Appleton - Owen "Butch" Hughes went to his reward July 18, 2018 at aged 89. He was the son of the late Owen and Appolonia (Fermanich); and was preceded in death by his brothers Harold, Cliff, Leo, and Tom; his sisters Margaret, Florence and Lillian; his son-in-law Mike Earl; and many life-long friends especially "Pete" Peterson, "Bud" Barber, and Ruth Rucks. He is survived by his former wife of 53 years, Mary Jane (Greunke), and his sister Gertrude (Frank) Sprister as well as his children, Ed (Bobbalee) Hughes, Lynn (Tom Reitzner) Hughes, Angie (Dennis) Eppinger, Mary Sue Earl, Amy (Bob) Sanders, Chris (Tracy Romano) Hughes, and Erich (Marca) Hughes, grandchildren Margaret, Andy, Aaron, Sarah, Sam, Daphne, Marlo and great-grandchildren Tony, Patrick, Hendrick, Harrison, and Wren. He leaves behind many friends including his baseball partners Bob Ebben and Ed Gehrke.
Owen was a natural storyteller, gifted singer, bowler, baseball player, and student of the English language. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family camping throughout Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula, and South Dakota and on annual trips to Errington's Resort on Star Lake.
He graduated from St. Therese Catholic Grade School and from Appleton High School. He started playing baseball in grade school and, while in high school, he played for Appleton's Legion Baseball team. He was instrumental in driving home the winning runs for the state Legion championship in 1944. He started out as a Cub's fan until the Braves left Boston for Milwaukee. He was a season ticket holder for the Packers and could recall the days when other football franchises paid the Packers' travel expenses for away games.
As a child, he was responsible for fetching water from the well in the backyard on Kenilworth Avenue, and his strong work ethic carried him through 45 years with Riverside Paper Company, advancing to be one of the mill's few boiler technicians.
In his retirement, he worked part time, and maintained many birdfeeders, often used by squirrels, possums, and raccoons. He loved music and was a member of several church choirs. He sang at area nursing homes, the Thompson Center and Senior citizen clubs in the Fox Valley and was a member of the Hallelujah Gospel Choir.
He was a great neighbor and could be counted on to help in almost any circumstance. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In passing he joins his grade school friend James Williamson, who liked to remind him, "Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis".

    Obituary:
Geenen, Sister Mary James (Alice Margaret Mary)
Sister Mary James (Alice Margaret Mary) Geenen entered Eternal Life February 20, 2012, the third child of Henry R. Geenen and Gladys Catherine (McCormick) Geenen. She was born March 31, 1919 in Freedom. She attended Saint Nicholas Elementary School. After graduating from high school she attended Saint Norbert College and Silver Lake College where she earned a BA Degree in Elementary Education with majors in Philosophy and English. She attended the University of Dayton earning a MS Degree in Elementary Education.
Sister Mary James took religious vows on August 15, 1946 with the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, Manitowoc. She changed her community affiliation to the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady on December 8, 1981. Sister celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Religious on August 15, 1996.
Sister Mary James served as a teacher in the Diocese of Green Bay at: Sacred Heart, Oshkosh; Saint Mary, Algoma; Saint Wendell, Cleveland; Saint Anthony, Neopit; Saint Aloysius, Kaukauna; Saint Paul, Manitowoc; Saint Mary, Kaukauna; Chilton Catholic, Chilton; Saint John, Seymour: In the Diocese of Superior; Saint Joseph, Rice Lake. In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee: Saint Mary, Waukesha; Holy Spirit, Milwaukee. In the Diocese of Steubenville: Ohio; Saint Nicholas, Zanesville: In Michigan: Saint Anne, Menominee.
Throughout her teaching career, Sister Mary James continued her education, earning credits from the University of Wisconsin, Manitowoc, and the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh; the University of Dayton, Ohio. Sister held the following licenses: Elementary Teacher K-8 from the State of Wisconsin and from the State of Ohio-Elementary Teacher K-8, Supervisor and Administrator. During her teaching career she continued to maintain Advanced Certification in Religious Education from the Diocese of Green Bay and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
Sister Mary James served the Church for 47 years as a dynamic, energetic and dedicated teacher. As a philosophy of education, she believed that "Education should be positive, learning should be exciting, challenging and fun. Every child should be successful and be at ease in the classroom." She involved every student in her class and spent countless hours tutoring students who were in need of help. No sacrifice was too great, no effort too much when Sister Mary James perceived a child in need of help. A smile, a nod, a word of encouragement and time for individual tutoring, sometimes a minute or two and frequently after school for a longer period.
She recognized special talents in the poor and made every effort to have their giftedness recognized by others - in musicals and plays. She encouraged all her students to use their talents to the best of their ability. Her students were motivated to be service oriented. They visited hospitals, homes for the elderly and retirement homes always taking with them some small gift/card which they had made for the patients/residents. They entertained with song and dance on these occasions bringing great joy to the sick and elderly. Sister was a teacher in Religious Education Classes on Saturday or Sunday mornings; during the week after school or in the evening and during the summer at rural parishes in Wisconsin and Ohio preparing children and young people for the Sacraments of First Eucharist, Reconciliation and Confirmation.
At the University of Dayton Sister Mary James was selected from a class of 53 students, and was encouraged to pursue a career of teaching on television as a "Master Teacher". Her practicum Project for the Masters Degree was entitled, "The Use of Community Resources", which opened up a year of educational activities for 40 sixth grade students. The students were exposed to such subjects as history, economics, law, sociology, psychology, law enforcement, fine arts, music and agriculture. The program included views of life, culture and habits of people in Russia, Mexico, Greenland and Peru as seen through the eyes of people who had lived there.
Sister Mary James was involved as an organizer/teacher in summer school workshops in reading, spelling and math for remedial and advanced students; art seminar; and summer Religious Education Programs. She taught in a College Reading Clinic; prepared students and directed them in Diocesan Music Festivals; maintained membership in a College Chorus for eight years; directed programs of entertainment at schools; trained altar servers and held regular meetings of high school and grade school servers in the club, KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR; participated in the production of Christmas plays, musicals, spring concerts, St. Patrick's Day programs, teaching songs, speaking parts, dance numbers, frequently directing the programs.
The preparation for the class Liturgies was the highlight of the week for Sister Mary James and her students at all grade levels. Her 15 years in junior high gave her the opportunity to develop leaders in the Church in the students who were eager to participate in the preparation of the class Liturgies. Each student was given an opportunity to sign up to do the reading, responsorial psalm, intercessions, presentation of gifts, prepare the art form when needed and participate in dramatization of the Gospel. Every student was involved in the preparation of the Liturgy, and they knew in advance when they were going to be involved. The Scriptures came alive in the classroom, as students dramatized the story of Jesus choosing the twelve, the story of Zacchaeus, the two debtors etc. Students loved the Liturgy and Scripture and sometimes asked if they could have a New Testament to keep as their very own. At the celebrations of the Class Liturgies, Sister often accompanied the music on her guitar, with students in the class.
After many delightful years of teaching, Sister enjoyed being involved: tutoring students on all grade levels, writing letters of encouragement to missionaries, praying for them, making mission rosaries, delivering Meals on Wheels, working with patients and shopping for them, helping children prepare for each new school year - shopping for school supplies, clothing and shoes, helping with costumes, attending their programs and being available to help them in any way. A former student of Sister Mary James, now a physician at Froedtert Hospital, told a colleague of his, "All I ever needed to know about life I learned from my third grade teacher!" What a marvelous influence Sister had on, not only one student, but all of her students who were privileged to have her as a master teacher.
Sister had many interests and hobbies: reading, drama, music, singing, dancing, walking, piano, guitar, roller skating, swimming, crocheting, macrame, cooking, baking, sewing and alterations.
Sister Mary James is survived by one brother: John; two sisters: Sister Timothy and Sister Rosemarie, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, friends, and students.
Sister was predeceased by her parents; brothers: Reverend James J. Geenen, Henry R. Jr., Joseph E., William T. and Patrick?J. Geenen: three sisters: Catherine Mary, Mary Marcella Geenen Fox, and Sister Rosalyn.

    Obituary:
John Augustine Geenen, age 84, of Francis Creek, Wisconsin, entered eternal life on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at his residence. John was the ninth child of Henry R. and Gladys Catherine (McCormick) Geenen. He was born on July 25, 1929 in Freedom, Wisconsin. John attended Saint Nicholas Elementary School. Early on, his teachers, the Notre Dame Sisters, recognized that John was a very gifted child. He was always at the top of his class and even skipped a grade. He was full of fun and always ready for a joke or prank. John had a beautiful voice, which was recognized in school where he was leader in the boys' choir. He loved music, singing and dancing. He was a Mass server and was always on time and considered it a privilege to serve Mass. He knew the Latin responses and answered the invocation of the priest in a clear and vibrant voice. After high school, John pursued education in several areas of interest. His first choice was to meet the needs of the common people. He saw the need for efficient, capable manager of the meat departments in the A&P Grocery Stores across the state of Wisconsin. He studied and mastered the newest trends in meat processing; learned about the many phases of producing, preserving and merchandising and also studied the skills development in this area. John knew the details of every phase of meat production and preservation with freezing being the most utilized method. He enjoyed preparing hickory smoked ham and making corned beef. He enjoyed selling meat and was meticulous, knowledgeable, skilled and artistic in setting up and arranging the meat display counter. As a salesman, John was pleasant, courteous and successful. He was well-informed in matters relating to the details of preparing farm and game animals, poultry, wild fowl and fish for market. John loved people. He enjoyed 20 years as an employee of the A&P Grocery chain stores. Later, John took up study of arboriculture. He studied the details of planting and caring for trees and shrubs and the steps necessary for landscaping, always aware of the appearance of the whole. When trimming trees or bushes, he was aware of symmetry and balance. He could reduce the bulky part of a shrub in a few minutes and make it pleasing to the eye. When planting a tree, he would make the tree symmetrical; check the hole for depth leaving a six inch space around the roots of the tree, putting the best soil at the bottom and filling the rest with mulch. Having a love for all nature, John enjoyed identifying trees. He was interested in the quality of lumber and the commercial value of trees. He was a licensed, fully insured landscaper and tree specialist. His professional training in tree removal, cabling, tree trimming, gutter cleaning and stump grinding was the preparation for his secondary career. John was employed by the Manitowoc Public School System for 18 years. He enjoyed faculty, staff and students. He was involved in school functions: faculty meetings, tournaments, track meets, musicals-Christmas and Spring concerts, proms, Christmas parties and graduations and he was loved by all who knew him. After retiring, John followed his heart and took up another interest of his which he had previously enjoyed-that of working with trees and plants. He started his own business, Jack's Tree and Stump Removal, which was very successful. The satisfaction of the customer was a great importance to John. It was his joy when removing a stump or tree, to clean up the area so that one would hardly notice that anything had been done. It had to be perfect. John was magnanimous in his dealings with the poor and elderly. When he did work for them, he always cut the price. During the snow season, John plowed out parking lots, places of business, residential areas and also the snow on sidewalks and driveways. Many times John helped the elderly by blowing out their sidewalks and driveways without cost to them. He loved to travel and observe other cultures and customs: Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, as well as traveling in the states. He made several trips to Branson, Missouri, because he had a great love for country music and the late artist, Johnny Cash. Joining the Senior Citizens, he was involved in their socials, lunches, dances and bus trips. Many times John was on the list for entertaining, singing, telling jokes and just making people feel great. He enjoyed working with senior citizens and the home-bound, bringing their groceries and whatever else they needed. He remembered their birthdays, anniversaries and frequently sent sympathy cards to the families. Helping the Saint Vincent de Paul Society in different ways was his forte. He delivered materials, clothing, furniture, dishes, pots and pans for other senior citizens who were unable to drive but wanted to donate to Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Frequently he was asked if he could provide logs for fireplaces in restaurants, hotels and other places of business and he always responded with a positive answer. John always participated in the 4th of July Parade in Manitowoc County. It was his joy to share candy and goodies with children and families along the parade route. He attended and loved the Firemen's Picnic and many other community functions. When waysides were the "place to enjoy a cookout", John invited friends to come and join him. He was always the Chef. He had such a marvelous sense of humor that made the day "A Day to Remember". John shared his talents, his humor, his music, his faith, and his boundless energy with his friends, co-workers and his family. Survivors include his two sisters: Sister Timothy and Sister Rosemarie of Beloit, WI; along with other relatives, friends, co-workers and business associates. He was preceded in death by his parents: Henry R. and Gladys Catherine (McCormick) Geenen; five brothers: Reverend James J. Geenen, Henry R. Geenen Jr., William T. Geenen, Joseph E. Geenen, Patrick J. Geenen; three sisters: Mary (Geenen) Fox, Sister Rosalyn, and Sister Mary James.

He is known to have been a POW at a Pathet Lao prison camp in Laos. He and other prisoners attempted to escape twice from the camp. He was recaptured on his 1st escape attempt and he is listed as MIA as a result of his second escape attempt in 1966.

Served in Bureau of Land Management as a Smoke Jumper for 3 years in Alaska and Montana.
Eugene DeBruin was portrayed by Jeremy Davies in Werner Herzog's 2007 film Rescue Dawn.

    News Mention:
In September of 1963, Eugene DeBruin of Kaukauna was shot down and taken prisoner in Laos. At the end of the Vietnam War no negotiations were made for the prisoners held in Laos. Over the past 50 years our government has never made a formal request for him of any of the other estimated 600 people that were left behind in that country. Please say a prayer for these poor people that were left behind.

    News Mention:
Eugene DeBruin of Kaukauna, whose plane was shot down by communist in Laos several weeks ago, has been reported by Air America to be alive but a prisoner.
DeBruin, 30, was a crew member of the Air America plane which was shot down by the Pathet Lao on September 5 in northern Laos. He was one of three Americans abroad the plane. The Pathet Lao mentioned Eugene's name last Saturday as the only survivor. Senator Nelson (Dem) Wisconsin later contacted the DeBruin's and told them the state department was negotiating for the release of Eugene. No information was available as to whether he was injured.

    News Mention:
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph DeBruin received word that their son, Eugene DeBruin, 30, presently a prisoner of the pro-communist Pathet Lao troops, will be released soon. DeBruin's plane was shot down over Laos on Sept 5 while dropping supplies. He was one of five that survived the crash. The announcement was made by Prince Souphanouvong, Pathet Lao leader, according to AP press dispatches. Information received stated he was being treated well by his captures. Air America, the concern which DeBruin was affiliated, has suspended its operations in Laos.
Update January 2010 - Information released through the U.S. freedom of information act confirms that Air America was operated by the C.I.A. during the Vietnam War. The U.S. would not negotiate with Laos for the release of POW's. Eugene and over 300 other prisoners were never released.
