    Joseph P. Schmalz, Darboy, age 80 died on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at home with his family by his side following a brief illness. He was born March 20, 1933 in Appleton son of the late Reuben and Irene (Luniak) Schmalz. On November 7, 1967 Joe married the former Betty Schindler at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Appleton. The couple lived in the Darboy area their entire married lives. Joe worked at PH Glatfelter, formerly Bergstrom Paper, retiring in 1995. Joe and Betty enjoyed 39 years of marriage together prior to her death on December 5, 2006. Joe's first love was farming, which he did from birth until his death. He was actively involved in the Calumet County Fair, supporting his children and grandchildren in the 4H Program. He was very proud of their trips to Milwaukee participating in the State Fair. Joe was a Packer Season ticket holder, a St. Louis Cardinal fan and enjoyed NASCAR. He and Betty enjoyed trips to the casinos. Joe loved to hunt and fish, especially spending time with the kids' ice fishing. He was a terrific grandpa and dad and loved his family with all his heart. Joe was a lifelong member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.
    He is survived by his children: Joseph (Alicia) Schmalz, Debbie (Bob Buhler) Schmalz-Buhler, Mary (Tom) Schwister and Dave Schmalz; 7 grandchildren: Kyle and Sam Schmalz, Sierra, Savannah, and Benjamin Buhler, Haley and Aaron Schwister; 1 brother and 2 sisters-in-law: Jim (Marge) Schmalz and Pat Schmalz; a brother-in-law, Jerry Weber; numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 2006, 2 brothers and a sister-in-law: John and Jerry (Sally) Schmalz; and a sister, Janet Weber. He is further preceded in death by his wife's family: Carl, Jack, Tom and Rose Schindler; 2 nephews: Jeff and Tim Schmalz.
    Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH at Holy Angels Church, Darboy. Friends may call at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. where a parish prayer service will conclude the evening. Friends may call again on Thursday directly at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of mass. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name for future donation to Calumet County 4H/Fair. www.boettcherfamilyfuneral.com
