    Biography:
    ANDREW H. STARK, who is carrying on agricultural operations on a fine tract of 110 acres, situated in Grand Chute township, is a native of Saxony, Germany, where he was born July 1, 1850, a son of Balthaser and Margaret (Faulk) Stark, natives of Saxony. They came to the United States about 1852, locating in Milwaukee, where Mr. Stark worked at whatever occupation he could find until he had accumulated enough to invest in a ten-acre farm located near Milwaukee. He continued to operate there until 1862, and in that year sold out and came to Outagamie county, buying a farm in Grand Chute township, on which there were no improvements. He cleared his farm and put it in a fine state of cultivation and continued to live upon it until 1885, when he sold it to his son, Andrew H., and removed to Shawano county, purchasing a property there. After some years he gave this farm to another son, with whom he lived during the balance of his life, his death occurring in 1896. His wife had passed away in 1858, having been the mother of five children, namely: Faldina, who is operating the homestead in Shawano county; Andrew H.; Henry, a resident of Michigan; Christopher, who is deceased; and Lizzie, the wife of Luther Glass of Shawano county. Andrew H. Stark attended the schools of Brookfield township, Waukesha county, and Grand Chute township, Outagamie county, and was reared to the life of an agriculturist. He was married when he was not quite twenty years of age, and after this event purchased the farm from his father. He has the 110 acres in the best of condition, the land being highly cultivated and capable of raising large crops, and in addition to general farming he has carried on some dairying and stock raising. Mr. Stark is interested as a stockholder in the Indiana Oil Company. From the time when he was fifteen years old and followed the river, being engaged in logging and other occupations, Mr. Stark has been a hard working, progressive man, and the success which he has achieved has come to him only after years of persistent and well directed effort. In his political belief Mr. Stark is a democrat, and he has served as township treasurer for fourteen years and as chairman by appointment to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Chairman Keenan. His religious belief is that of the Lutheran Church. On January 13, 1870, Mr. Stark was married,to Matilda Tesch, who was born in Prussia, Germany, March 9, 1849, daughter of Christopher and Mena (Disher) Tesch, who came to America in 1862 and located near Milwaukee on a farm. Some years later they removed to the city of Appleton, and there the father died in 1885 and the mother in 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Stark had a family of fourteen children: John, born October 25, 1870, who married (first) Margaret Daily, and (second) Ella Hintz, living in Appleton, where he is foreman of the car barns; Louisa, born December 29, 1872, is the wife of Emil Strack, a Sheboygan county farmer; Frank, born January 13, 1875, married Gussie Sennerow, a resident of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; Mary, born January 2, 1877, is the wife of Julius Witt, a farmer of Spencer Road, Grand Chute township; Emma; born December 3, 1878, married Charles Rogers, a resident of Maine township; Minnie, born August 22, 1880, is the wife of William Naumann, a resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin; William, born May 22, 1882, is a farmer of Black Creek township; Robert, born June 18, 1884, died April 24, 1892; Rosa, born December 9, 1885, is the wife of Henry Sager, a resident of Appleton; Albert, born April 29, 1887, is single and resides at home; Elma, born March 3, 1889; Arthur, born July 8, 1891; George, born, May 29, 1893; and Matilda, born March 7, 1895.

    ARTHUR H. STARK SR. 618 N. Superior St. Age 75, passed away suddenly at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday. He was born July 8, 1891 in the Town of Grand Chute. He had been a resident of Grand Chute prior to moving to Appleton at which time he retired. He was a member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran CHurch. Mr. Stark is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Mrs. Abraham Bessett; one son, Arthur W., Jr.; both of Appleton; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Sager, Appleton, Mrs. Minnie Naumann, Portland, Ore.; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchldren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. H.W. Berholz officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Wednesday until 9:30 a.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. at the church until the hour of the service."

    Ruth Fern Thiel, age 105, died on Monday, January 12, 2015, in Appleton. She was a lifelong resident of Appleton and Outagamie County. Ruth was born on February 14, 1909, on the family farm, in the Town of Maine, the daughter of the late Charles and Emma F. (Stark) Rogers. She was the middle child of seven children. In 1922, the family moved back to the old Rogers homestead, west of Appleton, on the banks of the Fox River where she resided until marriage. She attended the Appleton Public School in the old Third Ward.
    Ruth married Leeland W. Thiel of Appleton, at the First Congregational Church on December 29, 1928. She was a member of the church from April 12, 1925, and continued as a devoted member throughout her life. Ruth was active in the church and especially enjoyed her many friends in Circle Eight. She was also active in the local Ladies Auxiliary VFW. Ruth was an eleventh direct descendant of Mayflower passengers, Thomas and Joseph Rogers. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and traveling. Ruth enjoyed expressing herself creatively and did this through crocheting and knitting. She loved her family dearly and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her endless enjoyment.
    Ruth is survived by her sons: Peter (Helen) Thiel and Roger Thiel, both of Appleton; daughter: June (Vern) Stenli of Loveland, Colorado; grandchildren: Mark Thiel of Ramsey, Minnesota; Lisa (Thomas) Campbell of Draper, Utah; Jennifer (Warren) Brant of Crystal, Minnesota; Douglas (Maureen) Thiel of Somers, Connecticut; Gina (Craig) Lusty of Farmington, Minnesota; and Donald Stenli of Wichita, Kansas. She is further survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Leeland Thiel on December 9, 1982, following 54 years of marriage. Ruth was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Mildred Miller, Ethel Miller, Frances Reitzner, and Dorothy Krull; brothers: Arnold Rogers and Harley Rogers; sisters-in-law: Luella Rogers, Lucille Rogers, Florina Brusewitz, and Irene Thiel; and brothers-in-law: Edward Miller, George Miller, Carl Reitzner, Clarence Krull, Lavern Brusewitz, and Raymond Thiel.
    A funeral service for Ruth will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2015, at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 E. South River Street, Appleton, with Rev. Jane Anderson officiating. A time of visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Ruth F. Thiel Memorial Fund at the First Congregational Church. Online condolences may be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.

    Dorothy D. Krull, nee Rogers, age 97, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Neenah, Wisconsin, following a short illness. Dorothy was born on December 27, 1914, in the Town of Maine, Outagamie County, the daughter of Charles T. and Emma F. (Stark) Rogers. Dorothy married Clarence A. Krull of Neenah on October 9, 1940 at the Congregational Church in Menasha, Wisconsin. They were active church members, and in more recent years she participated in the Prairie Lakes Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ripon. Dorothy enjoyed a long and active life, often taking motor trips and playing golf with her husband of 51 years. Dorothy also enjoyed antiquing, flea markets, and collecting dolls. She and her daughter Bonnie sang in the First Congregational Church choir in Menasha for several years. A tenth generation American, Dorothy always displayed the flintiness and determination of her early American ancestors. In recent years, as a member of the church at Ripon she continued her support of charity; and of social activism. As a member of the Winnebago County Democratic Party, she remained as active as possible. Before marrying, she worked at Marathon Corp. in Menasha for eight years. In the sixties, she was the office manager at Vorpahl Interiors. Throughout her life she made many friends and always had a positive outlook. The last four years, she and her daughter took day trips around the area and ate at local restaurants. Dorothy called the final chapter of her life, Just Wonderful. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Bonnie A. (Krull) Wagner, Neenah, older sister, Ruth J.     Was an extraordinary woman and on July 24, 2016, after 87 years of living a blessed life, said goodbye to this world. She was born March 29, 1929.
    On August 18, 1951 she married James Van Stralen. They started their life together in Appleton, WI where they lived and raised six children. They moved to Spokane Valley, WA in the early 90s where she became very active at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church. She was a mainstay in the choir as well as numerous church functions. She also volunteered at the Valley Hospital in Spokane Valley, just recently obtaining a 5,000 hour volunteer certificate of which she was very proud. Her passions were crafting, luncheons with her lady friends, her church activities and volunteering. She was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and quilter. Between everyone in her family, they own many potholders, sweaters, scarves, hats and baby afghans. Affectionately, she never missed a date or occasion for sending cards and letters.
    She leaves behind her husband Jim, sons Jim and Judy Van Stralen, Stuart and Sandi Van Stralen, and daughters Kay Woodworth, Ann Johnson and Lois Meyer and her brother Dellas and Beverly Vandenberg. She has 12 grandchildren: Kari, Christopher, Eric, Paul, Joe, Tessa, Heather, Holly, Jessica, Dylan, Jake and Evelyn and five great-grandchildren: Lily, Liam, CJ, Olivia and Brandon. She was preceded in death by her son, Russell Van Stralen, her parents Joseph and Laura Vandenberg and a brother, Jimmie Vandenberg.
    Special friends she wanted to appreciate are Ruby and Dan Casey, Kay and Carlie Schwebs, her cousin Dolores Holmes, Arleen Sprague, her special friend from church, Mary Beth and Glenn Jenson from Stiles, WI, and her cousin Lynn Bishop from Minnesota.
