From the Archives;" On February sixth, the Angel of Death returned to our Home for the Si ck in Elm Grove to call to her eternal reward our humble Sister Mary Calix ta Schuh after a lingering and painful illness extending over a year. Sist er suffered intensely during this time, but was ever patient and resign ed to God's holy will. Enlargement of the liver and epilepsy caused su ch severe pain toward the end that Sister had to rest day and night in a c hair. In this way only she found the slightest relief; in her chair she w as quiet and in her chair she died.
Mary Schuh was born of good Catholic parents, in February 11, 1872, at Fre edom, Wisconsin. She attended the parochial school conducted by our Siste rs at that place. Venerable Sister Justa was one of her teachers whom s he revered very much and about whom she spoke lovingly and gratefully duri ng the last weeks of her sickness. At the age of fifteen, Mary begged adm ittance into our Order, and on September 8, 1887, she received the candida te's bonnet from the hands of her loved teacher. Shortly after she was cal led to the Motherhouse, there to join the band of candidates preparing f or teaching. Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin was her first field of experienc e. Three years of training here proved the willing candidate a worthy pos tulant for reception and on July 12, 1890, we find her among the numb er of those wearing the white veil and lily crown of the novice. August 2 0, 1893 and July 20, 1901, record her temporary and perpetual vows.
Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and Huntington, Indiana, were subsequent missio ns to which Sister Calixta was assigned for school duty. It was at the la tter place that her health began to fail to such an extent that a relea se from classroom work was deemed advisable. Sister was sent to Villa Sai nt Joseph at Porter, Indiana, to recuperate. After a short stay here, s he was strong enough to resume her work again, this time in Gary, Indian a. The following school term, 1927, Sister helped out at St. Joseph's Mis sion in Milwaukee for a short time until her ailment became so serious th at she had to be removed to Elm Grove for special medical care and treatme nt. Here she entered upon the Gethsemane of her life, - a prolonged and b itter agony, but the patient sufferer never lost faith or condfidence in t he Divine Savior Who now became her Exemplar in His school of suffering.
Her one desire was to go back to school, but when she realized that this w as impossible, and that God willed otherwise, she longed and prayed that d eath would prevent her becoming a burden to her community, saying: "O Moth er, if I cannot go to school any more or be useful in some way, then I a sk to be taken away." Her prayer was heard; on February 6th, after havi ng received the rites of the Church, Sister Calixta's pure soul left her p ain-racked body and appeared before its Divine Judge, there to receive ri ch reward. May she rest in peace."
That is Sister's obituary. Sister's parents were Jacob Schuh and Mary Som mer Schuh, both natives of Germany. While her obituary states enlargeme nt of the liver, the medical examiner also included cause of death as chro nic kidney disease. Sister is buried in Elm Grove. She was close to h er 57th birthday - too young by today's standards.

Took her first vows on 7/23/1919, fin al vows on 7/16/1924, Taught schools most of her life. Then worked at S t. Joseph's Orphanage in Green Bay.
From the files of the Congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Mi lwaukee WI. ; The following hand written autobiography was found in Sist er Josepha's file;I, Sister Mary Josepha - Teresa Schuh was born April 30, 1896 at Freedo m, baptized in St, Nicholas church and named after my dear grandmothe r. On my first day at school, I sat close to my brother. The teacher ask ed my brother his name. He answered very slowly, "Ja-cup", (Jacob) Schu h. Then she asked me my name, I answered "Trace-cup Schuh" thinking that " -cup" belonged there. The teacher and pupils had some fun out of it.We had to help on the farm very much. My father owned 168 acres of clear l and. In spring and fall we had to stay home from school to work in the fie lds. When I was 17 years old I wanted to be a sister like my two Auntie s, Sister Calixta and Calasanza. Sickness prevented me until I was 19. T wo heavy operations cured me. After receiving permission from the family d octor, pastor and my parents I left for Milwaukee Aug. 1915. This was my f irst train ride. I had never seen a big city before. Homesickness was qui te hard on me for some time.In November of the same year, I was sent to Kenosha. My second year as can didate I was stationed at St. Leo's Milwaukee. At the end of this year I w as permitted to prepare for my holy vows. August 2nd 1917 I entered the No viate. My second years as novice I went to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin at Ho ly Ghost Mission. The following July 23, 1919, I was permitted to make pro fession, after which I returned to Chippewa, where I remained eight more y ears. After these eight years I was sent to St. Paul's Chicago, to ta ke up the same kind of work I was used to, First and Second grades with sa cristy work. In Feb. of that year I was transferred to Belvidere, Ill. Unt il June when I went to the motherhouse to be repaired. The following Augu st I came to Lottaville, where I still am, to take the first and second gr ades there, together with my dear church work. I would feel lost if this c harge were taken away from me. Amen.

Therese Catholic Church, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, a nd a member of the Holy Names Society. Schuh, Joseph SimonJoseph Simon Schuh, 99, Jefferson St., Oconto passed away April 7, 200 4, at his home. Joe was born Jan. 11, 1905, in Freedom, Wis., to the la te Simon and Julia (Young) Schuh. He married Mary Kempen April 23, 1936. S he preceded him in death Oct. 20, 1966. Joe farmed at Freedom, did contrac ting with Jim and Joe Young and later operated Joseph Schuh Contracti ng in Oconto until retiring in 1977. He was a lifetime member of the El ks Club, a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the Oconto Coun ty Historical Society.Survivors include two daughters Judy (Denis) Betts, Abrams; Mary Jo (Micha el) Krueger, Green Bay; two sons Thomas Schuh, Milwaukee; Patrick (Lind a) Schuh, Oconto; 13 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and two great g reat grandchildren.Joe was preceded in death by his parents his wife Mary; a son Ronald Schu h; two brothers John (Jack) Schuh, Aloysius Schuh; four sisters Agnes Vost er, Sister Mary Simplicia; Loretta Appleton and Catherine Sevick.Friends may call at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto from 4 to 9 p.m. Su nday, April 11, 2004. Her niece, Sister Simplicia lived to be an old, but a delightful senior Si ster. Sister's name was Mary and she was born on January 21, 1901 in Free dom, WI. Her parents were Simon Schuh and Julia Young Schuh. Her dad w as born in Freedom, WI and was a farmer. Her mother was born in Oconto, W isconsin. Sister has a short autobiography and an obituary as well.She writes: " I was born on January 21, 1901 in the town of Freedom, Wisco nsin, of good Catholic parents. I was the fourth of eight children. I at tended St. Nicholas School taught by our Sisters. My first inducement to enter a convent came to me on my First Communion D ay. From that time forward I prayed most fervently to know God's holy wil l. Then again when our sainted Reverend Mother Marianne paid a visit to o ur school, she picked me out from the other girls saying, that surely I w as going to be a Sister. The very thought of leaving home, parents, broth ers, sisters, friends and all seemed to discourage even the faintest fan cy of ever becoming a Sister. The encouraging letter and prayers of my de ar aunt, our deceased Sister M. Calixta and those of my cousin, Sister Jos epha, seemed to keep the tiny spark aglow. Finally, on August 27, 19 19 at the age of 18, I bid farewell to my dear ones, and entered the candi dature in Milwaukee. I was received August 3rd, 1921. Two years lat er I took my holy vows and July 28, 1929, my final vows. As candidate I was sent to Marshfield, Wisconsin and St. Elizabeth, Milwa ukee to substitute for sick Sisters. My second year of candidature was sp ent at St. Peter and Paul's, Milwaukee. As novice, my mission field was a gain Marshfield where I labored for 4 years, then obedience called me to S t. Michael. Milwaukee and from there to my present place in Lancaster, Wis consin."
The autobiography was written probably in 1927. That was the year that Si ster was in Lancaster. Her obituary gives more of her story.
"Sister Simplicia died on December 22, 1986 of emphysema, less than a mon th before her 86th birthday, during the time when the Christmas decoratio ns she had made for 2 East were brightening the corridors. The golden wre aths were a reminder of her many craft-filled years when, as Sister Lucil le Converset reminded us at the wake, "It seems she could make something o ut of nothing...She was always busy working for others, making and doing t hings for them." She did things like making scapulars and Sacred Heart ba dges for prisoners and the elderly. and a "Family Circus" cartoon scrapbo ok for the pediatrics department of a hospital. Before coming to Notre Dame Health Care Center, where she served from 19 70 to 1980 as sacristan and occupational therapy aide, she had spent 47 ye ars teaching in the primary grades, occasionally adding 4th grade as wel l. Her longest periods of service were at St. Clement, Lancaster, St. Pat rick, Menasha and Our Lady of Lourdes, Rice Lake, WI. Sister Simplicia retired to Visitation in Elm Grove in 1980, but return ed to the Health Care Center as patient in 1984.At the homily during her Mass of Christian burial, Father Erwin Matt recal led her years as sacristan of the Holy Family Chapel. "It was not just th at her artistic nature gloried in the beauty of God's house and exult ed in her role of set designer and wardrobe mistress for the drama of t he liturgy, it was something deeper. It was her realization that this w as God's house and that she as sacristan, was taking the place of Mar y. a role that would be especially delightful to any woman who bore the ti tle of Notre Dame Sister."Father also spoke of light. "The true light that enlightens everyone w ho comes into the world" (John 1:9) and of Sister Simplicia "whose life w as centered in Jesus who is light" and of the fact that she was no strang er to darkness.In recent years, Sister had endured waning sight, eye surgery and eventu al darkness again. as emphysema drained her strength. "In the darkness th at was her lot," Father said, "she was the epitome of patience, fortitu de and trust. The love that had prompted all her religious life and all h er activities remained as strong as she became physically weak.Against the dark background of her suffering, the light that was Jesus cou ld be more readily seen. Thus, especially in the dark moments of her lif e, we could experience the promise of Jesus: 'I am the light of the world .' Amen."I recall Sister being the same size as her cousin, Sister Josepha. They d id visit with each other, especially prior to Josepha's illness and deat h. Often people took them for sisters rather than cousins. Both were art istic, but Josepha came to retirement with an illness that did leave her m uch energy. Simplicia was always creating things and believe me, she cou ld make the most lovely things and almost out of nothing. A lot of scra ps turned out to be her treasures and she transformed them. She truly h ad a gift for that. 1986 was a hard year for her. She wanted to do so mu ch, but poor eyesight and loss of breath kept her to her room. She was al ways happy for some short visits, however.
I did not realize that both of these Sisters had aunts in the congregatio n. They did not speak much of the past. They both were too interest ed in their present and the people who were with them at the time.

Aloysius P. Schuh "Wiss" N4420 State Road 55 Kaukauna Age 87, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2000 at Anna John Nursing Home. Wiss was born April 15, 1912 in Freedom, son of the late Simon and Julia (Young) Schuh. On November 26, 1936, Wiss married the former Genevieve Schmidt in Hollandtown; she preceded him in death on November 8, 1994. Wiss operated a dairy farm in Freedom for many years, and also worked for Stokely Van Camp.
He was a faithful member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, and over the years enjoyed many hobbies, including playing cards, deer hunting, fishing, and wood working. He always treasured his time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As a young man, he and his brother, Ignatius built barns in the Darboy and Sherwood areas. Gust worked in area cheese factories in the early 1930's and on July 17, 1933 he obtained his "Wisconsin Cheesemakers License."On June 13, 1934 he married Agnes Marie DeBruin in St. John Catholic Church in Little Chute, Wisconsin. They lived in Kaukauna and shared 50 years of marriage before she passed away on June 15, 1984, two days after their golden anniversary. Gust worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company for 40 years until his retirement in 1975. He was the lead janitor of the lower mill. During his years at the mill, he took great pride in his work, both indoors and out. Gust was an avid gardener who raised a wide variety of vegetables and flowers. Anyone who walked by his home was sure to notice his lovely flowerbed. He supplied the altar flowers for many special occasions at Holy Cross Catholic Church. His Madonna and Regal liliesw ere beyond compare. He loved sharing his produce with the family and neighbors. He and Agnes loved playing with their children and later their grandchildren. They taught their children and grandchildren many card games, especially cribbage. He was dealt a "perfect" hand twice while playing at his son's house. Gust was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the Thilmany Quarter Century Club.Gust and Agnes brought six children into this world, five boys and a girl, who survive him: James and Rosemary Schuh, Freedom and their seven children: Julie (Tony) Roskom, Jeanne (George) Garrity, Jackie (Andy) Meschisen, Jeff (Megan) Schuh, Jill Jones, Janiece (Ken) Zastrow, and Jon Schuh; John and Sharon Schuh, Kaukauna and their four children: Brian (Tara) Schuh, Kurt (Gloria) Schuh, Ellen Schuh and Ann (Sean) McDaniel; Richard and Margaret Schuh, Texas and their four children: Steve Schuh, Debbie (Pat) McCarthy, Ken (Pam) Schuh and Ron (Amy) Schuh; Charles and Barbara Schuh, Kaukauna and their three children: Joe (Heidi) Schuh, Nick (Diane) Schuh and Karen (Greg) Hartjes; Mary and Gerald Van Domelen, Kaukauna and their two children: Jason (Cheryl) Kelly-Van Domelen and Laura Van Domelen and Martin and Susan Schuh, Kaukauna and their two children: Ben Schuh and Josh (Brook) Schuh. Peter Joseph Schuh Jr., Freedom, age 95, passed away on August 13, 2009. He was born at home in Freedom, WI, on October 3, 1913. He was the son of the late Peter Schuh Sr. and Anna (Schmitt) Schuh. Peter and Lucille E. (Blank) were married on June 7, 1945, in Neenah. Peter lived on and farmed the homestead farm (est. 1866) all of his life. The farm located on Center Valley Rd. has had the Schuh name on the mail box for 143 years.
Peter was an active member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom. He was an usher starting in 1942 and later a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1948, first in the Kaukauna Council then in 1982 became a charter member of the Father Peters Council #8061 in Freedom. Peter became a 4th Degree member and was part of the Honor Guard. In 1956, he was a member and stock holder in the newly organized Freedom Volunteer Fire Department. Peter was also active in the Freedom Golden Agers and volunteered weekly at Anna Johns nursing home, Oneida. In 1966, he received the Century Farm Award from the State of Wisconsin and in 1980 received a county conservation award for 25 years of participation. Peter and his wife Lucille enjoyed traveling. They were in most of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. They also made it to Europe and the Holy Land. His favorite pastime was playing Sheepshead and Scrabble and helping out the children.
Survivors include the love of his life Lucille (Blank) Schuh, three sons and four daughters: Alice (Don) Bougie, De Pere, their children Jeff, (Nikki) Bougie and their children Gavin and Hunter; Randy Bougie (Lisa) and their children Addison and Hayden; Rebecca (Chad) Bass and their children Brandon, Brady, Brock; Peter (Cindy) Schuh, Freedom, their children Lisa (Joe) Vickman and their daughter Alison, and Jason Schuh; Arnold Schuh (Killed in Action in Vietnam Oct. 20, 1969); Lydia Smith, Kaukauna, and her children Chalyce, Brandon (Nicole) and their son Cole and Kyle Smith; Chris (Jerry) Vanden Heuvel, Kaukauna, and their children Todd (Amy), Dan and son Riley and Dave Vanden Heuvel; Greg (Connie) Schuh, Freedom, their children Melissa, Aaron, Tiffany, and Marcus U.S. Marine Corp; Steve (Doris) Schuh, Freedom, and their children Scott (Ann) and their children Jaden, Justice, Deni (Denny) Dobson and their children Cody and Griffin, Dana (Matt) Harcus, Derek Schuh, Jennifer (Ayron) Otto and their child Dakota, Joshua Schuh, Samantha Schuh; Laura (Joe) Schumacher, Hortonville and their children Justin and Phillip, his sister, Calixta Vosters and brother, Arthur Sr. (Millie) Schuh, a sister-in-law Lucille Schuh, and numerous nieces and nephews. Schuh, Rev. EarlRev. Earl Schuh , 88, Green Bay, died Tuesday afternoon, December 27, 200 5, at a local nursing home following a long illness. Born in Freedo m, WI on April 24, 1917 he is the son of the late Peter and Anna (Schmit t) Schuh. He graduated from St. Nicholas Elementary School in Freedom.He then attended the Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz and St. John Semi nary in Collegeville, MN and was ordained on May 29, 1943 by Bishop Pa ul P. Rhode at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral of Green Bay. Father Schuh's f irst appointment was as an Assistant at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral of Gr een Bay (1943-1948). He then served as Assistant at St. Anthony Parish, Oc onto Falls (1948); Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Kimberly (1948-1952); and S t. Mary Parish, Oshkosh (1952-1957). Father Schuh was appointed Past or of St. Anthony Parish, Tigerton (1957-1960); Holy Martyrs of Gorcum Par ish, Green Bay (1960-1968); and SS. Peter & Paul Parish, Green Bay (1968-1 993). He also served as a member of the Priest's Personnel Board (1993) a nd the Presbyteral Council (1997).Father Schuh retired from active priestly ministry in June 30, 1992 and h as been Pastor Emeritus at SS. Calixta Vosters, Kaukauna, was surrounded by the love of her family as she made her final journey to heaven on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Her children were at her side in her final moments on Earth until the angels guided her to her new home where she was greeted by her husband Andrew, grandson Steve, her parents, brothers and sisters and many relatives. Calixta was born Feb. 13, 1919 in Freedom, Wisconsin the daughter of the late Peter and Anna (Schmitt) Schuh. On November 13, 1947, Calixta married Andrew Vosters with whom she spent the next 58 years of her life. Together they raised a family of five on their farm in the town of Grand Chute. They spent 30 happy years on the farm, where Calixta always had home cooked meals, bread or cookies in the oven and a stocked candy box. Her love of cooking and sharing a meal is a tradition that lives on in all three of her daughters. You could never leave her house without having something to eat. Every meal ended with "Here, have more, or finish it". You always left feeling like you ate too much. She always had beautiful flower gardens and a large vegetable garden while living on the farm. In 1991 Calixta and Andrew sold the farm and built a new home where they shared many wonderful years of retirement, visiting relatives and friends and playing cards until Andrew's passing in 2006.
Calixta's life revolved around her family, and for her, anything was a reason for a gathering. Celebrating Christmas, the many birthdays and summer baseball parties were just some of the reasons to get together. Calixta and Andrew's love grew from five children to 22 grandchildren to 28 great-grandchildren and counting. Calixta loved holding all those newborn babies. Everyone always enjoyed the molasses cookies at Mom or Grandma's house. Calixta loved playing cards, watching the birds, talking on the phone, and visiting with family and friends. Even as Calixta's health failed her, she played a mean game of 500 Rummy.
Calixta's faith was always at the center of her life. Mom and Dad would lead a daily rosary with their children as they were growing up. They always celebrated their anniversary with Mass followed with dinner. She was a member of St John Catholic Church in Little Chute, a past member of the St. Elizabeth Society, a lifetime member of Father Solanus Guild, the Scapular Militia and the Sacred Heart League. She had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and her rosary was always at her side.

Arthur Leo Schuh, age 91, died peacefully on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Central Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin.
Art was born on April 24, 1923 in Freedom, Wisconsin the son of the late Peter and Anna (Schmitt) Schuh. He was a Freedom High School graduate. Following high school Art moved to Washington DC and worked for the Civil Service Department before he entered the military. Art proudly served his country with the Army Air Corps 1252 Squadron in Casablanca French Morocco. Following his military service Art was united in marriage to Mildred R. Mayer on November 27, 1952 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton. He was formerly employed with the Hoffer Glass and Paint Company of Appleton in sales for several years. Art also was a very active member of the Appleton Evening Lions club and St. Thomas More Catholic Parish where he was a member. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, cribbage and playing sheephead with family and friends.
Art is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Millie, and their three children, Arthur (Cheryl) Schuh and their son, Michael, Iron River; Diane (Paul) Boucher and their daughters, Amanda and Abby Boucher, Greenville; and Thomas (Stephanie) Schuh and their daughter, Roxanna Schuh, Appleton; a brother-in-law, Robert (Willodene) Mayer, Germantown; and a sister-in-law, Marion Christel, Kiel; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives, neighbors and friends. Art was preceded in death by his parents, ten siblings and a brother-in-law.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a m on Monday, March 30, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, 1810 N McDonald Street, Appleton with the Rev. Gerald Falk and the Rev. James Lucas con-celebrating. Military Honors will follow the service at the church. Entombment will be in the Star of Hope Mausoleum, Appleton. Art's family will receive relatives and friends at the church on Monday from 9:00 am until 10:45 a m. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established for Appleton Evening Lions Club of Appleton.

Romenesko, Rosemary Mrs. Kenneth
Rosemary, age 82, of Appleton, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Brewster Village. She was born September 12, 1927, in Appleton, daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Brooks) DeJong. She was a graduate of Freedom High School. Following graduation from Kaukauna Normal, she taught at Woodside Elementary School. She married Kenneth Romenesko June 8, 1948, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, sharing 61 years together.
Rosemary was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and the St. Bernard Ladies Rosary Club. She volunteered at St. Therese and St. Piux X Catholic Schools; was President of St. Therese Ladies Society and did volunteer work at the church; she was a former member of the Fox Valley Golf Club and Butte Des Morts Country Club where she achieved a "hole in one" on the 5th hole. She was an avid Bridge player; a good seamstress; and enjoyed winters in Arizona where she met many friends. She always appreciated the many friends she made while living at Touchmark.
Rosemary is survived by her husband, Ken; a daughter and son-in-law: Sue and Jim Knapstein, Appleton; a son and daughter-in-law: Terry and Connie Romenesko, Neenah; two sisters: Betty Hietpas, Kaukauna; Ardene Welhouse, Kaukauna; a brother and sister-in-law: Frank and Joyce DeJong, Pound; five grandchildren: Kari (Landon) Schultz; Kelly (Steve) Sathre; Rebecca Bresser; Tyler Romenesko and Brady Romenesko; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert, and a brother, Corneal.
Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., with Rev. Justin Werner officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established for COTS and the Emergency Shelter of the Fox Valley.

Betty A. Hietpas, age 84, of Kaukauna, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015 with her family by her side. She was born to the late Jacob and Mary (Brooks) De Jong on November 4, 1930. She married the late Don Hietpas on August 19, 1953.
Betty enjoyed spending her retirement time in Eagle River with her husband before he passed away. She loved to bake, cook, play cards, and sing in the church and villa choirs. Betty was a member of Knights of Columbus with her husband and Fox Valley Golf Club. She was an avid bingo player. Betty loved watching sports, especially the Brewers and Packers. She enjoyed spending time with all of her family.

Ardene T. Welhouse, age 78, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born December 14, 1932, in Freedom to the late Jacob and Mary (Brooks) DeJong. On April 30, 1953, Ardene married Roland J. Geurts at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom. Together, they had four daughters. Roland preceded her in death in March of 1970 after sharing 17 years of marriage. In 1978, Ardene married Edward "Eddie" Welhouse at St. Aloysius Catholic Church; the union joined two families together. The couple enjoyed 30 years of marriage together prior to his death on December 7, 2008. Ardene enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing sheepshead and polka dancing. She was a wonderful seamstress. Ardene was a very active member of St. Aloysius Church being instrumental in the planning of funeral lunches, The Ladies VFW, Hospital Auxiliary, TOPS Club and the Catholic Knights.

Francis "Frank" W. DeJong, 77, passed away unexpectedly on December 12, 2012 at Appleton Medical Center. Frank was born on January 11, 1935 to Jacob and Mary (Brooks) DeJong in Freedom. He graduated from the Freedom High School in 1952 and St. Norbert College in 1956 where he excelled in football. On April 25, 1970 he was united in marriage to Joyce Gogolewski, and they spent 42 wonderful years together. Frank was an accountant for several firms until his retirement in 2002. He was a co-founder of the Freedom Athletic Association and umpired many games in the Freedom area. Frank was an avid bowler, golfer and fisherman and a Packer fan. He also enjoyed playing cards and dominos. Most of all Frank loved spending time with his family and friends at the cottage in Pound or attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was also a volunteer at the Oconto Falls Hospital.
Frank is survived by his wife Joyce, three sons; Greg (Tracy) DeJong, Kaukauna, Jeff DeJong, Kaukauna, and Steven (Billie Jo) DeJong, Freedom, six grandchildren, Tia, Lili, Jayce, Kristen, Brittney and Danielle, a sister Betty Hietpas, brothers-in-law, Ken Romenesko, and Bob (Mary) Gogolewski, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings; Rosie Romenesko, Corneal DeJong, and Ardene (Ed) Welhouse, and a brother-in-law Don Hietpas.
The funeral liturgy for Frank will be held on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna with Fr Tom Pomeroy officiating. A time of visitation will be held at the Church on Monday, December 17, 2012 from 9:00 AM until the time of the Mass.

Mary M. Kelpinski, age 88, of Appleton, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Mary was born on July 1, 1922, in Five Corners, Outagamie County, to the late Jake and Genevieve (Van Asten) Schuh. She married Merlin E. Kelpinski on September 20, 1944; he survives. Mary was employed in the Sears Catalog Department in Appleton for over 42 years, retiring in 1984. She was a well-known volunteer at St. Elizabeth Hospital and St. Joseph Catholic Church kitchen. Mary enjoyed card playing and was a member of several card clubs and, together with Merlin, enjoyed square dancing and had many happy years at their cottage in Waupaca.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Merlin; her children, David (Anita) Kelpinski, Dianna Kelpinski, Dan Kelpinski and Debbie (Dave) Ganzen; her grandchildren, Rick (Lynn) Kelpinski, Dawn (Ken) Marquardt, Kelly Ganzen and John Ganzen; her great-grandchildren, Kristina Marquardt and Casey and Lindsay Kelpinski; her brothers, Don (Pat) Schuh, Roger (Nancy) Schuh, Gene (Bernadette) Schuh, Vern (Ann) Schuh; and her sister, Glady (Harry) Vanden Boogardt.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Schuh.

Rita T. Tessen, Town of Vandenbroek, age 92, died Sunday, October 29, 2017 at the American Grand. She was born in Freedom on December 31, 1924 to the late Fred and Catherine (Meulemans) Schuh. Rita married Leland Tessen on June 19, 1947. She enjoyed traveling, painting by numbers, caring for her plants and researching ancestory. Rita was a loving mom and loved all of her Godchildren, nieces and nephews as well as her dogs, Skipper, Tiny and Penny.
Rita is survived by her son, Kenneth of Town of Vandenbroek; brothers: James Schuh and Ted Schuh; brothers-in-law: Leonard Tessen and Jerry Smith; and six God children. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Cecilia A. Smet, age 90, of Sherwood, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2016. She was born on March 27, 1926 to the late Fred and Catherine (Meulemans) Schuh. She married Joseph Smet on April 8, 1948 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, Wisconsin. Together Ceil and Joe operated their family dairy farm for the majority of their marriage.
Ceil worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital as a candy striper before her marriage. After she married, she was a full-time devoted wife and mother. She lived her life giving to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren always knew that Grandma would have chocolate chip cookies and suckers when they arrived for visits. Ceil was known for always putting everyone's needs before her own.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church as well as the Saint Ann Society. She enjoyed her weekly Sherwood Ladies Bowling League, playing Sheepshead with friends and family, crocheting and needle point.

The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, N 369 Military Road in Sherwood. Visitation will be held on Friday starting at 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Ceil's name. Virginia L. Martin, 88, died Sunday, August 16, 2015 at her home in Wayside Parkview Estates.
She was born April 25, 1927 in Freedom, WI to the late Fred and Katherine Meulemans Schuh. She married Joe Martin on May 13, 1948 at Freedom, WI. He preceded her in death on March 16, 2011. Virginia was a graduate of Freedom High School. She was an accomplished baker, including making wedding cakes for family and friends and ice cream pails of cookies for the grandchildren. She partnered with Joe in the operation of their dairy farm in the Town of Morrison. They enjoyed polka dancing with the "We Love to Dance Club" and after their retirement, traveled extensively throughout the United States.

Dolores "Dee" Smith (Schuh), age 73, of Arbor Vitae, passed away at her home in the beautiful northwoods on Friday, April 15 surrounded by her loving family. Dee was born on November 28, 1937, in Freedom (Appleton), Wisconsin, to Fred and Catharine (Meulemans) Schuh. She married Gerry (Gerald) Smith on August 17, 1957, and they settled in Wausau to raise their family. They retired to their beautiful cabin in the northwoods in 1991 where they enjoyed twenty wonderful years surrounded by nature, enjoying gardening, swimming, hiking, biking, canoeing and cross-country skiing. Their passion for nature also led them on many travels throughout the United States in their camper. Dee treasured the simple joys of life: nature, flowers, snowflakes, sunsets, children and time spent with family and friends.

Kenneth H. Schuh, age 86, of Kimberly, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Kenneth was born to the late John and Othelia (Obarska) Schuh, at home in Kimberly, on September 14, 1928. He attended Holy Name Catholic Grade School and graduated from Kimberly High School. After High School, he served in the Army from 1946 until 1948, where he was a Medical Aid in Korea. He returned home to begin his 44-year career at Kimberly Mill. Shortly after he returned from service, he met the love of his life, Johanna Cops. The two wed at Holy Name Catholic Church on May 26, 1951. He and his father built his home in Kimberly, and later his cottage in Winneconne, where he spent his most treasured time. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and whenever he had a child on his lap, he was the happiest. He always enjoyed a family gathering, whether it be at home or at the cottage. He was a loyal member of Holy Name Catholic Church. He and Annie faithfully volunteered at St. Paul Home for 24 years. In 2003 they were selected volunteers of the year.

Judith "Judy" Ann Betts, 76, of Abrams, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016 at her home. She was born January 6, 1940 to the late Joseph and Mary (Kempen) Schuh. Judy married Denis Betts on January 30, 1959. He preceded her in death on September 26, 2012. Judy taught 3rd grade at Abrams Elementary for 28 years. After retirement she continued to substitute teach for several years. Judy loved socializing, spending time with people and being a part of Friends of Abrams. She was a member of Safe Haven Community Church, Pound.

Freedom - Jerry S. Schuh, age 80, of Freedom, passed away as the result of a tragic automobile accident on December 10, 2017. He was born on June 12, 1937, son of the late Aloysius and Genevieve (Schmidt) Schuh. On October 4, 1958, he married Beverly Coenen. He and Bev were blessed with 59 wonderful years together and five children.
Jerry had a long and successful career at Miller Electric holding many positions including manager of Tech Sales eventually retiring in 1999 as an account executive. His work took him all over the world and through the years Bev was able to accompany him on many trips. In addition to his career at Miller he also owned Schuh TV and Scrambler Sales visiting many area homes to the pleasure of parents and children alike when the TV worked again!
Jerry could fix anything, even if it meant "Jerry-rigging" it. To this day family and friends still relied on him to help with any project. Jerry was well-known as a prankster and found great joy in pulling a fast one. In his younger years he enjoyed playing sports rising to the level of semi-pro football for the Manitowoc Chiefs and in 1997 was inducted into the semi-pro football hall of fame.
Jerry was very involved in his community. He was an honorary member of the Freedom Fire Department, currently serving on their board of directors. He was also a very active member of the Freedom Lions Club. Most important to Jerry was his family. He was most happy when spending time with family and friends.

Daniel J. Schuh, formerly of Freedom, age 69, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Kenosha Memorial Hospital. He was born January 20, 1940, in Freedom son of the late Aloysius and Genevieve (Schmidt) Schuh. Dan married his high school sweetheart and love of his life the former Dolly Butler in Freedom on August 10, 1961. She preceded him in death in 1986. He retired from AMC Chrysler/Daimler in 1988. Dan continued his football legend after his high school years by playing semi-pro football with the Racine Raiders for several years. He was an avid bowler, loved cooking and gardening and also charter fishing. Post retirement time was spent with his close friend Dot. Dan spent much of the last year and a half with special friend Trish enjoying a favorite game pinochle. He will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by his son, Daniel J. Schuh Jr., Milwaukee and his beloved friend, Kristina Beck and her son Blake, Milwaukee, brothers and sisters: Jerry (Bev) Schuh, Merle (Sharon) Schuh, Betty (Carl) Evers, Jean (Allan) Tiedt, Darlene (Daryl) Haase, Bill (Lynda) Schuh, Pat (Alan) Hansen, Joyce (Alan) Garvey, Dave (Kay) Schuh, Rick (Carolyn) Schuh, Nancy (Randy) Smith, Joe (Darla) Schuh, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charlotte A. Boone, age 82, passed away on December 15, 2012, at Brewster Village with her family by her side. She was born on November 28, 1930, in Appleton, the daughter of Clarence and Margaret (Paltzer) Schuh. She graduated from Appleton High School. Charlotte was united in marriage to Gerald Boone on October 4, 1956 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton. Charlotte's lifelong hobby and passion was music. She taught accordion lessons at Hager Music, and later taught piano and keyboard lessons at Henry's Music and out of her home. Charlotte played in many bands, starting with The Blue Notes and her last gigs were with The Geriatric Jazz. Charlotte also enjoyed singing in the choir at St. Pius X with her friends. She thought it was very important to acknowledge all of her friends and family's birthdays, sometimes using homemade cards with the flowers that she photographed. Charlotte loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Charlotte is survived by her husband, Gerald of 56 years, two children, Darryl (Jane) Boone and Renee (Don) O'Malley, five grandchildren, Katie, Shelly, Mason, Joel and Marty, one great-granddaughter, Hailey, one brother, David (Rosemary) Schuh, one sister, Barb (Ron) Murphy, one sister-in-law, Sherrill Kleinhans, and two aunts, Marce Paltzer and Elaine Brandt. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Andy Schuh, one brother-in-law, Burl "Buzzy" Boone, further preceded by many aunts and uncles.

She married William A. "Bill" Herrick II on August 5th, 1952 and resided in Appleton, Wisconsin. Ginny is survived by husband Bill and their six children: Lynn, Jeff, Susan, Kathryn, William "Bill" III, and Paul; fifteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Don Schuh, age 67, passed away from complications of diabetes at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Don was born in Green Bay on May 18, 1943, son of the late Sylvester and LaVern (Puls) Schuh, and for the past several years had been a Green Bay resident.
He is survived by four sisters: Doris (Gene) Gilbert of Green Bay; Jan (Ron) Conrad of Appleton; Connie (Tom) Latimer of Appleton; and Lisa (Eric) Kramer of Appleton. There are also many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and by his dear friend and companion Janet Gamache.
A family memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, and Don will be buried at Highland Memorial Park.

Dolores M. Thiel, 92, of Hilbert, died on October 6, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. She was born September 18, 1925, in the Town of Harrison, daughter of Peter and Caroline (Van Wychen) Scherer. On May 17, 1949, she married Harold G. Thiel at Sacred Heart Church in Sherwood.
Dolores was a member of St. John Sacred Heart Church in St. John and practiced her faith every second of every day. Within her church, she offered her time with the Christian Mothers, Daughters of Isabella, the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and she was always willing to cook for funerals or clean altar linens. Dolores was also a Eucharistic Minister and a charter member of the St. John Adult Choir. Dolores was a catechist for many years for confirmation classes. Her devotion to giving to others led her to volunteer at the St. Joe's Food Pantry and at the Salvatorian Center in New Holstein.
Her favorite role was that of a wife and mother on the family farm. She preferred driving her John Deere 4020 because it had a cab. Running her household taught her a mastery of the kitchen. Dolores was a fabulous cook and loved baking cookies, breads, and pies. Dolores also knew how to have fun. She enjoyed square dancing and playing Sheepshead, and she was part of the Ladies Bowling League for many years.
Dolores is survived by her sons: Gary (Jeanie) Thiel, and Alan (Michelle) Thiel; her grandchildren: Andrea (Kevin) Svoboda, Nicole (Aaron) Keim, Vanessa Thiel, and Hayden Thiel; her great-grandchildren: Clara Svoboda, Audrey Svoboda, and Henry Keim; her brother: Donald (Adeline) Scherer; her brothers-in-law: Ralph (Alice) Steiner, and Leon (Carol) Thiel; her sister-in-law: Martha Thiel; and many nieces and nephews.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents: Peter and Caroline Scherer; her infant son: Dennis Thiel; her granddaughter: Angela Thiel; her mother-in-law and father-in-law: Math and Jeanette Thiel; her sister-in-law: Margaret Thiel; and her brothers-in-law: Cyril Thiel, Melvin Thiel, Eugene Thiel, and Fr. Dwayne "Cowboy" Van Wychen, 72, Mountain, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Harbor House in Sheboygan. The son of the late Henry and Correne (Bowers) Van Wychen was born June 24, 1939, in Kaukauna.
Mr. Van Wychen graduated from Wrightstown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an iron worker and owned and operated Cowboy's Corral Bar in Mountain. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Dwayne loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, Vicki (Dave) King, Tim (fianee, Lynn Christensen) Van Wychen, Troy (Kim) Van Wychen, Lisa (Dave) Piper, Richard Kennedy, Denise Baldwin; Cowboy's grandchildren, Lenora, Cody, David, Jr., Madeline, Elizabeth, Brennan, Sydney, Zach, Seth, Shilo, Valeen, Robert; and two great-grandchildren, Shay and Sadie. In addition, he is survived by his siblings, Margaret (Robert) Duescher, Ruth (Herbert) Kalies and Kenneth (Mary) Van Wychen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Correne (Bowers) Van Wychen; and his wife, Madonna.

Frank Clement Schuh, 81, Pulaski, died Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at home. He had fought a courageous battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. The son of the late Clem and Lucille (Vanden Plas) Schuh was born in Green Bay on July 11, 1935. The family moved to Pulaski shortly after his birth, where he lived until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Frank proudly served his country from February 18, 1958, until January 25, 1960.
Frank married his first love, Janet DeFrance, on May 1, 1958, and they raised their family on a dairy farm in Kunesh until she passed away in 1988. He married his second love, Rosella Drewiske, on December 6, 1996. Frank was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Bona Council #4439 and Assumption B.V.M. Parish. A devout Catholic, he traveled to Oshkosh to the Jesuit Retreat House 16 years in a row, and took part in many Cursillo retreats. Frank worked on the paper machines at Fort Howard Paper Company for 36 years.
Survivors include his wife, Rosella; his six children: Barbara (Thomas) Zahn, Oneida, Susan (Scott) Simoens, Pulaski, Joseph (Genell) Schuh, Raleigh, NC, Diane (Mark) Myers, Madison, Mike Schuh, Pulaski, and Thomas (Carrie) Schuh, Browntown; 19 grandchildren: Courtney, Cassandra, and Brett Zahn, David (Kelsey) and Kevin Simoens, Nicholas, Jordan, Gabrielle, and Hannah Schuh, Katherine, Anna, Benjamin, and Jacob Myers, Alexandria, Michaela, and Riley Schuh, Brady, Christian, and Noah Schuh; Rose's five children: Frank (Sara) Drewiske, Green Bay, Joe (Linda) Drewiske, De Pere, Jerry (Tina) Drewiske, Green Bay, Jim (Donna) Drewiske, Green Bay, and Pat (Nancy) Drewiske, Oconto; Rose's nine grandchildren: Doug (Shannon) Drewiske, Danielle (Justin) Raska, Derek (Katie) Drewiske, Brian, Tim, and Tom Drewiske, Marshall, Brittany, and Kimberly Drewiske; Rose's five great grandchildren: Carter, Emerson, and Primm Rose, Lucas, and Baby "D." Frank was preceded in death by his father, Clem, in 1998, his mother, Lucille, in 2015, and his first wife, Janet, in 1988.
Friends may call at Assumption B.V.M. Church, 119 E. Pulaski Street, Pulaski, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, Closing Prayer Service and KC's Service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation continues after 10:00 a.m. Monday at the church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Fr. Patrick Gawrylewski, O.F.M. presiding. Military honors will be provided by the Pulaski Area Veterans. Entombment will follow at Allouez Catholic Mausoleum.
The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Ruth Warren and the staff of Green Bay Oncology, the staff of St. Mary's Hospital in One Day Surgery, and the staff of Heartland Hospice for their compassion, support, and tender loving care. We especially wish to recognize his hospice nurse, Katie, his CNA, Jennifer, his social worker, Jennifer B., his registered nurse, Heidi, and his spiritual caregivers, William and Fr. Patrick.

Lucille Katherine (Schuh) Strojny, after a dignified battle with Alzheimers, joined the angels surrounded by her loving family on March 8. Born in Kunesh to Clem and Lucille (VandenPlas) Schuh on July 10, 1937.
Lucille is survived by her husband, Bill, whom she met at Marinette Teachers College. They married on November 27, 1958. They have 7 children: Dolores Strojny, Theresa (Kevin) Rippe, Arlene (Jeff) Goodrich, Rose (Duane) Kuske, Mary Beth (Richard Balch), Mark Strojny and Carol Strojny (Steve Gebauer). She is further survived by her siblings: Mary (Jim) DeFrance, JoAnne (Jim) Reimer, David (Margaret) Schuh, Martin (Joann) Schuh, Roger (Elise) Schuh, Linda (Jim) Krouse, Bonnie (Earl) Spencer and Joyce (Alan) Kabara; sister-in-law, Rose Schuh; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Awaiting her arrival in heaven are her parents; brother, Frank; mother-in-law and father-in-law; 2 sisters-in-law; and 2 nieces.
Lucille will be remembered for her baking skills and beautiful gardens perfected by her certification as a Master Gardener. Many brides and bridesmaids wore dresses altered by her loving hands. Students went home with new skills after her classes on upholstery and canning. She spun, dyed and knitted wool. Lucille was a "Jane of all trades" and mastered them all.
It takes a village to raise a child and a village to care for an Alzheimer's sufferer. We would like to thank our "village"; all of our friends, family and neighbors with helping out with so many tasks too numerous to mention and a special thanks to Unity Hospice for all the care they have given to Lucille and our family.
Visitation will be at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 3425 Willow Rd., from 8:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Monday, March 12, 2018. Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Church with Rev. Daniel Viertel officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.Prokowall.com.
