    Obituary:
Surrounded by the love of his family and friends in his home, Larry's courageous 20 year battle with cancer ended peacefully on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, just shy of his 80th birthday.
Loving husband to Kathleen (Kathy) for 58 years. Beloved, caring and inspirational father to Terri (Jeff), Torre and Tammi (Rob). Cherished Grandpa to Tyler (Clare), Sarah, Jennifer (Mike), John (Lora) and Theresa (Nathan). Great-grandpa to Finley, Rowan and Reese. Brother to Lucille. Brother-in-law to Betty, Ruth, Donna and Nancy. Further survived by other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie Klarner; brothers, Roy, Bob, Cyril, Jerry and twins Joseph and George, brother-in-law, Leo, and father-in law and mother-in-law, Bernard and Lillian Vanden Heuvel.
Larry was a long time member of St. Margaret Mary Church. Larry served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After leaving the military, he married his high school sweetheart, Kathy. He went to college and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960 at UW-Milwaukee, where he was a member of the Track and Cross Country teams. In 1964, he received his Master's degree in Math Education from Purdue University. Larry's teaching career began at North Division High School in the Math Department. His coaching career began there as the Assistant Coach of the 1964 Boys' Basketball team, a highlight being runner up to the State Championship team. Larry went on to Brookfield East High School where he taught Math and was Head Cross Country Coach for 20+ years until he retired in 1989. Popcorn and Coca Cola became a Monday night tradition at the Klarner house, as well as help with school work when needed. Coaching Kurt on to winning a State Championship was truly a highlight in his Cross Country coaching career. Coaching Randy, who became a coach himself at Brookfield East, and currently has runners qualified for the State meet on June 1, ranked right up there in keeping his spirits up while battling illness.
Larry's family was his pride and joy. He loved to be at their side supporting them in all their endeavors. He enjoyed taking trips with them to Daytona Beach, Hawaii and Las Vegas. He loved cooking and baking. His specialty was turkey and dressing, apple, cherry and pumpkin pies to the delight of his family and friends. He was an ardent UW-Madison Badger and UW-Milwaukee Panther men's basketball fan. His support of the Green Bay Packers began long before Lambeau Field, when the team didn't have their own stadium and played in a high school stadium on Green Bay's Eastside. Hobbies included daily runs and some marathons in his younger days, later turning to daily walks, reading books, gardening and Sudoku.
A quiet man of deep conviction with a smile that lit up the room. Larry had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. Larry was blessed with so many wonderful friends and colleagues throughout his life that have been by his side throughout it all, like Dick, Norm, LaVern, Tim and Randy. The kindness of many who visited his home and all of those who prayed continuously for him throughout the years, will always be cherished and never forgotten.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Larry touched are invited to the CHURCH AND CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME, 1875 N CALHOUN RD, BROOKFIELD, WI, for a memorial gathering from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013, to reminisce and support each other. A Celebration of Larry's Life will begin at 1 p.m.
Larry's family would like to thank Dr. Kurt Oesterling and the staff at Aurora Cancer Care, as wells as Aurora Hospice Care for the extraordinary treatment given in a kind, loving and compassionate manner; especially RN, Lori, who became Larry and his family's angel in his time of passing.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, UW-Milwaukee or Purdue University Schools of Math Education, St. Margaret Mary Grade School in Milwaukee WI, or the charity of your choice .
