    Biography:
Charles Michel de Langlade, fur-trader, officer in the colonial regular troops, and Indian department employee; baptized 9 May 1729 at Michilimackinac (Mackinaw City, Mich.), son of Augustin Mouet de Langlade, a prominent trader, and Domitilde, sister of Nissowaquet; m. 12 Aug. 1754 at Michilimackinac Charlotte-Ambroisine, daughter of René Bourassa, dit La Ronde, and they had two daughters; he also had a son Charles by an earlier liaison with an Ottawa woman; d. during the winter of 1800– 1 at La Baye (Green Bay, WI).
Throughout his long active career Charles-Michel Mouet de Langlade was known for his influence with the Indians. His authority derived from his relationship to Nissowaquet, an important chief, from his personal qualities, and from an incident during his childhood. As a ten-year-old boy he had accompanied Nissowaquet on a successful attack against the Chickasaws. The Ottawas, who had twice previously been defeated, decided that a special protecting spirit must dwell with him.
By 1750 Langlade was a cadet in the colonial regulars. His first recorded military exploit occurred in 1752 at Pickawillany (Piqua, Ohio). The British and the French were in bitter competition for control of the Ohio valley and its native population. When Pierre-Joseph Céloron* de Blainville was unable to persuade the Miamis under Memeskia (La Demoiselle) to move from Pickawillany, which was within the British sphere of influence, Langlade was sent there with a force of perhaps 300 Indians and French. Attacking on 21 June when most of the Miamis were away hunting, Langlade forced the remaining few and the British traders present to surrender. Memeskia was boiled and eaten. Governor Duquesne wrote of Langlade: "He is acknowledged here to be very brave, to have much influence on the minds of the Indians, and to be very zealous when ordered to do anything."
Promoted ensign on 15 March 1755, Langlade was active in the Seven Years' War. He claimed to have planned the ambush that led to Jean-Daniel Dumas's defeat of Edward Braddock near Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh, Pa) in 1755. In August 1756 he and his Indian followers returned to Fort Duquesne as scouts. They remained in the east during the winter and on 21 Jan. 1757 were part of a force which successfully ambushed Robert Rogers and his rangers near Fort Carillon (Ticonderoga, N.Y.). Langlade was by this time an ensign on half pay. While serving under Montcalm* during the siege of Fort William Henry (also known as Fort George, now Lake George, N.Y.) that summer, he was instrumental in capturing a British flotilla. In September 1757 Governor Vaudreuil [Rigaud] made him second in command at Michilimackinac. Langlade was present at the siege of Quebec two years later. If the reinforcements he had requested of Lévis had arrived in time, he and his Indians might have destroyed the detachment Wolfe* took to reconnoitre up the Montmorency River on 26 July. Instead, both sides withdrew after a brief skirmish. In 1760 Langlade came from Michilimackinac to Montreal, where he learned he had been promoted lieutenant on half pay. Ordered to leave the city just before its surrender, he returned to Michilimackinac where he held command until the British arrived in September 1761.
Langlade's time had not, however, been exclusively taken up by military service. In October 1755 he had been ordered by the commandant at Michilimackinac to establish a trading post at the mouth of the Grand River (Grand Haven, Mich.) and to use it to help maintain control of the Ottawas and Potawatomis along the western shore of Lake Michigan. Langlade continued to do his winter trading at this site through 1790, having as many as 15 men working for him.
Like many residents of Michilimackinac, Langlade appears to have adjusted to British rule with little difficulty. When in 1763 he heard rumours of an Ojibwa uprising he warned the commandant, George Etherington. Etherington did not listen, however, and the Ojibwas under Madjeckewiss* seized the fort. Langlade, at great risk to his life, rescued Etherington and William Leslye from the stake where they were to be sacrificed. He has been criticized for refusing refuge in his home to Alexander Henry* the elder. Langlade was unwilling to hazard the safety of his family but he did see to it that Henry was saved, and with his help and that of his Ottawa relatives the survivors of the attack were eventually taken to Montreal. Langlade took command of the fort until the British presence was reasserted the next year. He then moved his permanent home to La Baye, where his father was already living.
Early in the American revolution Governor Guy Carleton* referred to Langlade, by then a captain in the Indian department, as "a man I have had every reason to be very much satisfied with and who from his influence among the Indians of that district may be very much use." After bringing Indians to help defend Montreal in 1776 Langlade, with Luc de La Corne, joined Burgoyne in the summer of 1777. Although many of Burgoyne's Indians left, Langlade and his Ottawa followers stayed until the attack on Bennington (Vt). When Langlade returned to the west from Montreal in the fall of 1778 he was called upon to gather an Indian force to assist Henry Hamilton against rebel sympathizers at Vincennes (Ind.). Unsuccessful in the fall because the Indians had gone to their winter hunting grounds, Langlade collected a force in the spring. The Indians refused to move, however, when they heard that Hamilton had been captured by George Rogers Clark. Clark sent an agent, Daniel-Maurice Godefroy de Linctot, to destroy Langlade's influence with the Indians but Langlade and his nephew, Charles Gautier de Verville, used generous gifts to maintain their support. In 1780 Langlade took an Indian force into the Illinois country to assist in the attack on Spanish St Louis (Mo.) but was chased back to Lake Michigan by Linctot's horsemen [see Wahpasha*].
After the war Langlade continued to serve in the Indian department. He received goods that Gautier had embezzled from the British storehouse on Mackinac Island, but although Gautier was discovered and dismissed from his post as storekeeper and interpreter in 1793 Langlade retained his position. He remained active until his death and enjoyed telling about 99 battles in which he had participated. A companion, recalling Langlade's actions, said he "never saw so perfectly cool and fearless a man on the field of battle."
His exact date of death is unknown, except for the latter part of 1801 and after the end of July.

    Biography:
GRIGNON, Augustin was born in Green Bay June 27, 1780. About the year 1800 he came as agent of the American Fur Trade Company to Kaukauna (then called Kockaloo) and bought the log house built by Dominic Ducharm in 1790. Ducharm was the first white man who settled in what is now Outagamie County. Augustin Grignon bought of the Indians 1520 acres of land fronting on the river 71 chains and 50 links wide. The United States Government afterwards gave him a patent for the same land. Augustin built an addition to the log house bought of Ducharm and resided in it and traded with the Indians until his death. His son, Charles A. Grignon was born in said housse (which was standing in 1894) on June 15, 1808 and after his father's death continued the business, buying furs of the Indians, until the United States bought all the land of the Indians and removed them to a reservation in Shawano County. He also built a nice frame house where he died, which is now the reisdence of his widow and children. Charles A. Grignon married Mary E. Mead, a sister of Mrs. George W. Lawe and also of M.J. Mead of Kaukauna. They have 3 sons named Augustin, Ross and Charles and 5 daughters named, Fanny, Maggy, Lydia, Mary and Emelia. Augustin Grignon was descended from the famous DeLanglade family. His mother was Domitelle DeLanglade, a daughter of the famous Charles DeLanglade, whose mother was a sister of the head Ottoway Chief, King Nessowa-quet, of Mackinaw. Charles DeLanglade became a famous leader of all the western Indians and it was he who planned and executed the famous battle known in history as the defeat of Gen. Braddock in 1755. He was also with Gen. Montcalm in the battle before Quebec in 1759, which resulted in the surrender of all the Canadas to the British. He was also engaged in most of the battles in the French and Indian War from 1755 to 1760. The children of Augustin Grignon were Margaret, who married Ebenezer Childs; Charles A. born in Kaukauna in 1808, Alexander and Paul and Sophia, who married Louis B. Porlier and Louis Grignon. Taken from The Outagamie Pioneer Record.

Augustin married McCrea, Nancy Abt 1805. Nancy was born Abt 1779; died Abt 1842; was buried , Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Kaukauna, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

Papers of a resident of Kaukauna, Wis., federal Indian interpreter, and local Democratic political figure. A few letters and accounts reflect Grignon's interest in the waning fur-trade business which he acquired from his father Augustin Grignon, but most of the correspondence relates to his work as an Indian interpreter from 1844 to 1855. Included are records of annuity payments and of conferences with the Indians, and references to his trips to Washington on behalf of the Menominees in 1845 and 1850. Among Grignon's correspondents on politics, business, and Indian affairs were Florimond J. Bonduel, Ben C. Eastman, Albert G. Ellis, George W. Ewing, Morgan L. Martin, and Lyman C. Draper. The collection also contains papers of David P. Meade and John F. Meade, father-in-law and brother-in-law of Grignon. These include postal records kept by David P. Meade while postmaster of Kaukauna in 1853-1854; and informative letters on business and politics written in the 1840s by John F. Meade, first from Green Bay as U.S. Land Receiver, then from Madison while a clerk in the Territorial House of Representatives and a state legislator. Numerous business papers relate to land sales, some by Charles A. Grignon, some by Jacob Deuel, surveyor and town promoter in Calumet County. Also included are letters regarding the use of stone from the Grignon quarry for locks on the Fox River, and other improvements.

[Source: Proceedings of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin Vol. 10 (1909) Transcribed by: Heather A. Turner]
1882: Alexander Grignon, a native of Green Bay, was thrown from a wagon and killed, near his residence in the town of Howe, Shawano County, July 4th, at about the age of seventy years. He was an early school teacher at Green Bay, and nearly fifty years ago was engaged, with his brother, Charles A. Grignon, in keeping an Indian trading store at Kaukauna. He afterwards lived for many years at Keshena. He was courteous and genial, and possessed of a fund of anecdote and adventure connected with Indian and frontier life.

His remains were moved here in 1961.
"One of the earliest native sons and Outagamie County pioneer came home to rest today when the century old bones of Augustin Grignon and seven members of his family were re-buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.
"The remains of two others outside the Grignon family also were burried in the common grave and casket. They are believed to be an Indian woman known as born-in-the-Morning and Laurent Fily, secretary and tutor for the Grignon family for many years. Besides Augustin, identification tags indicate the other bones are those of his wife, Nancy McCrea Grignon, the wife of one of his sons, Lawrence, Paul Grignon and wife, his daughter Sophia Grignon Porlier and two of her grandchildren.
"All 10 were originally interred in a family burial ground on the first homestead and fur trading post of Augustin, just west of the present village of Butte des Morts in Winnebago County. The bones were recovered more than 20 years ago and have been kept by Geroge Greenwood, funeral director, for the last 19 years awaiting final burial in Kaukauna where Augustin settled in the early 1800s."

The residence which is now being built by A. D. Grignon on the old homestead in Kaukauna, will be the third which has been constructed by the Grignon family, all of which structures will be yet standing and each built by a different generation. The first of these is a log house and was erected over 80 years ago by Augustine Grignon. Here was born C. A. Grignon, Sr., who in turn erected the present Grignon residence, and where all his children were born. Augustine, the grandson, now builds the third which will outshine in architecture the dwellings of his ancestors, but it can not, in all probabilities be any more substantially constructed.

    Obituary:
The Death of a Pioneer James D. Porlier, who died at DePere last week. ranked as one of the pioneers of the Fox River Valley. His father, Jacques J. Porlier, was early connected with the public affairs of this part of then, Michigan Territory; and was appointed Justice of the peace, county commissioner, and chief justice of Brown county, by Lewis Cass as Governor of Michigan Territory in the year 1820, and was also captain of a volunteer company that rendered service against Black Hawk and his warriors in that short but memorable war. His mother--who became Mrs. Agatha DesMarteau by a second marriage--it will be remembered died several years ago; and was eminent for her zeal as an assistant to the Rev. Van den Brock in that worthy man's attempt to christianize the barbaric red man.
James D. Porlier was born at Green Bay, Wis., March 22d, 1826, and excepting his term of service as a private in Co. F. 44th Reg. Inf. of Wis. Vols. has always resided in this state. His wife, a niece of James M. Boyd, survives him, having left to console her, a large family of sons and daughters.
By the banks of the Fox river, the spot which now is the site of South Kaukauna, he sported in his childhood with his brother Louis G. and his sister, Mary L., the former now a resident of Hammond, Ind., and the later Mrs. William Lamuro of Buchanan, and they saw that hollowed childhood spot become a city, changing from its primitive wilderness, the condition in which they first beheld it and residing there, while their parents labored to render this county tolerant for the abode of civilized man. Let us, in all reverence for those long departed, and in commemoration of his services as a brave soldier, and as on that done well his humble part in the world's work--join in the prayer that he sleeps in the Lord."

    Obituary:
Dorothy F. Lawniczak was welcomed into heaven on Monday, the 17th of November, 2014. The daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Daul) LaCount was born October 29, 1916, in Green Bay. On February 24, 1936, at the age of 20, she fell in love and married Peter Lawniczak. They shared 67 wonderful loving years together until Peter was taken from this world on July 8, 2002. The couple farmed for many years in the town of Pittsfield until lightning burnt the barn, at which time they moved to the village of Pulaski. During her many years with Peter, she gave birth to four adoring children, with whom she spent many hours and who will miss her dearly. They include Robert and his wife Joan, Pulaski, Kenneth, Milwaukee, Donna and her husband, Michael Bertrand, Pulaski, and Gerald, who preceded her to eternal life. She had many talents, including cooking, baking bread and desserts, and, with Peter, preparing many holiday meals over the years for the family. The cookie jar was always full and ready for her family, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren who spent countless hours in her care. She enjoyed latch work, reading, traveling with family, and Bahr tour trips with her husband, Peter. She was also a member of the Council of Catholic Women at Assumption B.V.M. Parish.
In addition to her children, she is survived by nine grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; a sister, Hazel LaCount, Green Bay; two brothers: Roger LaCount, Suamico and Raymond (Shirley) LaCount, Florida; a sister-in-law: Delores LaCount, Howard.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Gerald; a grandson, Ken Lawniczak, Jr.; four brothers: Wilfred (Edith), Russell (Marvel), Earl (Geneva) and Roland; one sister and brother-in-law: Gladys (John) Lawniczak; and a sister-in-law: Selma LaCount.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 24th at Assumption B.V.M. Church in Pulaski, Fr. Patrick Gawrylewski, O.F.M. presiding. Entombment took place in Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum, Green Bay.
