Buried:
Wilhelm was the first to die after the family immigrated to Appleton. He is buried next to his wife, Louisa, in unmarked graves. They are not near any of their sons' family plots.

Biography:
Born in Sassenhgen Pommern, Kreis, Germany Ferdinand (Fred)immigrated to the U.S. April 15, 1883. He arrived in Baltimore at age 24 with his first wife Wilhelmine (Minnie), 27, and their two daughters Marie (2) and Auguste (6 months). They had only 1 colly of belongings and listed Wisconsin as their final destination. Traveling on the SS Strassburg with them was his brother Karl and his family. His other brothers, Wilhelm and Hermann came over 6 months later. They made their way and settled in Appleton. Fred opened a tea and spice business delivering to all the German famers in the area.
His wife Minnie had two more children, Martha and Frank, in Appleton before dying in childbirth in 1886. This left Fred with four children under the age of six.
On November 2, 1886 he married his second wife, Louise Kreutzmann, who had a daughter, Minnie, age 9. Louise and Fred had four children together (Louise Ella, William Charles, Eugenia Caroline and Emma). Louise died in childbirth with Emma in April 1894. This left Fred with eight chidren between ages 2 and 17.
On November 2, 1894 (same date he married Louise) Fred married Annette Anna Blumenkranz, a divocee from Russia with two daughters of her own. Fred and Anna had five children: Henry WIlliam, Theodore Herman, a baby girl, Anita Ottilie, and Mildred Emilia; but only three lived past childhood.
Fred died due to an accident with a train in 1906. He was out in a horse-drawn cart making his usual runs to the area farms. As was his habit, he stopped for a drink or two on the way home. The horse arrived home without the wagon or Fred. They found him injured along the train tracks, his wagon in bits, having been hit by a train as the horse ran across the intersection. He was brought home where he died in the wee hours of the morning from head injuries.
He is buried with all three wives and the two infants who died in childbirth.

Herman was born in Vosberg, Pommerania, Germany and was the fourth of five children born to Mary Louise (Ehlert) and Wilhelm Friedrich Belling. He arrived in Baltimore, MD on October 20, 1883 at age 22 with his younger brother William who was 19 at the time. They traveled on the S.S. Ohio from Bremen, Germany.

Portions of the obituary in Merrill newspaper: Herman Belling was Elder and School Board Member of St. John's Church for several years.

"Herman Belling, elder of St. John's Lutheran Church until his resignation 3 weeks ago, died just before noon today after being confined three weeks in bed due to carcinoma of the stomach.
He was born January 19, 1861 at Vosberg, Pommerania, Germany and came to this country in 1883, locating directly in Merrill. Here he was married Nov 15, 1886 to Miss Auguste Schultz, who survives him...Two brothers, William and Carl live at Appleton."

Herman and Auguste had six children: Amanda, Gustave, Herbert, Else, Lydia and Erwin.

Albert was the third of 14 children born to Ernestine Wilhelmine (Schultz) and Karl Friedrich Belling. He was born in Pommerania, Germany and came over to the U.S. with his parents in April 1883. The family settled in Appleton. On January 31, 1899 he married Martha Marie Therea Bierman, the only child of Bertha (Knitt) and Christian Bierman. Together they had seven children: Wilmer, Elmer Carl, Wilbert Carl, Mabel Emilie, Hazel Emma, Loretta BErtha and Richard E. Martha died of diabetes in 1913. Seven years later, Albert married a widow, Emily (Adams) Sparrow from Montreal, Canada. Emily and Albert had three children: Burton Emil, and twins: Walter Oran and Callace Carl.

The second of four children born to Wilhelmina Augusta (Moeser) and Johan Friedrich Ferdinand Belling, "Gustie" came to America with her parents and older sister Mary in April 1883. On September 19, 1903 she married Rudolph Johan Carl Friedrich Witt of Greenville. Togehter they had two sons: Edwin Ferdinand and Marvin Herman. Sadly Edwin died at age two of tuberculosis and spinal menangitis in 1906. A year later, Rudolph succombed to tuberculosis as well. Six years later she married Oscar Richard Loos, himself a widower. Together Gussie and Oscar had four children: Gertrude Mary, Willard, Oscar William, Jr. and Earl Henry. Only Oscar, Jr. survived childhood.

Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home from 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon until 10 o'clock Wednesday morning and then at the church until the time of the funeral service.
Services will be held at St. Johns Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Andrew Guenther in charge. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.

Together they had four children: Bernice Esther, Howard Norman, Evelyn Louise and Harold Frank. Eugenia and Peter divorced. Eugenia remarried Arthur M. Francois on September 14, 1937. Peter died in 1938. Eugenia and Arthur were married 35 years when Arthur died in 1972.

Dorothy M. Glander, age 90, of Huntington Woods, MI, passed away on March 23, 2008. She was born on July 17, 1917, to the late Frank and Dora (Casperson) Belling in Appleton, WI. Following her graduation from Appleton High School in 1935 she worked in the offices of Belling Transfer and W. S. Patterson. Dorothy had a good singing voice and was in many local variety shows. After her marriage to Wendell Siefferman in the late forty's she moved to Huntington Woods, MI, where she resided for the rest of her life. After Wendell's death she married James Glander in 1978 until his death in 1995. While living in Huntington Woods, she became an excellent medalist golfer. She loved boxer dogs and cared for many over the years. She also was very active in the Detroit Woman's Council of the Navy League of the United States and was elected their President from 1983-1985.
Dorothy is survived by her nephews: Wayne Belling of Milwaukee, WI, and Charles Belling of Madison, WI, also Gloria and Linda Belling, Susan (Belling), Lauren and Mich Dillon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Orville, Donald and Merland; her husbands: Wendell Siefferman and James Glander of Ohio.
A graveside memorial service at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton, WI, will be announced at a later date. Memorials to the Humane Society in your area or the American Cancer Society would be very appreciated.

John L. Belling, 76, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Appleton Medical Center. John was born on December 29, 1935 in Appleton. He was a veteran having served in the US Army in Germany. On May 9, 1959 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nancy Heaton and they celebrated 53 years together. He worked for over 30 years as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. John was a life member of the MacDowell Male Chorus and enjoyed it very much. He enjoyed fishing, taking meticulous care of his yard and was an avid Packers and sports fan. John's true love was his wife, children and grandchildren and the time they spent together will always be cherished. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and a lifelong member of First English Lutheran Church.
John is survived by his wife, Nancy Belling, three children; Scott (Nicole) Belling, Mebane, North Carolina, Susan (John) Schemm, Appleton, and Julie (Kurt) Kemps, Appleton, five grandchildren; Laura, Steven and Lynn Schemm, Katie and Michael Kemps, all of Appleton, a sister Jean Burmeister, Appleton, and many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his mother Grace Belling, mother-in-law, Esther Heaton, sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Al) Golz and brother-in-law, Don Burmeister.
A memorial service for John will be held on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM at FIRST ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 326 E. North St. Appleton, with Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Monday, from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at the church.

Ethel C. Verkuilen, age 88, of Appleton, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at Brewster Village. She was born in Menasha on July 7, 1920, the daughter of Ed and Viola (Grade) Belling. Ethel graduated from Menasha High School, and was united in marriage to Henry N. Verkuilen on September 3, 1938. The Verkuilens were charter parishioners of St. Bernard Catholic Church, and Ethel was an Appleton resident for 59 years. She was employed for 25 years for Kimberly-Clark Corp. in their research and development lab and retired in 1980.
Survivors include her sons: Gerald (Roseann) Verkuilen, Appleton; Thomas (Susan) Verkuilen, Green Bay; her daughters: Mary (John) Smith, Appleton; Susan (Michael) Treviranus, Sun Prairie; her grandchildren: Michael (Cassandra) Smith, Stacey (Joe) Thibodeau, Vannessa (Gilbert) DeSantos, Scott (Carol) Verkuilen, Tammy (Lyle) Thomas, Heidi (Jason) Wilcox, Paul Verkuilen, Amanda Treviranus, and Keeley (Nathan) Matson; there are 13 great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Jane Belling, Neenah.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Fred.

Virginia A. (Belling) Sass, 92, Appleton, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2012 at her home. She was born Sept. 25, 1920 in Appleton the daughter of Elmer and Helen Belling. She was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Navy Hospital Corps at Bethesda, MD and Great Lakes Hospital where she met Donald Sass. The two married on Oct. 20, 1945 and Don preceded her in death on May 30, 1983. Ginny was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church and active in the Choir, Library Guild, a money counter and Sewing Lady for many years. She was a former member of the Pythian Sister Zenith Temple #31. She was also a member of the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer at the hospital for several years working mainly on the orthopedic floor. Ginny said, "I was the happiest when I was helping others".

Leroy Robert Belling, age 85, passed away at home on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Though he struggled with PLS for fifteen years, he managed to live life to the fullest. He was born on March 23, 1929, to the late Elmer and Helen Belling and resided in Appleton. Lee graduated from Appleton High School in 1947, and went on to serve his county in the U.S. Air Force until 1953. During his time in the service, he was in the 1946th AACS Sq in Berlin, Germany. Lee worked as an industrial electrician at Albany International for forty years, before retiring. He married JoAnn Elizabeth Hauert on February 26, 1954, and they spent 61 years together. Lee was a dedicated husband, and even during his illness, was more concerned with JoAnn's wellbeing than his own.
Lee liked spending his time woodworking and listening to classical music, especially Wagner. During his later years, he became an avid reader. Lee enjoyed following the stock market closely and was proud to be successful and self-taught. One of his greatest passions was his sweets, especially donuts and pies. He had many fond memories spending time with his grandchildren and family at their cottage on the lake.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Belling; children: Tim (Diana) Belling, Annette Livingston, Libby (Wlodek) Simon, and Jonathan Belling; grandchildren: Easton, Brice, Briley, Alex, Max, Megan, Sophie, and Andrew; sister, Carol Weiss; special cousin, Margaret Zahn; and sisters-in-law, Marian Hauert and Clarice Belling.
Lee was preceded in death by his siblings: Eunice, Ginny, Jack, Donny, Deloris, Jim, and infant Beverly.
A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 N. Superior Street, Appleton. Funeral service for Lee will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 E. Franklin Street, Appleton, with Rev. David Farina officiating. Thomas R. Belling, age 74, of Kaukauna, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 1, 2012. He was born on February 13, 1938, in Kaukauna, the son of the late Roy Theodore and Agnes (Zefra) Belling. On June 13, 1959, Tom married Sharon Coenen at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Tom was the owner of Bell-Bilt Manufacturing. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, card playing, especially cribbage and sheephead. Trips to the casino and playing a prank on someone were things that Tom looked forward to.
Tom is survived by his children: Lisa (Bob) Schleinz of Appleton, Joan (Mark) Ross of Little Chute, Kim Jadin of Appleton and Tom (Jodi) Belling of Kaukauna; grandchildren: Abby (Mike) Dion and Mark (fiancé Megan Sengstock) Schleinz; Nicole DuFrane and Bekki (Marcelo) Fonseca; Micah (Lisa) Ross and Emily Ross; Jackson and Charles Jadin; Michaela and Carter Belling; great-grandchildren: Dominic, Tyson and Meelah Fonseca; and Chase Dion; brother: Dave (Pat) Belling; sister: Kathy (Dave) Hahn; brother-in-law: Bob (Rella) Coenen; sisters-in-law: Julia (Jim) Schuh, Shirley Carlson and Lois Pomeroy. Sandra Martzahl, age 79 of Kaukauna, passed away at her home on Monday morning, April 17, 2017. Sandy was born in Appleton on September 28, 1937, daughter of the late Melvin and Olive (Belling) Skalmusky. She was a graduate of the Kaukauna High School, and on April 28, 1962, she married Paul Martzahl at Holy Cross Catholic Church. While still in high school, Sandy began working at the Kaukauna Community Hospital as a candy striper, and for many years to come was employed there as a nurses' aide. She loved the little ones, and many of her years were spent with young mothers and their new arrivals.
Sandy was a proud grandmother who enjoyed attending the sporting events of her grandkids, loved the family pets (which were mostly dogs), appreciated a flower garden and a good vine-ripened tomato, could tell a good joke, loved to read, happily prepared meals for the family, and loved to vacation in the north woods and sit by the fire.
Sandy leaves behind her husband: Paul Martzahl of Kaukauna; four loving children: Kim (Darin) Worsh of New London; Paula (Randy) Ashauer of Kaukauna; Bill Martzahl of Kaukauna; and Jason (Tina) Martzahl of Kaukauna; seven grandchildren: Dana (Jill) Siebers, Steve Siebers, Will Ashauer, Chris (friend Kendra and her daughter Maddie) Ashauer, Sarah Ashauer, Griffin Martzahl, and Liberty Martzahl; a brother: Robert "Butch" (Dottie) Skalmusky of Kaukauna; a sister: Judy Koch of Kaukauna; three sisters-in-law: Janice Skalmusky, Mary Jane Milheiser, and Anne (Tom) Jansen; and a brother-in-law: Gerald Martzahl.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, a brother: Richard Skalmusky; brothers-in-law: Bob Milheiser, Gene (Vivian) Martzahl, and Jack (Rita) Martzahl; sisters-in-law: Clara (Clarence) Van Dyke, Mary (Leon) Krueger, and Germaine (Howard) McCabe; and by Paul's parents: Bill (Genevieve) Martzahl.

Obituary:
Richard J. Skalmusky, age 64, died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 26, 2010 in Long Lake, Wisconsin while deer hunting. He was born July 8, 1946 in Appleton son of the late Melvin and Olive (Belling) Skalmusky. Dick was a Navy Veteran having been drafted in 1965 and serving until 1969. On January 29, 1972 Dick married the former Janice Van Schyndel at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna. The couple lived in Kaukauna their entire married lives. Dick was employed by the City of Kaukauna retiring in 2006 after 36 years of service. He enjoyed spending time up north hunting and fishing with "the guys". He loved his family and never said no to anyone who needed a hand. His grandchildren brought him special joy. Dick was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna.
Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Jan and their children: Angie (Jason) Wilber, Joel (Raquel Erickson) Skalmusky, Melissa Skalmusky all of Kaukauna; six grandchildren: Whitney (Kevin) Dewhurst, Ryan Preske, Katryna Wilber, Seth and Peyton Skalmusky, Hallie Skalmusky, and one on the way; one brother, Robert "Butch" and Dottie Skalmusky, Kaukauna; two sisters: Sandra (Paul "Wally") Martzahl, Kaukauna and Judy Koch, Kaukauna, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is further survived by his wife's family.
Funeral Services for Dick will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Schmit, Nancy J. (Nancy Jane Wydeven)
Nancy Jane Wydeven Schmit, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on March 18, 2010, at her home in Verrado, Arizona, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 22, 1938, in Appleton, Wisconsin, to Paul Wydeven and Ruby Belling Wydeven, Nancy was the oldest of her four siblings, who all reside in Wisconsin: Dennis "Whitey" Wydeven and wife Suzie of Kimberly, Dorothy "Dotti" Yahr and husband Don of White Lake, Donald "Don" Wydeven and wife Jan of Appleton, and Charles "Chuck" Wydeven and wife Leslie of Fond du Lac.
Nancy attended Holy Name grade school and graduated from Kimberly High School. Nancy loved to dance and jitterbug the night away with her friends and is remembered by her friends as the life of the party. Nancy attended college to obtain an art degree prior to purchasing her father's and grandfather's Kimberly-based insurance business.
Nancy married her husband William "Bill" on August 22, 1959, and after a brief absence from the Kimberly area, returned to her hometown in 1969 to raise three children: Jody of Goodyear, Arizona; Mark of Goodyear, Arizona; and Scott of Black Creek, Wisconsin. Nancy and her family began building their family cottage from the ground-up in scenic White Lake, Wisconsin in 1983. Nancy moved to Arizona in 1995, where she was joined by her daughter Jody and son Mark and their families. She spent the past fifteen years enjoying beautiful Wisconsin summers and spending time with her son Scott and wife Anita, while basking in the Arizona sun during the winters and spending time with her daughter Jody and her partner Nonnie, and her son Mark and daughter-in-law Carrie, in addition to their families. Nancy was active in the White Lake American Legion Auxiliary, St. Henry's Catholic Church in Buckeye, Arizona, and St. James Catholic Church in White Lake, Wisconsin.
Nancy's greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially doting on her five beautiful and talented grandchildren: Melissa, Stephanie, Allison, Tyler and Jessica. Nancy's first great-grandchild, Torin, was born to her granddaughter Melissa just months before her passing and her grandchild Vivian was born to her daughter Jody and partner Nonnie the morning after her passing. Nancy also enjoyed spending time with her many, many friends in Arizona and Wisconsin, including numerous high school friends with whom she had remained close for the past fifty years. Nancy loved cooking and entertaining and expressing her creativity through artwork and quilting. Her ability to decorate her homes was revered by all and inspired many family and friends to call on her to lend her creativity and polish to create beautiful family homes for their own families and Nancy always lended a willing hand. All who had the joy to have Nancy as a part of their lives remember her for her kindness, generosity and unique ability to make everyone she met feel welcomed and loved.
A memorial mass for Nancy will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010, at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH, 204 E. Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly, with Fr. David Beaudry officiating and Nancy's friend Sister Marie Andre assisting. Friends may call at the church on Friday, April 16th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the memorial mass. In lieu of flowers, Nancy requested that donations be made to Mayo Clinic Arizona to permit others to receive the same caring and compassionate treatment for multiple myeloma that she received over the past two years.

Gerald "Jerry" Charles Verkuilen, of Appleton, age 70, passed away Thursday evening after a short stay at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Jerry was born on October 15, 1943 in Wausau, Wisconsin to his parents Henry and Ethel (Belling) Verkuilen. He was united in marriage to Rose Ann (VanStraten) Verkuilen on April 15, 1967. Jerry served his country in the Marines from 1962-1965. He worked in the printing industry most of his life. Jerry enjoyed all sports, especially the Brewers, Packers, Badgers and car racing. Jerry also enjoyed spending time with his family by playing many card games, particularly cribbage and attending Brewers games.
He is survived by Rose Ann Verkuilen and their daughter, Vannessa (Gilbert) Desantos, two granddaughters; Chelsey (fiancé Brian Young) Desantos and Leah Desantos and Brad, and one great-grandson Joseph. Jerry is survived by siblings; Tom Verkuilen of Suamico, Mary (Jack) Smith of Darboy, and Suzie (Mike) Treviranus of Sun Prarie Wisconsin as well as many nieces and nephews. Vannessa (Verkuilen) DeSantos, of Appleton, age 44, passed away peacefully at home after a long and courageous battle with GIST cancer. She was born on September 23, 1969 to Rose Ann (Van Straten) Verkuilen and the late Gerald Verkuilen. On November 20, 1990 she married Gilbert DeSantos, and together they had two daughters, she was a wonderful wife and treasured her daughters. She enjoyed spending time with her family, she loved playing cards, going to the cottage and dancing. Vannessa's strength, selflessness and kindheartedness to all she knew will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Gilbert DeSantos, two daughters; Chelsey Rose DeSantos and Fiancé Brian Young and Leah Lupita DeSantos and Brad Pomplun and one grandson, Joseph Caleb. Vannessa is further survived by her mother, Rose Ann Verkuilen; father in law Jose H. Paul Christopher Verkuilen passed away in Indiana on April 21, 2016 at the age of 43. Paul was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on March 22, 1973 to Nancy (Harold) Hauser and Thomas Verkuilen.
Paul was a graduate of Appleton West High School and Marian College. He had many varied interests, sports, playing cards, competitive pool, golf... and always enjoyed family events. He will be especially remembered as a history aficionado and his trips abroad, especially London, were some of his happiest memories.
He will be deeply missed by those who survive: mother, Nancy, stepfather, Harold, brother, Scott (Carol) Verkuilen, stepsisters, Chrysta (Todd) Henrickson, Tammy (Lyle) Thomas, Heidi (Jason) Wilcox, stepbrothers, Greg (Shele) Hauser, Chad (Terri) Hauser, Matt (Mandy) Hauser.
