned state history museum for Rhode Island. He directed the New London (CT) Development Corporation, a planning and economic development agency, and also served as a consultant in planning the Milwaukee County Research Park and in developing Wisconsin State Fair Park as a year-round destination.
    Greg recently wrote this: "There are three critical human values that should guide our every move. The first value is love which must guide all. The second value is respect which should be at the root of all we do. The third value is recognition of human dignity. We must always share the dignity that is especially ours. In cherishing and perfecting these values, we will make the world a better place for us all."
    The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to the Gregory J. Coenen Family Foundation, a charitable trust founded in honor of Greg and Peg in care of Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home.
    Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 26, from 4 p.m. until the time of Memorial Service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

    Daniel "Danny" Coenen, 24, of Appleton, WI, passed away on March 17, 2016. He was born on September 4, 1991, the loving son of Clifford "Chip" and LuAnn (Hase) Coenen, caring brother of Kristin (Nick) Kelly and Ben Coenen, and proud uncle of Evan, Jackson, Brycen and Weston who is Dan's Godchild. Dan is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends who admired Dan for his upbeat and caring nature. Together, the family shared a close bond of happiness, encouragement and love. Dan is preceded in death by his grandparents Clayton and LaVerne Coenen of Appleton and Theodore and Eleanor Hase of Viroqua. Dan attended Catholic Central Elementary School, Wilson Middle School, Appleton West High School, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was currently enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
    Danny greatly enjoyed family, friends, fishing and fun. Music, laughter, Spain and the Spanish language were among his passions. TL.
    Dan loved life, and more than anything, he loved the people in his life. His family and friends meant everything to Dan. His caring, generous heart and spirit will always be held close to all who loved him. And his choice to be a tissue donor will help others in their lives.
    The outpouring of prayers, love and kind words is deeply appreciated. Special thanks are extended to all family and friends who knew, appreciated and respected Daniel - and especially to those who've been near to us during this time of great grief. Dan taught us all how to love and we will see him again in heaven.
    Dan's life will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, with a visitation from 2:00pm to 4:00 pm at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N Richmond St, Appleton, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Mary Parish Cemetery at a later date.
