    Vander Velden, Robert A. "Bob"
    Robert A. Vander Velden, Greenville, age 91, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Bob was born in Little Chute on December 25, 1916, to the late George and Lillian (Boes) Vander Velden. On June 16, 1938, he married Virginia Schmit at Zion Lutheran Church, where he was a member. She preceded him in death October 17, 1989, after 51 years of marriage. Bob operated Bob's Inn in Appleton for 37 years. Upon retirement, he moved to Greenville.
    Bob was a great sportsman. Through the years, he caught over 1000 muskies, 11 of which were over 40 pounds. He invented and patented the Bobbie Bait in 1940 and the Bob Tail in 1987. Many of his baits have been used to break state records, including the record for Muskie. At the age of 91, Bob still consulted for other lure manufacturers. Bob also loved to hunt and didn't let his age get in the way of a successful hunt. Even in his late eighties, he was shooting bucks with his bow. He also shot several bear with his bow and 2 while gun hunting.
    Bob is survived by two sisters: Ruth Rhodes, De Pere; Mercedes Chartier, Appleton; two sisters-in-law: Gladys Buxton and Doris Vander Velden, both of Appleton; and special friends: Nancy Grant and Mark Nemec. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his wife and parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Vander Velden; sisters: Mabel (Gordon) Breier, Evylen (Jack) Lex and Loretta (O'Neil) Rochon; brothers-in-law: Henry Reese, Richard Buxton, Kenneth (Jean) Schmit, Robert (Margaret) Schmit and Raymond Chartier.
    Visitation will begin Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at 9 a.m. until the time of funeral at 11 a.m. at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH (912 N. Oneida, Appleton). The Rev. Wendy Wirth-Brock will officiate. Committal Highland Memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fox Valley Humane Association.
    Bob's family would like to extend their gratitude to Bob's neighbor, Jeff, who spent many hours with him and the visiting nurse that came to his home. They would also like to thank the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Dr. Carl Rasmussen for the care given to Bob.

    Ruth Rhodes, De Pere, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 07, 2008. She was born June 21, 1923, in Little Chute, WI, daughter of the late George and Lillian (Boes) Vander Velden. She married Harry Rhodes on May 1, 1941, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 8, 1988. Ruth waitressed at various restaurants and supper clubs for over 40 years, and worked as a crossing guard for the City of De Pere for the past 28 years. She also was the first non-family member to work at Seroogy's Candies. Ruth loved sports of all kinds, especially watching her sons and grandkids. She also enjoyed arts and crafts. Ruth was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church, which was an integral part of her life.
    Survivors include her three sons, Dave (Judi) Rhodes, Town of Rome, Wis., and their children, Dean (Shelly) Rhodes, Dan (Deann) Rhodes, Douglas (Megan) Rhodes, Holly Rhodes, Scott Bornowski, and Todd (Rebecca) Bornowski; Dennis (Judy) Rhodes, Allouez, and their children, Tamra Rhodes and Tiffany (Rod) Marceille; and Dale (Pat) Rhodes, De Pere and their children: Dusty Rhodes, Trisha Rhodes, Derek Rhodes, and Drew Rhodes; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister, Mercedes Chartier, Freedom, Wis.; and special lifelong friend, Evelyn Hoth, Green Bay.
    Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers and three sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Donna Rhodes.
    Family and friends may call Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., De Pere. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kirk Leach officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, De Pere.     Mercedes E. Chartier, Freedom, age 82, died at her home Monday February 4, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was born in Little Chute on September 22, 1930 to the late George and Lillian (Boes) Vander Velden. Merc graduated from St. John High School in 1948 and worked as a cashier at Spiegel's and in the classified ad department at the Post Crescent for several years. She married Raymond A. Chartier on August 18, 1952 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church where she was a member. He preceded her in death on November 4, 2006. After staying home to raise her family, Mercedes worked at Jack's Pizza before she and Ray owned and operated Chartier's Bar in Little Chute. They retired in 1983.
    Mercedes is survived by her children: Renee (Glen) Lamers, Poysippi; Kim (Gary) Sturm, Little Chute; Dawn (Bruce) Stone, Freedom; and Jon (Lisa) Chartier, Kaukauna; grandchildren: Sam, Shayna, Amber and Shyanne Chartier, Tonya Conrad, Stacy and Tyler Sturm, Nathan and Natasha Stone; great grandchildren: Caitlin, Brayden, Madison, Anna, Jude, Collin, Aerin and Andy; and sisters-in-law: Doris Vander Velden and Elizabeth Schmitt. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    In addition to her husband and parents, Mercedes was preceded in death by her grandsons: Jeremy, Joshua and Jason Sturm; brothers: Harold and Robert Vander Velden; sisters: Mabel (Gordon) Breier, Evelyn (Jack) Lex, Loretta (O'Neil) Rochon and Ruth (Harry) Rhodes; and sister and brother-in-law: Virginia Vander Velden and Vernon Chartier.

    Colleen C. Breier, 56, Appleton, formerly Kimberly, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton. She was born on June 22, 1958, in Appleton, daughter of Gordon Emil and Mabel Harriet (Vander Velden) Breier. Colleen was especially proud of her graduation from Plamann School, and her family was very proud of her accomplishments. Colleen enjoyed taking part in the Special Olympics, AGAPE, and ARC. Through these groups she was able to compete at the state level for Special Olympics in bocheball and bowling. Family was very important to colleen. She had a knack for remembering everyone's birthday and anniversaries. Those who knew her will remember her most for her infatuation with Donny Osmond, her extensive collection of cd's and movies, and always having a smile on her face.
    Colleen is survived by three brothers: Robert "Bob" (Jacque) Breier, Freedom; Gary (Sylvia) Breier, Kimberly; and Jeffrey (Susan) Breier, Oshkosh; seven nieces and nephews: Jon (Jeanne) Breier, Belinda (Jeff) DeGoey, Gordy Breier, Beth (Dean) Buchholz, Kurt Breier, Christopher (Carolyn) Breier, and Scott (Jennifer) Breier; eleven great nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.
    Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, and step-father: Henry Reese.
    Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 600 E. Kimberly Ave., Kimberly, with Fr. Robert Kollath officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Colleen's name.
    Colleen's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital for all their professionalism and outstanding care.
